$1099 is so nuts
Re:Namecheap just seized and disabled all my domains on Sunday October 18, 2026 @03:30PM (#50144466)
Same! Both are great
Re:Fancy Curl Sites on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @04:01PM (#50094223)
Fun! I also did something similar with my personal website this summer:

- `curl listening.cailinpitt.com` shows what music I've been listening to recently

- `curl reading.cailinpitt.com` shows what books and articles I've been reading recently

Re:Apple HomeView on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @10:30AM (#50072348)
I think this is pretty classic Apple – they take their time jumping into a new product segment and only do it once they feel their product would work and be received well. The iPhone Duo being released this year after ~10 years of foldable Android phones is a similar story
Re:Show HN: Ledge.sh – Runnable Markdown Notes on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @01:54PM (#49912189)
This is really cool, and I love the mobile support too! I’ll definitely be giving this a spin
Re:QR Codes That Route to the Appropriate App Store on Thursday September 24, 2026 @01:08PM (#49833671)
I agree with the other commenters that this is a pretty simple engineering problem, but I still enjoyed reading about edge cases the author worked to address (they could have taken the easy road with this but tried not to). I forgot that Safari on iPad doesn't specify iPad in user agent headers
> Moving our workloads off GitHub Actions to third-party runners with faster CPUs, higher-performance storage, and better cache infrastructure gave us faster machines to run the same pipeline on

Yeah, was not surprised to read this. Actions is convenient if you already use GitHub, but it can also be pretty slow. Given reliability is also a major issue with GitHub these days I expect to see more orgs moving to different pipelines

Re:Custom home server built from spare parts on Sunday September 20, 2026 @04:09PM (#49779560)
That tiny touchscreen that shows metrics was an extremely nice touch. Fascinating read!
Re:Minimal Phone 2 on Friday September 18, 2026 @07:31PM (#49761666)
One thing that is bugging me (and maybe it's buried on the website somewhere but I missed it) is that I can't figure out what version of Android the phone uses. I wouldn't buy a phone relying on an older version of it
Re:macOS 27 Golden Gate: The Ars Technica Review on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @05:35PM (#49733361)
So happy they’ve finally added Ethernet status to the menu bar. It has always bugged me there wasn’t an easy way to quickly check if my Mac was using Ethernet or not
This is really neat! I loved flying from MDW to ORD
Re:How Poor People Buy Cars on Friday September 11, 2026 @10:11PM (#49667983)
Too late – we're going to see "Show HN" posts of vibe coded apps related to this in 48 hours

I think this applies to all personal blog posts

Re:Matt Mullenweg put on 'leave of absence' on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @09:31PM (#49637158)
Hope you’re doing better these days!
Re:iPhone Duo on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @03:12PM (#49632453)
One of the reasons I plan on purchasing the iPhone Duo is actually because it has a smaller outer screen size than any of the other iPhones. Agreed that it is wider, but I think it can still be used one handed for most people
This is really cool! This is inspiring me to build something similar for Chicago
Re:A look under our trunk: what's in our compute on Friday August 21, 2026 @06:56PM (#49394735)
FWIW they started actively testing in Chicago a few months ago. I frequently see them around town now
Re:AI;DR (AI; Didn't Read) on Monday August 17, 2026 @04:17PM (#49336990)
This blog post also feels AI written (I can tell it’s human written, just sloppy)
Re:I Remain a Skeptic on Saturday August 15, 2026 @05:31PM (#49314529)
To the author’s point about there not being enough evidence to support pro-AI claims — Additionally, there are studies and articles coming out showing those people are wrong and AI only makes people barely more efficient. Not the 10x tech CEOs are claiming while slashing thousands of jobs

Re:Mea Culpa – Dark Hours on Sunday August 09, 2026 @11:34AM (#49232387)
Wow, this is a genuinely crazy situation. I also have doubts that Claude can be prompted to wholesale copy an open source project like this, so I'm really curious to see receipts from Terry (session history, commits)
Re:When Feature Flags Do and Don't Make Sense on Saturday August 08, 2026 @10:31PM (#49227875)
I agree with the entire premise but I do think the cost argument is a bit overblown. Adding "unnecessary" feature flags isn't really that big of a deal imo, feature flags are cheap to add and maintain. Also sometimes flipping feature flags can be faster than doing a rollback, especially if multiple systems are involved.

I think the true cost is that feature flags can cause code bloat and readability issues, since engineers typically aren't great about cleaning up feature flags after things have been rolled out. I think that's an easily solvable problem that doesn't really necessitate a scarcity mindset of "just use less feature flags / only when necessary" though. LaunchDarkly makes it pretty easy to track feature flag usage and remind people to clean up old ones.

Re:GitHub Actions Is Down on Thursday August 06, 2026 @01:27PM (#49199695)
I believe Pages uses Actions under the hood for publishing, so in my head it sort of makes sense for these things to be affected in the same outage
Re:GitHub Actions Is Down on Thursday August 06, 2026 @01:17PM (#49199547)
This has been preventing me from merging a PR for over an hour. I'm really tired of the constant outages GitHub has
Re:Nothing works and everyone is euphoric on Friday July 24, 2026 @11:36AM (#49037218)
The pinch to zoom issue is actually a WebKit bug (https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=305622), although technically the root cause is Reddit using a ton of memory
Re:I Regret Migrating to Codeberg on Thursday July 23, 2026 @11:40AM (#49023384)
I thought it was funny at first and kept clicking away to see what other random changes I'd get, but then I got a "Zuckerberg nudes" Google search webpage and I'm on my work computer...

Fortunately this functionality doesn't change your browser history, but it did really annoy me for a bit
