Interesting. Can’t think of any faults in your logic!

Are you actively working on this?

What kinds of things do you think has to change with game engines?

Sharding would have to happen to handle geographic distance between people, wouldn't it?

I’m curious to hear your thoughts.

Re:The Spaceballs Argument for Unconditional Basic Income on Wednesday January 11, 2023 @03:30PM (#34344221)
What would motivate people? I think healthcare, as in your example, would actually see an influx of people motivated to help others. Not everyone is lazy and would do nothing. Plenty of people work in healthcare today for less money than they would get paid in other industries primarily because they value helping others.

Like, this kind of thing? https://voxon.co/

I had to Google it, but since I've recently been diving into volumetric video, the words made me curious.

How's it going? Any particular area you're working on?

Time to organise the HN Oxford Meetup! :)
Re:How Claude Shannon helped kick-start machine learning on Wednesday January 26, 2022 @08:45AM (#30085256)
He was clearly a smart person.

I do wonder though, if the reason we won’t see his likes again is because he was truly a one-off, or that his particular environment enabled him to show his excellence.

I’ve been reading “The Idea Factory”, about Bell Labs, recently.

If I could upvote this again, I would.

Are there any good guides anywhere you'd recommend for hardware startups - and how to reduce this $30K upfront cost? That is a lot of money.
Re:How to Find Focus on Friday December 18, 2020 @09:56AM (#25467652)
That rings true for me, but with a slight adjustment; once you have fill your brain with knowledge you can then condense it to the simplest model, from which the rest can be derived if needed again.
You could rent clothes for a day...

Wake up. Clothes have been delivered overnight. Put them on, wear for the day. At the end of the day, put them in a box outside wherever you're staying the night.

That seems like a feasible thing to build today, if you ignored all the current consequences of fast-fashion.

Re:BBC Online Moves to AWS, Serverless on Thursday November 05, 2020 @06:54AM (#24997433)
If you're worried about the BBC running on AWS, how do you feel about government departments with more sensitive data, like the Home Office, and HMRC, using it?

Re:Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project? on Thursday May 14, 2020 @09:20AM (#23179137)
Yeah, I agree - it looks good, but it is Facebook :) The auto-following is a pretty neat feature though! I might try and pick one up to play around with when they're back in stock.

The real sticking point for me, apart from the lack of stock, is that I never call anyone using WhatsApp or Messenger. I'd ideally like compatibility with other platforms. I figured I'd start with Jitsi as its open-source, and go from there

I did briefly look at how I could get FaceTime working on something, but I think it involved jailbreaking an iPhone and getting access to the SSL certs.

Re:Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project? on Thursday May 14, 2020 @08:53AM (#23178845)
I've been struggling to find time, but when I do I've been trying to get a good family-room video chat setup going.

Ideally, Apple would just release a FaceTime-compatible camera I can plug into my TV... but until then, I'm working towards a small HDMI connected device that I can control with my phone (running Jitsi).

I enjoyed reading that - thanks for sharing.
Re:Jitsi Meet: An open source alternative to Zoom on Tuesday March 24, 2020 @09:27AM (#22674629)
This is the first I've heard of it, so thanks for the tip. I'll be reading all of https://matrix.org tonight!
Re:Jitsi Meet: An open source alternative to Zoom on Tuesday March 24, 2020 @07:08AM (#22673821)
Whilst its great that people are iterating on existing products out there, I feel slightly sad that we just have a load of "alternatives" that don't play nicely with each other.

It would be much nicer if I could use FaceTime, whilst speaking to someone on Hangouts, plus someone else on Jitsi. Apart from discovery, what is stopping that? I'm assuming they all use basically the same underlying codecs, of course!

Re:Ask HN: Is it worth it to move to London as a SWE? on Wednesday January 08, 2020 @09:55AM (#21991934)
London is about to experience two things: Brexit, and the private sector reform of IR35 legislation (for contract work). Both will affect the job market there.

Arguably the latter will be felt worse in the coming months, as Brexit has already been accounted for by many companies.

Re:Products I Wish Existed on Tuesday January 07, 2020 @04:46AM (#21978449)
It would be interesting to know which bits would be out-of-scope if we tried to build the Young Lady's Illustrated Primer right now.

The nanobots binding to a single-child, definitely... and the audio dictation from real actors, probably. There's not too much of a stretch between the rest and reality. Is there?

I'll let you know if I ever get around to it!

I was presuming the legal office address was going to be their accountant's address too. However, if you get a name from Companies House, you might be able to find a website, and then a contact page... It might turn into a hard NLP problem though :)

I like stuff like this :)

Did you consider automating it at all though? I've been considering using Companies House data, and a web-scraper, to find tech companies in my local area.

Re:Ask HN : What side project are you working on? on Wednesday August 19, 2015 @11:28AM (#10086128)
Meal Planning Recommendations - suggests what you should eat this week.

The second stage will be to pre-order the food from a Supermarket API, so all the food will already be in your house.

If I can figure out how to make an app that actually cooks my food, I'm done :)

Re:Ask HN: How many vacations do you take a year? on Monday January 27, 2014 @06:23AM (#7129785)
Last year, I had about 7-8 long weekends, or short breaks (maybe 3 days max). I felt a bit depressed when I realised that I never had a whole week off though (apart from over xmas). That was in a London, UK startup.

This year, I'm going to make sure I have at least a couple of full weeks off.

Forgive my ignorance, but what would this potentially replace? Kafka/Storm/Something else?
That looks very cool. It would be interesting to see at what speeds it can survive collisions, and still remain upright.
