Re:Anthropic invests $100M into the Claude Partner Network on Saturday March 14, 2026 @07:55PM (#47382653)
It's part of enterprise sales which is how Anthropic will potentially be a long-term business.
YT Premium is my favorite monthly subscription - probably the highest value software that I pay for.
Re:Apple removes environmental metrics from executive pay on Friday February 27, 2026 @03:10PM (#47184920)
I think there is near 100% chance that humans will destroy the planet, or more accurately we'll destroy humankind - the planet will long outlive humans and will probably "heal" itself to some degree after we're gone. The idea that we'll solve climate change seems like such an improbable long shot.
I've tried the various flavors of self-driving in my Tesla over the past several years, and essentially it came down to a three-strikes rule for me - after the third time that car jerkily exited the self-driving mode on it own (the third time being in a slight bend on the highway at night) and spiked my heart rate to must have been an all-time high as I manually corrected in time to avoid disaster.. I said "nope, this is a decent electric car but I'm driving it myself from now on."

Waymo on the other hand, I trust it with my life on a weekly basis and have never had cause for concern (fingers crossed I didn't just jinx it).

Re:Aaron Levie: Why Startups Win in the AI Era [video] on Friday September 19, 2025 @02:43PM (#45305001)
Aaron Levie strikes me as one of the sharpest and most prescient people in SV. I think you must be 100% correct that he's a true nerd about this stuff, or else he could have gone on to a thousand different things outside of Box by now.. he would probably be an incredible VC (I think I recall he was one of the first seed investors in Stripe as a result of cornering Patrick Collison at a house party, talking his ear off, and thoroughly impressing Collison).
Re:David Lynch LA House on Friday September 19, 2025 @02:32PM (#45304878)
The property tax is calculated based on the last transaction price of the home, so despite it being estimated at $15m today, the owner would be paying tax on a much lower value (assuming they purchased it many years ago).
aside from a $1.75 trillion market cap
Re:Ollama's new engine for multimodal models on Friday May 16, 2025 @01:17PM (#44007817)
The whole '*llama' naming convention in the LLM world is more confusing to me than it probably should be. So many llamas running around out here.
Re:The Joy and Freedom of Working Until Death on Wednesday May 14, 2025 @04:06PM (#43988647)
The means of suicide are probably too much for the average person to succumb to even in the face of a very hard life. The fact that assisted suicide is broadly illegal in the US is something that I've always found ridiculous. No one asked to be brought into the world, and we should be able to check out on our own terms (in planned, thoughtful, assisted way) without resorting to painful/tragic means.
This is exactly how I feel. I do not want to be in the Databricks ecosystem.
I've been seriously considering neon for a new application. This definitely gives me pause... maybe plain ol' Postgres is going to be the winner for me again.
Re:Exercise before bed is linked with disrupted sleep on Friday April 25, 2025 @03:08PM (#43797461)
I often do a spin class on the Peloton to end my day. Around 8pm I'll do a 30-60min ride, then shower, then straight to bed... works well for me.
Re:A Postmortem of a Startup on Wednesday April 16, 2025 @04:22PM (#43709948)
The solution lies in eliminating the entire concept of investment properties, and to classify single-homes as purely places to live. You do realize that part of "not enough" houses is due to corporate entities / investment vehicles / investors owning many properties.

And the types of cities (dense, highly-desirable urban cities like SF, London, Paris) where the NIMBY people complain most often also happen to be the most common markets for these investors to purchase/own multiple homes.

Re:A Postmortem of a Startup on Wednesday April 16, 2025 @03:59PM (#43709688)
If a government truly wanted to fix a housing "crisis", wouldn't a ban on any type of corporate entity from buying single-family homes be an efficient solution? E.g., LLC's can no longer purchase single-family homes. Only real, live human individuals can purchase single-family homes. They could also try to implement some type of ban on any single individual person from purchasing more than 1 (or choose a number) single-family home.
Re:Interview with Jeff Atwood, Co-Founder of Stack Overflow on Wednesday January 22, 2025 @03:52PM (#42797365)
I bought my house (in CA) in 2019, and my property tax bill is ~$30k/yr. My literal nextdoor neighbor's property tax bill is less than $1k/yr (it last sold in the 1960s and has been passed down within the same family).
they will appear to be omniscient and will generally know nothing

Sounds like a rather accurate description of a LLM.

Re:Japan's declining births on track to fall below 700k on Wednesday November 06, 2024 @03:24PM (#42068770)
I just recently spent some time in Japan (Kyoto), and I frequently travel to Tokyo. It always interests me to see these Japanese birthrate articles because anecdotally you might never know it while walking around the cities - you'll see so many young parents with babies strapped to their chests / in strollers / on bicycles.

Ask HN: Are you running RAG in production?

It's been over a year, give or take, since most enterprises started experimenting with Generative AI use cases, specifically the RAG architecture. What results are you seeing so far? In my view, it's still too early to draw conclusions for the very large, slow-moving enterprises, but I imagine there must be some success (or lack of success) stories by now.

Re:Fraud, so much fraud on Friday September 27, 2024 @02:57PM (#41674317)
I'm not a researcher or academic, but when I think of roughly how long it takes me to do meaningful deep work and produce a project of any significance, I'm struck by the fact that his 800 papers isn't a red flag? Even if you allocate ~3 months per paper, that's over 200 years of work. Is it common for academics to produce research papers in a matter of days?

From the article: Masliah appeared an ideal selection. The physician and neuropathologist conducted research at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) for decades, and his drive, curiosity, and productivity propelled him into the top ranks of scholars on Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. His roughly 800 research papers, many on how those conditions damage synapses, the junctions between neurons, have made him one of the most cited scientists in his field.

Re:Las Vegas staff say MrBeast should be 'blacklisted', cite OSHA on Thursday September 26, 2024 @05:50PM (#41663849)
The fact that the MrBeast YT channel has over 300 million subscribers, and has such a profound grip on youth attention, is something that I occasionally wonder about (in terms of what it says about culture, youth, etc). From my perspective as a 35+ yr old male in the US, everything about it screams idiocracy.
You don't have to look too hard to find examples of fully-remote (from day 1) startups succeeding (e.g., Redpanda eating Confluent's lunch). If your company is struggling to succeed then your product(s) simply isn't good enough, and thinking that having more butts in seats inside of a big office building is going to change that is wishful thinking by the people who don't actually build the products.
Re:Group Chats Rule the World on Thursday June 13, 2024 @02:38PM (#40673042)
I used to be involved in several, highly active group chats. Over time these effectively became a concentrated form of social media, i.e. mostly a distraction and waste of time.
On average, within SF (say, a 3-4 mile trip), is typically ~$20. Peak times on Friday or Saturday evenings can definitely exceed $35, but I've yet to have any ride go above $50.
Yes, they're actually awesome. 'Waymo' has replaced 'Uber' in my vocabulary, e.g. "Let's just Waymo there".
Re:Attacking Ethereum and Stealing $25M on Wednesday May 15, 2024 @03:28PM (#40371279)
The standout bit to me is that they officially refer to the Ethereum blockchain as a "financial system", and clearly one that the US government is defending to some degree. Aside from that, I'm kind of impressed with these two brothers and a little disappointed that they got caught.
Re:There's no need to shower every day – here's why on Tuesday April 30, 2024 @01:47PM (#40213792)
"I do think a lot of the showering is performative," he says. "Why are we washing? Mostly because we're afraid somebody else will tell us that we're smelling... I faced that fear, and I live."

This is not why I shower every day. I show every day because I exercise (and sweat) every day, and because showering and being clean feels good.

Re:The Tech Gold Rush Is Over. Where's the Next One? on Friday November 03, 2023 @05:37PM (#38135315)
Yep, this is definitely the end of technological progress. A Bloomberg Opinion columnist says so.
It's certainly not coming to me. I'm financially supporting my parents in their older age.
Re:AI's $200B Question on Sunday October 08, 2023 @09:29PM (#37815995)
This struck me as if it was written by an investment banker, so I looked up the author, and confirmed he was indeed an investment banker prior to joining Sequoia.
Ironically I'm back to using amazon.com solely for it's original use case - buying books.
