News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

What are the use-cases, and when would such a policy have led to a drastically different outcome (in the case of a crime being committed, industrial espionage, or what-have-you)?

If I have a laptop encrypted with luks or whatever, then what? What are the consequences of non-compliance?

Re:Lego Helicopter Kit Cancelled 10 Days Before Release on Wednesday July 22, 2020 @12:51PM (#23918934)
Anecdotally, my Aunt had banned all guns and violent toys from her house. One morning, after serving breakfast, she noticed that my cousin had bitten his toast into the shape of a gun and was making "pew-pew" motions. They laugh and laugh about that. It is what it is.
This old saw again?

Shit. Just don't use Ubuntu. The writing is on the wall.

Google it bro

OpenBSD dabs on this list from the towering arches of the heavens.
Re:Redis 6.0 GA on Thursday April 30, 2020 @11:12AM (#23031689)
I suppose I shouldn't be surprised at this level of pedantic cherry-picking, but yet... I still find myself bristling.
Re:Lyft lays off 17% of workforce, furloughs hundreds more on Thursday April 30, 2020 @11:10AM (#23031663)
No, like choose to follow Sweden's example.

Time will show.

Virus going to do what it's going to do. People can choose to stay home but this shelter in place stuff is wrecking the lives of the poor and the people who are most vulnerable.

Tcl/Tk dabs on your gui frameworks from the unreachable pinnacle of the heavens.
Re:Disabling Snaps in Ubuntu 20.04 on Friday April 24, 2020 @05:36PM (#22973167)
Canonical always has tried to differentiate themselves, and they just can't execute. Remember Unity, Mir, Juju, upstart and all the other failed shit they've come out with? Snap is just more of the same. I don't want to run that garbage on my desktop. I don't need more daemons and forced auto-updates and all the baggage.

I strongly recommend anyone similarly frustrated to check out debian, which is a fantastic distro. Thanks to Kevin for posting this, but if you're using Ubuntu and disabling snap, you're fighting against the current and I have to imagine it's going to be increasingly difficult with subsequent releases.

Re:GitHub was down again on Thursday April 23, 2020 @09:21AM (#22955615)
Looks like it's affecting git operations for me.

Yikes.

Yikes

UX careerists are clowns who chase trends and aesthetics over quality and function.

That's not a fact. That's your opinion.

Missing the point all over the place.
Re:YouTube accidentally permanently terminated my account on Sunday April 12, 2020 @09:42AM (#22848185)
It really sucks you can't run your own webserver and host your own videos.
Re:Google bans Zoom from employees' computers on Wednesday April 08, 2020 @05:35PM (#22817435)
I don't like zoom either, but what exactly made them the HN punching bag of the month? Ad/surveillance giants like Google or FB are typically spoken of with notes of reverence and awe on here. Zoom gets lit-up for sending data to FB, but FB gets a pass? I don't know I just can't get into the mood. extinguishes torch in moat.
I prefer 4:3 grainy shit from the 90s to a slick cg any day.
I've used python with gstreamer to create my own music player as well. It was a fantastically enjoyable project and I use it for hours every day. Strongly recommend it for anyone who wants a fun challenge (and who is finicky about how they listen to music).
How do you log into stuff on your phone, or when you don't have your password db and app installed?

Re:About Musl on Thursday March 26, 2020 @12:42PM (#22695361)
Did you bother to read? It's about the combinatorial explosion that happens when you need to support lots of configurations. It's apolitical.
Re:No Code Of Conduct (2018) on Thursday March 26, 2020 @08:13AM (#22692742)
I'd suggest that you try those suggestions (direct contact, then escalate privately) before rejecting them.
Re:NsCDE: Not So Common Desktop Environment on Tuesday March 17, 2020 @09:19AM (#22604594)
fvwm is like the pinnacle for obsessive configuration. I spent a couple hours over a weekend setting it up and thought it was really neat. The man pages and official website are very thorough, but I found this guide the most helpful getting started:

Goes on to completely dismiss it.

This is an amazing project and much more than a theme/skin, and obviously a labor of love. Glad to see it on HN getting some well-earned kudos.

Re:GitHub blocked me and all my libraries on Monday March 16, 2020 @01:05PM (#22594588)
Yes, and the trend towards codes of conduct and ethical licenses are producing projects ripe for this sort of hijacking.
The original idea was great, but people have gamed it so hard that it's falling apart because of lack of trust (in my opinion).
Re:The Right to Be Rude on Tuesday March 10, 2020 @07:25AM (#22534506)
Thanks I didn't see this.
