NVAccess.org manages the NVDA screenreader which is free and open source. It's what I rely on to use a computer.

It's also stealing massive market share from JAWS.

Have you published this list yet? I'd be very interested to take a look.
Re:Show HN: Voice - An iOS App that lets blind people read on Tuesday August 05, 2014 @01:42PM (#8138206)
Very excited to see more people working on accessible applications!

How is this different from TextDetective, or other OCR apps for the blind?

The accessibility community is very small and highly networked. I can introduce you to individual developers if you are interested. I guess HN doesn't allow Private Messages, but you can find me on linkedin linkedin.com/in/chrmaury

Does anyone know of a link to download this resource? I'm not confident that it will remain active, especially after all of this attention.
Re:How blind people use Instagram [video] on Friday January 04, 2013 @01:08PM (#5008841)
You're right. iOS has a feature called screen curtain, which turns your screen off while using Voice Over. Great for battery life (and privacy).

I would love to see a gameplay video on the iPad. The controls could be very tough...

Or Apple's Airplay

Thank you! This is the point I was trying to make in the article. I don't think I articulated it all that well. The technology exists, it's just branded incorrectly.

I regret that I only have one upvote to give.

Re:What if there were a $1 fee to post to HN? on Sunday March 18, 2012 @08:46PM (#3721672)
I would fully except there to be people with deep pockets paying more often than others, but that's an interesting thought. How much would that affect the content being produced.

The pay wall was exactly what I was thinking. It would get users used to paying for upvotes, and then when that money runs out, their credit card is already linked, and makes it easier to fill up.

The main goal is to create a market which supports high quality/high cost content.

Re:What if there were a $1 fee to post to HN? on Sunday March 18, 2012 @08:35PM (#3721635)
The problem is creating a market for content creation. The idea is that if you can generate revenu from quality content, then more quality content will be generated. Think of what Etsy has done for small craft products or what hollywood has done for movies. HN and reddit have created enough of a viewership that an upvote has some amount of value. However that value is only enough to support link aggregation, blog posts, and other low value items.

the idea behind charging to post/upvote is to generate enough of a return to warrant higher value content creation.

There is a really good talk by Jonathan Zittrain on the dangers of crowd sourcing. I think it speaks to your point.

Yea, broken machines or people getting mugged right after cashing out are both concerns. But the people who would benefit most from something like this would be least likely to have a bank account.
Re:Responsive Text on Wednesday February 15, 2012 @06:31PM (#3596662)
Brilliant!

Are you using the Summly API to condense the text?

Could be a good solution to @kyle's comment.

The Main Points of the bill as I can tell:

1. Patents are awarded based on first to file not first to invent. 2. More funding to decrease wait times for filers 3. Patent Review process for challenges

Why, did I hear about this first from WaPo/AP an not TechCrunch?

Oh. yea.
