Show HN: Climbing Grade Converter

https://kylev.dev/climbing-grade-converter/

Outside of programming, my main hobby is rock climbing. Because the grading systems used to communicate difficulty vary depending on climbing discipline and country, I often find myself needing to convert grades when reading climbing content online. Several tools for this already exist, but I wasn't entirely happy with any of them so I decided to build my own.I focused on making my converter as...

You aren't special for using em dashes, and it doesn't make someone an NPC to notice that AIs frequently make use of them.
No, it's not. AI uses em dashes far more frequently than the average human.

They were specifically looking at worst-case performance. P99 means 99th percentile, so they saw 96% improvement on the longest 1% of jobs.
He meant that it's been around for a while and is relatively stable. Not that it's literally boring.

Re:Media trust hits new low on Monday September 06, 2021 @12:45AM (#28430357)
So their solution to the declining trust in government and media is to leverage the trust that employees still have in their CEOs. If they can convince CEOs to push their false narratives, then trust will evaporate there as well. How about instead: be more trustworthy.

Re:More than eighty cultures still speak in whistles on Tuesday August 24, 2021 @01:35PM (#28292243)
If you read the article you would know.

"Despite their interest to both linguists and casual observers, whistled languages are disappearing rapidly all over the world, and some — such as the whistled form of the Tepehua language in Mexico — have already vanished. Modernization is largely to blame, says Meyer, who points to roads as the biggest factor. “That’s why you still find whistled speech only in places that are very, very remote, that have had less contact with modernity, less access to roads,” he says."

Re:More than eighty cultures still speak in whistles on Tuesday August 24, 2021 @01:31PM (#28292173)
The article actually says the exact opposite. Can you read? Here's the quote:

"That doesn’t mean that modern whistled speech is a vestigial remnant of those protolanguages, Meyer cautions. If whistling preceded voiced speech, those earliest whistles wouldn’t have needed to encode sounds produced by the vocal cords. But today’s whistled languages do, which means they arose later, as add-ons to conventional languages, not forerunners of them, Meyer says."

Re:Show HN: Collaborative Online Sticky Notes on Thursday August 05, 2021 @11:21AM (#28074981)
As a heavy user of the built-in mac and windows sticky notes applications, I wanted something similar that would persist between all of my devices. Another feature I wanted was the ability to share notes with other people and edit them together. That's why I built Cloud Stickiez, a web application that lets you create sticky notes online, organize them in boards, and share your boards with other people. I started this project a few years ago but I didn't get a chance to add the collaboration features until recently. I built this using Angular and Firebase because they were technologies that I wanted to try out at the time.
