Re:Why Working at Google Is Not My Dream Job Anymore on Monday August 25, 2014 @02:31PM (#8223232)
I don't get it. The blog post is about failing multiple Google interviews, then complaining that the process is good enough for you, then saying Google isn't your "dream job" anymore?

How is this different than the old, "I didn't want to go to your stupid birthday party anyway!"??

Maybe I missed something in the post but I was hoping to read about someone who had actually worked at Google before criticizing it..

Re:Easter Egg Hidden in VMWare Fusion and Workstation on Thursday August 21, 2014 @01:41PM (#8208586)
I somewhat agree - but given that no meaningful piece of software has ever shipped without bugs being punted (and bugs that weren't even known about), when is there really time to add an easter egg?
Re:Fish vs. Fish in Street Fighter II on Thursday August 21, 2014 @01:05PM (#8208369)
Just gotta say this is a strange outcome of our technological developments.. I mean think of the energy that was spent making this work - it could've been done doing something.. I dunno fucking useful?!

It's almost as bad as watching two "grown-ups" play Street Fighter lol.

Golf, yacht sailing, cycling.
Re:Codr, an app to help teach kids to code on Friday June 06, 2014 @03:55PM (#7859998)
VB?! Modern languages that are simple (like JS, Python) make more sense to me.

VB is a bit old and outdated at this point, I think.

Re:Apple Confirms Its $3 Billion Deal for Beats Electronics on Wednesday May 28, 2014 @06:43PM (#7813434)
I would say equal rights should be at the top of the list, yes.

Even for a special "hacker community".

Re:The Critical Engineering Manifesto on Wednesday May 21, 2014 @05:46PM (#7780953)
So it's not just me... the whole thing seems quite hard to understand, and somewhat full of hot air?
Re: terminating a job, in many states employment can be legally terminated without reason (both by the employer and the employee).

See "at will employment".

No rollback plan? Wtf.
Re:Link Bubble - A new browser for Android on Sunday March 23, 2014 @01:36PM (#7454182)
It's more of an innovation than an invention, it seems. (nothing wrong with that, to be clear)
Re:Ask HN: How do you earn your money? on Saturday March 22, 2014 @09:04PM (#7451619)
The nice thing about just being an employee is you get a lot more free time to enjoy life. Yes, there is life outside of software for some of us!

Also, way less risk.

I work for big companies, and the chance of getting laid off is about 0%, while the chance of an annual raise and performance bonus is 100%.

Not saying it's the best way to go, but it works for me.

Think of something you want to write in that language; this is the only thing that really works for me.

Tutorials and canned examples are ok, but if it's not something I actually want then I'm not really learning much.

And if you can't do anything useful in the language you want to learn, then ask yourself why you want to learn it?

Or take something relatively simple, and code it in whatever language. I did this a while back, and wrote a port scanner in c, java, perl, and python.

Re:Open source bike comparison and review on Saturday March 22, 2014 @12:30AM (#7447576)
Not sure I'd go so far to call it bs.. ballpark figures are better than nothing!

At least the listed frame weights are somewhat less subjective than complete bike weights - and there are a bunch of people that definitely care about that kind of "minutiae".

Re:Open source bike comparison and review on Friday March 21, 2014 @09:16PM (#7446456)
Cool idea.

Would love to see frame weights added, along with complete bike weights.

Not seeing Raleigh, Focus, and a bunch of other brands listed. Will more be added?

The royal 1%?
Re:Coming Soon to Hacker News: Pending Comments on Friday March 21, 2014 @09:06PM (#7446380)
Yes, this seems like the whole point of the "feature".

I'm really missing what problem is being solved..

Re:Coming Soon to Hacker News: Pending Comments on Friday March 21, 2014 @09:04PM (#7446364)
> cut the amount of discussion on HN by a large amount. Maybe even by 90%.

Indeed, this seems to be the point.. which is kind of ridiculous.

What problem is this solving again? If it's bickering sub-threads, just add UI to collapse threads.

Re:Ask HN: Getting back into Python on Friday March 21, 2014 @12:59PM (#7443359)
Thanks - yeah I will certainly need to shift my thinking away from c#-style (read: Visual Studio) development.

As for pdb, I guess I've been spoiled by Visual Studio's debugging - hover to see values, step through source code, etc.

Is there no Python debugging/IDE equivalent to Visual Studio's hover/etc?

Re:Ask HN: Getting back into Python on Friday March 21, 2014 @12:52PM (#7443316)
Ah good question - desktop, basically.

edit: To be somewhat more specific I will be automating/testing a client application that uses a server backend.

Re:Ask HN: Getting back into Python on Friday March 21, 2014 @12:51PM (#7443313)
Thanks!

By "indentation" I meant using that for conditional blocks, instead of the C-style bracketing that I'm used to.

I found that list of IDEs, but basically what I'm asking is what are people's favorites from that list?

If what you're really after is designing a scalable website - which is very different from system admin stuff - I think the "Building Scalable Websites" book is a great place to start: http://shop.oreilly.com/product/9780596102357.do

Perhaps a bit dated (2006), but most of it would still be relevant.

Ask HN: Getting back into Python

About to start a job doing python; it's been over 10 years since I've written any. All I remember is lots of indentation.I've been doing C# for the last 10 years, so I'm quite out of touch with the latest in python development. What's the best IDE for writing python? (on Mac OS X)I see a lot of options out there, but would like to hear what people are actually using. Mostly I want an IDE that...

Basically women didn't exist back then, was the gist I got from it.

Yeah yeah "that's the way it was back then"..

Re:Dissecting an interview question on Tuesday March 18, 2014 @02:41PM (#7424011)
Indeed time to retired it - it's really not a creative question, nor will show how creative the candidate is.

While I'm all for testing the bounds of a candidate's CS knowledge, try to come up with an original problem that nobody has asked before!

You can get a lot of mileage out of doing stuff like reversing numbers (without using strings), etc.

You forgot entitled.

Also - racist jokes, really? Tell us a good one.

Re:Blind Pair Programming Interviews on Monday March 17, 2014 @05:18PM (#7418163)
Seems like an interesting approach, but there is a lot to be said about how one communicates, not just codes.

Unless you just want a pure code monkey that never needs to talk to anyone or coordinate with anyone.. then this is a great way to find that monkey.

Much conspiracy.
Re:Flappy Bird Creator Dong Nguyen Speaks Out on Tuesday March 11, 2014 @06:57PM (#7382783)
I'd seen the name of course, but had never seen him.

Weird.

I see what you did there!
Given that he did at first admit to being previously involved, you just might be on to something..
