Re:Facebook's Zuckerberg discloses steps to fight fake news on Monday November 21, 2016 @06:50AM (#13004681)
> I wonder how labelling would work with news like saddam hussain's weapons of mass destruction - reported by cia, backed by the goverment as truth, but turns out it was all fake.

There's no need to talk technical about graph nodes and machine learning. It's very simple - the fake news labels are, and will always be biased in favor of the liberal/progressive/Democrat agenda. Objective news is a lie. No one wants to hear it. We want echo chambers that make us feel good. The labels will shift to accommodate this desire.

> Basically, I've come to the conclusion that college is not for all.

Of course college is not for all. It is not something everyone just "does" because of "jobs". High schoolers and college students feel entitled. The vast majority should not be in college nor do they need a college education. If you are an 18-20 year old and cannot see this, then you sure as hell should not be in college.

Intellectual exploration? Community college is good enough. Parents taking $40K/year loans for tuition/rent for your private or flagship state university? Majoring in humanities? Ha. Go ask those graduates if college was worth it.

> Basic income. Free tuition. An outright grant, no repayments. Literally zero barriers except ability for anyone, for any level of academic achievement in anything. Result: a culture with a lot more understanding of the real world, and the preservation of human and humane values, rather than a laser focus on the hand-to-mouth of Jobs Right Now.

Incorrect. This will foster a culture of inferiority because not everyone is equal. No matter what you do, the lower class will be jealous of the upper class and will always demand for more.

Money and education is solved? What about universal access to entertainment? Universal food? Universal housing?

You want him to handhold you and tell you exactly how to make a quick dollar? Ha.

Perhaps you should stop trying to do all your intensive college assignments on a machine optimized for portability and use a proper workstation or desktop. You know, the "old" computers?

Re:A $900B Oil Treasure Lies Beneath West Texas Desert on Sunday November 20, 2016 @02:40AM (#12997784)
So you would rather us directly fund oppressionist governments around the world, just so you can feel better for the 50 people living in the town next door to the oil fields? Ok.
Re:Q and A: The future of artificial intelligence on Saturday November 19, 2016 @12:42PM (#12994505)
Of course AI will increase inequality... AI will be baked into more expensive products which the poor cannot afford.

Assuming a $400/month engineer, 1 month.

Like AWS?

Re:Obama bans new oil drilling in Arctic Ocean on Saturday November 19, 2016 @09:32AM (#12993628)
Maybe you should make a business? But I guess working for someone else is just too damn easy to feed your family...

The Amazon "thing" is most definitely enabled on the sidebar by default in 16.04.
Re:Pascal GPUs on All Fronts Push Nvidia to New Highs on Monday November 14, 2016 @07:53AM (#12949464)
You realize that deep learning is such a small market and will be small in the context of GPUs?
Re:Peter Thiel To Join Trump Transition Team on Friday November 11, 2016 @03:34AM (#12928960)
You think someone in debt would be smart enough to prod half the country as sheep into voting for him? Ha. America got trolled and was given the middle finger. We get it, you're upset. But listen to what the Democrat thought leaders are saying: stop dividing the country with your continued rhetoric in your comment.

Re:Trump’s sweep could be a big setback to Tesla and Elon Musk on Thursday November 10, 2016 @05:18PM (#12925030)
Oh, come on. A major reason people buy Tesla vehicles because they "want to do their part" for the environment.
Re:Peter Thiel’s Bet on Donald Trump Wins Big on Wednesday November 09, 2016 @06:16PM (#12915835)
I voted for Trump. I'm also a distinguished engineer at Google in Mountain View, CA.
Re:Donald Trump Is Elected President on Wednesday November 09, 2016 @04:44PM (#12914974)
I can assure you that the 59-60 million people who voted for Trump do not all live in the countryside. The Trump voters also live right along with you, including in Silicon Valley. As mentioned before, they don't say anything because liberals immediately call them racist bigot white supremacists, even if they are an immigrant.
Re:Donald Trump Is Elected President on Wednesday November 09, 2016 @04:32PM (#12914879)
The world is a scary place. Did you not know that? Bullies, liars, and cheaters win. That's the unfortunate truth.
The computer doesn't even know what a kill is.
Re:The Mega Rich Have Found an Unlikely New Refuge on Friday November 04, 2016 @04:25PM (#12875782)
I'm probably one of the people you hate. Global warming is real and is accelerated by humans. I still don't give a damn. I will throw all my waste in the trash and drive gasoline vehicles. I'll let someone else fix it.

Re:Ways Data Projects Fail on Wednesday November 02, 2016 @04:47PM (#12859113)
Did you not see the Who is Hiring thread yesterday...?
That's the problem with college kids and new grads.

The truth is not always respectful. And given the recent poll numbers, they are in for a disrespectful awakening.

People on HN like to complain (expected from the 18-25 year old crowd). But at the end of the day, they realize business is business and will do what's necessary to survive.

Boycott Thiel in front of your friends (a public position) but continue secretly dealing with him (a private) position. Sound oddly familiar...

Re:Begin LaTeX in minutes on Sunday October 30, 2016 @04:26PM (#12832045)
Furthermore, Overleaf has a history of occasionally losing people's data. That's bad for college and university folks.
Re:Clinton Circle on Friday October 28, 2016 @11:19PM (#12822458)
Would "by Berkeley" make you feel better?
I'm a medium-name in deep learning (10K unique visitors to my personal website each day) and I have never heard of any of the Skymind founders. Sorry but this all seems like a PR stunt for Skymind since nearly everyone is using Python/C++ for deep learning and not Java/Scala.

I've heard of Skymind, just not the founders.

Yeah, we're not allowed to use high signal attributes because it tells the truth and makes people feel bad. Might as well select people randomly since they won't work for it...
Re:When a Chinese PhD Student Meets a German Supervisor [pdf] on Saturday October 22, 2016 @03:21PM (#12770162)
> To put it into perspective, consider a US college where there is only a few Chinese or Indian students, chances are they will naturally interact more with locals.

No, they aren't. Your original premise is incorrect. Those Chinese and Indian students are going back to their dorms/apartments and watching TV shows in their own languages and communicating with friends/families back home. The number has nothing to do with it. It's all about culture.

Spot on. This is exactly how the HN crowd thinks. In fact, this extends to most people between 18-25.

"It's okay if I do it, but not if others do it to me."

"It's okay for me to ask brain teasers and textbook algorithms questions during an interview. But if I'm asked those questions, screw that company."

"I think we should have universal basic income for everyone. But I don't want to pay for it."

"It's okay to encourage whistleblowers, unless they are reporting on me. In that case, put them to jail and fine them please!"

The list goes on...
