Re:Y Combinator, a Two-Year-Old, and a Pregnant Wife on Thursday October 23, 2014 @08:45PM (#8501569)
I not able to come up with politer wording yet I'm downvoted. Total discrimination.
Re:Y Combinator, a Two-Year-Old, and a Pregnant Wife on Thursday October 23, 2014 @05:27PM (#8500858)
Terrible analogy.. Your wife complains about you being away so you tell her to shut up becuase military families have it worse? Yeah... when my kids are hungry, I'll tell them to quit complaining because some kid in Africa is worse off....
Re:Y Combinator, a Two-Year-Old, and a Pregnant Wife on Thursday October 23, 2014 @05:09PM (#8500771)
Jesus christ man - all of this sacrifice for a time sheet application? Is it really worth it?
Re:Email IP Leak Test on Saturday September 27, 2014 @04:54AM (#8376503)
Can't believe all the down votes for this!
Re:Email IP Leak Test on Wednesday September 24, 2014 @06:47AM (#8360744)
Don't make me think... I should be able to copy and paste without any browser tricks or viewing the source.
Re:Email IP Leak Test on Wednesday September 24, 2014 @06:43AM (#8360736)
So I have to click a mailto link rather than letting me copy and paste the email address? I don't have a mail client set up on this machine. Good one....
Re:The State of Oregon vs. Oracle [pdf] on Monday August 25, 2014 @11:46PM (#8225638)
I read the Oracle complaint in full (unlike you). Some of the staff at Oregon were modifying software config on production servers which totally circumvented Oracle release procedures... Oregon would not lock down solid requirements... Stakeholders and requirements would change frequently and existing work would be rendered obsolete.

I've worked with those kind of badly managed clients before. They likely ignored Oracle's advice, came up with nonsense strategies and requirements then kept being vague about the details.

Go and keep turning you bakers over off or requesting crazy ingredients that should never go into mixture (against the bakers advice) and see what kind of bread you get.

Re:What Gentrification Really Is, and How We Can Avoid It on Monday August 25, 2014 @10:50PM (#8225472)
Change "rich white tech workers" to "Mulsim" or "Indian". People move, things change, if you've got a problem with white techy folk driving house prices up then I'm sure you also have a problem with various amounts of South Asian immigration driving house prices down.

Anti-immigration / anti-change is stupid. Nobody would be where they are today if change never happened. Get off my lawn.

Re:The State of Oregon vs. Oracle [pdf] on Sunday August 24, 2014 @10:44PM (#8220363)
I used to work for Accenture as a technical consultant.

Having read both complaints, I'm on Oracles side more than the Oregons.

On so many big IT projects I would see the client constantly change requirements, be very vague, change stakeholders who then completely move the goal posts and effectively hold the project back for large periods of time.

It's not surprise that large projects fail when you see the state of most large clients.

This highlights a much larger problem. Our processes for delivering large IT projects need a radical change in order to stop toxic stakeholders tanking whole projects.

However, Some of Oracle's products are shit and do fuck all out of the box despite what the sales people say.

Re:Rob Pike's Rules of Programming on Sunday July 06, 2014 @09:47PM (#7996585)
For some reason, this was worth a downvote even though it has some validilaty.
Re:Rob Pike's Rules of Programming on Sunday July 06, 2014 @07:30PM (#7996277)
If you find yourself regularly having to force that kind of behaviour out of a language that doesn't support it, you're using the wrong language or you have a bad design.
Re:Rob Pike's Rules of Programming on Sunday July 06, 2014 @07:21PM (#7996251)
Yes, that is exactly what Apple did with the iPhone. They wrote the interface then tested it over and over again and made optimisations on every iteration.. This was before it was released to the general public.

The article is talking about optimising before you can prove where the problems are... Apple had excellent testing which showed where a lot of issues were. Some issues may well have not been discovered until a wider audience had access though.

Testing can happen before you release a product you know? You new fangled startup MVP types only think good testing happens on paying customers. Fuck you guys.

Interestingly, Grainger are using an off the shelf ecommerce platform called hybris. I imagine they made (or got someone to make) many modifications to its extended functionality though.
I don't see how this is in any way related to my comment?
Re:New Soylent Website on Tuesday May 06, 2014 @02:46PM (#7706359)
Not everyone is you.

I enjoy a wonderful and varied diet since I moved near the coast in Australia... some days I would just rather not have to eat though (various reasons). For these days, why not use Soylent?

I'm not arguing about Balmer, I'm saying that Bill's decision is probably nothing to do with Balmer or the state of the company. Why don't you re-read my original comment?

Here; I've highlighted the key parts for you:

" he's selling because he doesn't want the stock anymore therefore Balmer being replaced as CEO is unlikely to be an influencing factor."

Your comment is based on absolutely nothing aside from a little Balmer bashing. It's unlikely that he's selling because he thinks MSFT will under-perform, he's selling because he doesn't want the stock anymore therefore Balmer being replaced as CEO is unlikely to be an influencing factor.

Re:The Absurdity of LinkedIn on Wednesday April 30, 2014 @05:14PM (#7676496)
Java Enterprise, Spring, JMS, Messaging and a couple of large Java based ecommerce platforms although I spend more time actually leading projects than I do writing code now.

Most good Java guys that I know take around £500 - 700 per day in the enterprise, telco, banking and ecommerce space.

Re:The Absurdity of LinkedIn on Wednesday April 30, 2014 @11:33AM (#7673968)
Maybe you need to read what I've written. I know that I'm not part of his world but I at least understand there is a world outside of what I do. He just thinks that everyone here is the same as him and what he does must be the only thing in software development.
Re:The Absurdity of LinkedIn on Wednesday April 30, 2014 @11:25AM (#7673915)
I can't believe people don't use Linkedin. I've been a software engineer and more recently a delivery lead within the professional service consulting space working with massive enterprise clients for a few years now.

Everybody I've ever spoken to (outside of small JS type devs) has got a linkedin profile and expected me to have one. So many recruiters (I contract now) have used linkedin to contact me based on searches they've done which I have converted into 6 separate projects now (and at £650 per day that's a lot of money).

Depending what circles you move in (I move in big enterprise software and services circles) it's just a given that you will have a linkedin. I have a domain name which directs to my blog and one page profile but even then people still ask for my linkedin.

I don't know what the smaller time software dev world is like but for me linkedin is essential..

Saying you can't believe why anybody in the HN crowd would use linkedin probably shows that you only know about the bubble that you operate in.

Re:Ask HN: I can't do this anymore, I need help on Monday March 31, 2014 @04:45AM (#7500360)
Here is some short and sharp advice for you:

Quit this startup crap

Get a job at a large consulting firm e.g. Accenture (you will get to work with smart and highly motivated people)

Spend time working on big enterprise projects getting paid well.

You will soon see all the complex problems that enterprises have to deal with on a daily basis. This will fuel your next startup idea.

Fix a pain point for one of your big consultancy clients and base your startup around that, you'll have a network of smart people and a market that's in need of your solution.

I've spent a few years working for a large consultancy, I've worked with mega ambitious and smart people on massive projects that I would have never seen otherwise. I've learnt so much about tech and business that I'm now ready to break out on my own and I have a massive network and a huge amount of savings to do it.

Also, don't think your life has to revolve around startups. Great careers are just as exciting.

Re:Bill Gates funds creation of graphene condoms on Saturday November 23, 2013 @03:57PM (#6787398)
Most people don't wake up in the morning with the urge to fight someone, a lot of people do wake up with the urge to have sex. Sex, like voilence, will always happen. We need to find a way to work with what we've got rather than trying to suppress are human needs.
Re:Bill Gates funds creation of graphene condoms on Friday November 22, 2013 @08:13AM (#6780505)
Sex is part of human nature. It used to happen before Humans invented the notion of marriage. The church is trying to stop something that is intrinsically a part of us, that is a bad strategy and is actively making the world a WORSE place.

A better idea would be to encourage people to use condoms. This does not circumvent human nature and has a much better chance of working.

Don't defend ill thought out policy with bad logic.

"Sign in with Twitter". Looks like I can't use this service... nice..
I hate these kind of arguments.

What OS are you running? If you trust your OS vendor enough to run their binaries as root then you shouldn't be too worried when they screenshot your machine every minute and post the images online so your family can see the kind of porn you watch...
