News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

This establishes a baseline. More evidence can adjust it, and we have one data point here, but I'm going for it:

*Absent meaningful regulations, 95% of Flock searches are illegal.*

what? the big guys are the easiest to sue, they almost always settle. it’s the smaller/shady fraudsters who ignore the court summons, so you get a default judgment that you can never collect because they’re impossible to find.

Re:Google Search is now less than half of Alphabet’s revenue on Thursday October 29, 2026 @02:01PM (#50293299)
Fascinating; they must be bidding on the part numbers as search keywords.

Now I wonder what the median CPC is for part numbers (I’d guess very cheap), and which one is the most expensive (no idea, super curious).

yes it’s absolutely survivorship bias, fully ack that.

the funny part is contemplating that every single day we’re alive, no matter what we do, we are increasing our “survivorship bias”. Might as well play with the odds a tiny bit, roll the dice and have some fun, BUT safely on the margins of course :) Learning those margins is the biggest survivorship hurdle.

Maybe I’m weird. I like my scars. I didn’t ask for any of them. Or I unconsciously asked for all of them.

Sometimes the universe makes a mark on you; what you do with that is up to you.

I got a little bold with dear Earth recently and she smacked me pretty hard. I knew what I was doing, knew the risks, and did it anyway. It’s maturing into a decently large scar, and I’m pleased. It’s a nice memory, that kiss.

Maybe I’m weird. Regret minimization, which most people seem to follow as a life strategy, is too boring for me. I always thought I’d die young but after luckily surviving some really stupid decisions in my youth, I’ve gotten much better at measuring risk.

paste a link to this HN article and then your comment into your favorite LLM, it will be happy to guide you.
Spend more time offline! You spend too much time here. I’ve been on HN 3x longer and have a third the karma, and most of my comments get upvotes (except the rare ones like this when I happily burn a little to make a point, in spite of the HN groupthink). Your karma here is great, too great. Enjoy the world and find happiness elsewhere.

The linked article title says “flown” but that could be expressive; is there any definitive evidence of the actual transport mechanism?

agree with one minor quibble:

> load up planes and physically ship gold.

they would not load planes, they’d load ships, because it’s much cheaper.

This was very real, thank you.

About your sister, feel free to discard this thought as we don’t know each other at all: You did the right thing to save her; somehow separate that from the relationship animosity (not sure how); but it’s 2 things, don’t combine them.

Re:Donaldson Futuro House in Idyllwild, California, USA on Saturday October 17, 2026 @01:04AM (#50128119)
California is an ocean of poverty dotted with islands of wealth.

And the islands keep getting smaller and more expensive as the ocean expands.

If the lifestyle attracts you, go for it. It’s not for me.

Agree but “reemerge” implies it may have disappeared; of course it never truly died.

Taking a semi-opinionated swag, the core went from Rome to Constantinople, then Venice, then London.

I don’t think I’ve ever read a single issue of Current Affairs.

This was so well-written and convincing that I just subscribed. I believe they are doing this the right way, and more power to them!

Another neat spaceship house in Tennessee [1] [2]

The house in TFA costs more money and seems smaller. Maybe not a good value for the money?

I can't speak to firefighting, but in many ways emergency medicine is remarkably similar to debugging software: you're presented with a problem, it's manifesting some symptoms and you have to determine the root cause. Sometimes a clock is ticking.

If you actually enjoy the process of debugging, discovering root causes and fixing things, emergency medicine can be quite rewarding & fulfilling on very human level.

Fair warning: There are also some really bad experiences you will never un-see, if you're not ready for that I would stay away. Seeing death is objectively worse than the most catastrophic datacenter outage.

Re:AI is a tool and using it well takes skill on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @08:09AM (#50070406)
In theory, you take the same amount of time, and because step 4 is so fast you can spend more time on the steps before and after, and finish with a better result.
Maybe they release the white-hat version first?

In the future when the “AI viruses” are endemic and impossible to eradicate from our infrastructure, will we need “good guy AI” viruses chasing down the bad guys?

wonderful; the culture is dead but one of its remnants at some point had a position of leadership over its conquerors; this is success

The annihilated culture was not worried about its haplogroups, it was worried about is survival; its dead now; its haplogroups survive so everything is fine, yes?

Re:WallHop – 12ft.io is gone, so I built a replacement on Saturday October 10, 2026 @09:14PM (#50038827)
Operating a malware portal is not a good way to advertise, or run a media business, and we’ve no obligation to support that.

If your physical copy of the Sunday Paper got up and walked around your house, rifled through your personal effects, then made a bunch of secret phone calls to shady numbers, would you say “Well, they gotta run a media business, it’s wrong of me not to let them make money this way, after all I agreed when I subscribed”

It’s basic caveat emptor stuff.

it was nice while it lasted. I guess my next step is a jev+cron to sort good from bad. Browser automation here we come. Someone want to write a Firefox extension that runs in your open browser tab? I would pay for this.
a thorny question to be sure

Sharing a trick I learned here on HN: I prefix my first name on LinkedIn with an emoji (green check box).

Whenever a message starts with “Hi (emoji) (first name)” it’s 100% spam.

So far they are not training to fix this (all they have to do is drop the prefix), which is somewhat surprising. Zero messages that address me correctly seem automated. Maybe because in today’s day people can legitimately have emoji in their names?
