Re:Ask HN: In what order did you learn your languages? on Monday October 16, 2017 @05:48PM (#15486894)
Pascal, Assembly, C, Java, Python, JavaScript. Somewhere in there was Perl, but that seems to have been largely replaced with bash and Python for those types of tasks. Also somewhere in there was the dead-end Dart language, which I liked. I've been using TypeScript, but it does take effort not to revert back to straight JavaScript.

Ask HN: Smallest Computer Case for Holiday Season?

I'm looking to build my father a small form factor (SFF) build for an ITX motherboard with a graphics card of 1050 Ti or greater. I am okay using HDPLEX, Pico PSU, or Flex ATX as the power supply to reduce size. Normally, I would just go to Newegg or PCPartpicker, but I've been seeing unusual cases not covered on those sites. For example, the Geeek A20 Mini-ITX is $40 and has a volume of under...

It's good to see the spread of microservices as it's a better way to develop scalable applications. Nice that there's so much innovation in this space.
Re:Java, Scala and the Reactive Platform from IBM on Monday October 16, 2017 @05:17PM (#15486711)
There's a nice interview of Jonas Boner, Lightbend CTO and creator of the Akka framework at the link below. If you're interested in reactive microservices, you should check it out.

@danberg, thanks for the information. If you have any updates, please post them here.

It looks like the README.md for Grafeas was updated a few times in the last few days.

https://github.com/Grafeas/Grafeas/commits/master/README.md

This section of the README.md is interesting:

TODO:Document the process for adding a new kind to the spec and generating the model, documents, and client libraries to include that kind. #38

Hopefully, these types of things will be fully explained when we see companies like IBM commercialize Grafeas and offer it as a service.

Re:Ask HN: Is anyone using Watson in their business? on Thursday October 12, 2017 @11:47AM (#15458822)
I'm not using it in my business yet, but I created an IoT project to test the Watson text to speech API for the Renesas IoT Sandbox. See this. http://learn.iotcommunity.io/t/using-speech-in-your-iot-proj...

It's actually easy to use the API and I'm hoping to use more features for the my next project, which is a mobile app to get voice alerts of distributed IoT data from the cloud. Not sure if this answers the question, but I think the API is usable by businesses.

Re:Good way to learn encapsulation with Python? on Thursday October 12, 2017 @11:37AM (#15458750)
Thanks man. I'm going to try and incorporate some of this for my 12 year old daughter. If there's a simpler explanation of this for kids, that would help. Otherwise, I'll power through and make something myself. BTW, if you have a daughter that you're teaching to program, I wrote some articles here: http://pychildren.blogspot.com/2015/01/tiled-map-creation-fo... I'm working on some new lessons. Peace.
I just saw this TechCrunch article on the topic by Frederic Lardinois https://techcrunch.com/2017/10/12/google-ibm-and-others-laun...
Can you get some additional information? Have you tried to ask IBM? Maybe the author of the blog? Seems like I need to download this from GitHub in order to take a look at it right now?
The Google blog lists a number of companies that are implementing Grafeas.

https://cloudplatform.googleblog.com/2017/10/introducing-gra...

The GitHub repository is here. https://github.com/Grafeas/Grafeas

The GitHub README.md has the most concise description of Grafeas, which is a metadata API specification. It further explaisn note and occurrence. I think that reading through the README.md of the Grafeas project first might help to understand the blogs by Google and IBM.

https://github.com/Grafeas/Grafeas/blob/master/README.md

When can I use this as part of the IBM Cloud? Any speculation? Can I use it on the Google Cloud? It seems like Black Duck integrating it with the Google Cloud https://blog.blackducksoftware.com/black-duck-google-grafeas

Or, do I need to install this myself?

Good way to learn encapsulation with Python?

I'm teaching a 12 year old girl Python and want a tutorial to show best practices for separation of concerns, encapsulation , use of functions and classes. Most articles I've seen deal with theoretical recommendations. I want a step-by-step tutorial that is almost all code snippets and not very much text other than the code snippets. I'm looking for things like, put libraries in /lib, when to...

Lots of really great cloud infrastructure being released as open source. Good to see these projects with docs and all the stuff that makes them easy to work with.
According to a recent survey of 28 carriers, 75% of them will deploy SDN in 2016. 100% of the carriers indicated that they will deploy SDN in the future. Read my article that highlights some of the current trends in SDN. https://app.console.to/article/5800004da934601092304492/
