News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Maven / Java seem to have solved it well.
Re:Ask HN: Is Apple down? on Monday March 21, 2022 @05:07PM (#30759725)
My app update was rejected because my Upgrade screen was unable to fetch prices from their servers and instead showed an infinite spinner.
Re:Ask HN: Is ProductHunt Worth It? on Sunday January 09, 2022 @11:48AM (#29864921)
It's probably more worth it than Hacker News. I submitted my new site Cancel Culture Live (cancelculturelive.com) yesterday evening and it was just removed. Months working on a new shiny webapp, it starts getting a few upvotes and traction on HN, only to be removed?
Re: on Saturday January 08, 2022 @11:44PM (#29860213)
The red X is a vote to cancel and the green check is a vote not to cancel.
Damn you got downvoted real quick.
Re:GitHub Copilot on Tuesday June 29, 2021 @12:22PM (#27678091)
Some of your questions aren't easy to answer. Maybe the first two were OK to ask. Others would probably require lawyers and maybe even courts to decide. This is a pretty cool new product just being shared on an online discussion forum. If you are serious about using it for a company, talk to your lawyers, get in touch with Github's people, and maybe hash out these very specific details on the side. Your comment came off as super negative to me.
I like the idea but am irritated that there's upfront Pricing involved. If my software is sending you customers for loans I should be sharing a commission with you and that's that. Why do you need money from me to let me send you prospects?
Re:Embedded PDF viewer in Firefox 81 supports filling forms on Tuesday September 22, 2020 @08:35PM (#24561646)
I never understood that Google security blog post on how they could make 2 different PDFs with different content have the same SHA but now that you mention you can stuff bytes in a file unrelated to the PDF, it makes sense...
Re:Apple gave me the Hey treatment back in 2014 on Friday June 19, 2020 @12:53AM (#23571087)
I'm ready for the downvotes but I don't think the App Store cut is crazy. They do reduce to 15% if you have long-running subscriptions with your user. Credit cards charge 3% to start. Apple handles distribution, updates, etc. Taking 15% at the end of the day isn't terrible. And hey, they made the super shiny beloved iOS platform too in the first place, not to mention the SDK that makes the apps even possible to build!

DHH is just trying to ride cancel culture to get enough people to tweet / complain towards Apple in hopes that they cave.

Not really the same comparison. That human will eventually be able to take care of itself and do a lot more for this world than the dog ever will. Pets don't always make sense, and I tend to agree with parent.

Or maybe Wag should just connect you one-time with someone reliable in your area. It seems stupid to have strangers all the time with your dog. As the top comment mentioned, people used to just get someone reliable nearby, but the tech has eliminated the need for social interaction and communication.

He's the one doctor whose stuff I've read that I think make most sense. You get a lot of people saying he's crazy, though. Wonder if anyone on HN has ever had any success reversing hair loss? The ultimate hack, if you ask me.
Right, but the cost of you distributing 4x as much software could be next to nothing.
Re:Introducing Cloud Functions for Firebase on Thursday March 09, 2017 @03:30PM (#13833227)
One feature of my app is the PDF creation of invoices and estimates. I use a Java library to make these PDFs. Developing an iOS, web, and Android app that syncs in real-time is much easier (or even possible) when your PDFs are made on the backend.
Re:Introducing Cloud Functions for Firebase on Thursday March 09, 2017 @01:19PM (#13831499)
As a 2+ year user of Firebase, this is long overdue. I built my own cloud function infrastructure using their Java SDK and Digital Ocean and I couldn't have built my app (ProBooks.com) without it. It's good to see Cloud Functions moving from Alpha to Beta!
Re:Ask HN: What service would you pay $1k/mo for? on Tuesday December 06, 2016 @11:00AM (#13115544)
Sounds ridiculously overpriced.
Re:Toronto convicts first Airbnb owner over zoning violation on Thursday November 24, 2016 @12:43PM (#13031573)
Airbnb is a joke. Who the hell would actually rent their home out to a complete stranger for a $100 payday one weekend?

Not to mention you can just rent out a single room in your home. Like you want some stranger to temporarily live with you for a day or two and invade your privacy, all for just a few dollars.

The site was clearly meant to look one way yet allow people to run illegal hotels. The only people I've ever heard renting out on Airbnb are ones who buy homes specifically for Airbnb.

Airbnb is everything that is wrong with SV, so disconnected from the real world. I just don't understand who would let totally random strangers from the internet live amongst them or even just their possessions.

Re:How Breakfast Became a Thing on Tuesday May 10, 2016 @12:23AM (#11665138)
Funny, I was thinking the exact opposite after I had been on the site for 10 minutes or so.

It's sad that you get sites making 'slideshows' getting 20 page views per visit for stupid slideshows like 'Celebrities who have had DUIs'. Meanwhile, something educational and informational makes 5% as much as those other guys? Just because I have only loaded the page once?

You can't pay wall it, because then you don't get the 50,000 visits from HN. It sounds like a really tough position to be in.

Re:So, you want to learn bookkeeping on Monday March 07, 2016 @09:05PM (#11243134)
Doesn't Yelp for doctors, lawyers, accountants, etc solve this problem?
Re:Stevia: Human-readable auto-layout in code on Monday March 07, 2016 @09:00PM (#11243122)
Actually laying things out in iOS, coming from an Android background, was something I could just not grasp. It was a big driving factor in me going with Ionic, which lets me use flexbox.
And this isn't the same law the 1 days are using? Are you suggesting that DK and FD will end up doing season long paid sports and everyone will be OK with it?
No, pretty sure fantasy sports is legal because people do it for fun / a bet amongst themselves. Maybe I'm wrong but I haven't seen any season-long fantasy sports sites (like Yahoo) offering millions of dollars in prizes in exchange for your wager.
Re:Kinto – open-source alternative to Firebase and Parse on Monday December 14, 2015 @04:40PM (#10734132)
I've done exactly that - integrated Stripe with our Firebase-backed app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.twansoftwa...). My method was to use App Engine as the callback component to handle Stripe webhooks.

I also do have custom server code, which was a little bit tough to get going, but it's great having a dedicated Linux box as well.

Re:Ask HN: Can you help me understand why I am so tired? on Friday February 27, 2015 @11:55PM (#9122838)
Have you considered seasonal affective disorder? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seasonal_affective_disorder

You mentioned the cold. I find my energy levels are a lot lower when there is less sunlight.

Re:Show HN: Localmint - Quickly find local store opening hours on Monday September 15, 2014 @10:13AM (#8318988)
I would go to Yelp for this info (usually the store hours). The site looks good but just throwing that out there, I don't think you have any info that Yelp doesn't.
