News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

christophilus

If I’m mathing right, your own numbers suggest they’re spending nearly double their quarterly revenue, every month. That sounds far from reasonable to me.

Yeah. That's the joke. My comment was a followup joke, but I guess I should have added a /s to make that clearer.
Re:Private Jet plane crashes in Florida on Monday November 02, 2026 @07:48AM (#50336116)
Don’t just crash. Was full throttle into the ground, by the looks of it.
Re:Show HN: Hacker News but for comments posted on HN on Monday November 02, 2026 @07:44AM (#50336081)
This is a really good idea. And you captured that HN aesthetic perfectly. The only thing I don’t like about it is that it doesn’t feel AI slop enough.
Re:US Jobs Pickup May Keep Fed on Track to Hike Rates Again on Sunday November 01, 2026 @04:26PM (#50330066)
Yes. It is covered in various books. Galbraith covered it in “Money…”[0] I’m not totally sure you can draw parallels to the old world, though. The modern economy seems so different, but basically, rates seem to follow the course of a civilization. IIRC, Low when things are stable, higher at the edges as things destabilize. It’s been a few years since I read the book, though, and I may be misremembering things.

In the standard library, there are some allocators with free, so it looks like you’re expected to call those. It is strange that none of the examples seem to cover this, though.
It doesn’t look like it cares about indentation. It’s more like Basic or Ruby.
Re:Serbia just elected the world's brainiest parliament on Saturday October 31, 2026 @07:39AM (#50315119)
Maybe. Politics is a skill, and not everyone has a knack for it. It’s dirty, requires compromise, and a willingness to work with your opponents. Or, well, at least it used to.

Dunno about the font, but the copy on this page is 100% Claude.

Re:Poll: How do you run your coding agents day to day? on Friday October 30, 2026 @11:57AM (#50305783)
In a podman sandbox, using Niri to manage terminal instances.
Re:Google Search is now less than half of Alphabet’s revenue on Thursday October 29, 2026 @12:55PM (#50292200)
Yeah. I was going to say. I really dislike Google, but what they did with YouTube (whose acquisition I saw as a mistake at the time) is impressive.
Or, we come up with a system that actually follows the rhythms of nature, rather than forcing a standard schedule year round. Like, I get up later and go to bed earlier in the winter like pretty much every other mammal on the planet, and the 9-5 can shove it. This has nothing to do with clocks changing. Just our patterns changing.

I’d like a single, consistent way to mark time, but that shouldn’t dictate my seasonal schedule and rhythms.

Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @01:43PM (#50277714)
I dislike it very much. It's never what I want, and in the cases where I have it, it generally only gets used accidentally (e.g. when one of my kids pokes the screen). It's not ergonomic for normal use.
In the US, I heard lots of conspiracies about who was really behind the BLM riots, Charlottesville, Jan 6th, the Trump assassination attempts, etc.

The same thing is happening here in the comments. Everyone is looking for the puppeteer. I’m not sure one way or the other.

On the one hand, it’s true that when you look through history, you often find that there was a “someone” (e.g. the Germans funding the Bolshevik Revolution, or the CIA shenanigans in the Middle East and South America).

On the other hand, can’t these things also legitimately arise from disenfranchised groups without needing to point to a boogie man?

I agree with your first statement, but I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying here:

> there’s really no first principles reason for any legitimacy

Do you mean in this case, or are you making a blanket statement about the nature of morality and power?

Re:Wealth Inequality in America drawn to scale on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @07:27AM (#50271867)
And, you’d better pin it to inflation, or in 50 years, you’re back to the same granny problem.
Re:Nvidia and Micron Make Up 34% of America's Earnings Boom on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @07:15PM (#50267227)
More like a temporary market fluctuation or maybe bubble.
Re:Ghostty 1.4.0 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @02:32PM (#50263687)
Yeah. It's slow on Linux, for sure. I use Foot, which as far as I've tested is the fastest to launch. I use Niri and launch Foot terminals all the time as part of my workflow (it's just how my mind works), so time to launch matters to me.
My former boss at Microsoft told me this sort of thing is a good way to get rid of your best, most employable employees. I guess he didn’t pass the memo up the chain.
More like, I moved from Wallace and Grommit self walking pants back to regular pants.
Image optimization is the only thing in that list I might care about, and every CDN I’ve ever used provides it out of the box.
Re:How Japanese Dried Bonito Is Made on Sunday October 25, 2026 @06:37PM (#50236733)
I was curious what the paste was. According to Brave search AI (whatever LLM that is): The paste used on dried bonito (known as katsuobushi) is made from the fish’s own head and scrapings (called nakaochi), which are mixed with the fish’s own flesh.
Re:Why I Am a Programmer on Sunday October 25, 2026 @06:30PM (#50236687)
For me, it was the creative, puzzle-solving, game-like nature of it. Then I got my first job, and I had 100% autonomy, so a friend of mine and I got to solve real problems for real people in the real world. It was a rush. Making people’s lives better through software is still the biggest motivation for me.
Re:Why is AI generated language so hard to understand? on Saturday October 24, 2026 @02:33PM (#50223855)
I think the problem is that LLMs are verbose. They’re like business or self-help books— a lot of filler.
I’ll reply, rather than edit: here’s an update from Zelenskyy: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50221788

Political pressure seems to have worked.

Well, it’ll take years to bring capacity back online, so that ship has sailed.
Well, even the worst people say true things from time to time. In this case, it seems true. The US dictates how US tech is used, and this particular technology is of military significance, so I’m inclined to believe it.
Re:The Best Monopoly Strategy, Tested on 300M Games [video] on Saturday October 24, 2026 @06:39AM (#50219954)
No. Only if the player declines to buy it.
Yeah. If someone talked to me like that, I’d really want to slap them. I hope no one gets the bright idea of building a customer support bot around this tech.
Re:Quad9 (DNS Resolver) to Exit France on Thursday October 22, 2026 @12:04PM (#50197264)
Fine, as long as they aren't the only ones who get to do it. Having the world's knowledge at everyone's fingertips is a goal I think we should aim for.
