Re:Ask HN: Freelancers, what's your hourly rate? on Friday May 20, 2022 @12:14AM (#31443277)
Oops! I meant 15 years.
Re:Ask HN: Freelancers, what's your hourly rate? on Thursday May 19, 2022 @02:26AM (#31431366)
I retired a several years ago (2018). I'm 60 (2022) now.

I was getting $150/hour. I charged by the hour.

I live in Nashua, NH. I think location really effects what you can charge.

Over the 4+ years I worked as contractor, among things I worked on:

- Radar displays/GUI (solo, in person, job shop).

- Laser scanning (solo).

- Medical scanning/GUI - the computer vision part (solo)

- Computer vision for protecting operators (solo, job shop).

To get work, I talked to former employers (direct) and sometimes the indirect kind (through a job shop).

I love these pens (TUL). I was also surprised that they weren’t mentioned.
Re:Ask HN: Does anyone else code in bed? on Thursday October 28, 2021 @06:50PM (#29033050)
I have played with Python on my tablet (Pythonista). Does that make me an “em-bedded” programmer?
Re:Why so many of us are casual spider-murderers on Sunday October 10, 2021 @02:05PM (#28820592)
As the “man of the household”, my jobs include repairing the mailbox and putting spiders outside.

When the wife tells me there is a spider in the shower I reply: "Oh, you mean Steve?"

Spiders eat the mosquitos so that's plus.

Re:Ask HN: How Do You Learn? on Monday September 13, 2021 @03:02PM (#28515365)
I'm a lazy software developer.

I can't take a book and make myself learn ("push"). Instead, I find a project I'm interested in and let it "pull" me in. Sort of the difference between studying a French book ("push") and actually going to live in France ("pull") with French people. You still bring the book of course.

Not sure what's going with your account but I upvoted you.
I use Waze (on the iPhone) and it doesn't have that problem.
Auto play!
Re:Ask HN: Do You Use a Debugger? on Monday August 23, 2021 @03:36PM (#28280871)
I use Visual Studio to trace through code I’ve written recently to see if it’s doing what I meant it to. It’s like proof reading.

(Professional coder since 1987.)

I can't believe Apple blew her off like that.

I believe he/she is being sarcastic.
Re:The elemental strangeness of foxes on Wednesday June 16, 2021 @09:40PM (#27535400)
I love foxes too.

Here are a couple of books on them I liked:

"The Sprite: The Story of a Red Fox" https://www.amazon.com/Sprite-Story-Red-Fox/dp/B001JL4JWY

"Red fox: The Catlike Canine" https://www.amazon.com/Red-fox-Catlike-Canine-Smithsonian/dp...

Forgive my trespass. I meant no spite or ill will.

As an American, I had to converted the number to mm and the divided it by 25.4 and again by 12. I figured I save somebody else the trouble.

(I upvoted you.)

184cm = 6ft
I didn't see it mentioned, but the whale shark is even larger. One whale shark was found to be 62 feet long. (Yes, I know: "one of the world's largest")

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whale_shark

When we kill all the predators, deer will eat everything and then starve. You can hunt them or reintroduce their predators.
My IDE is VS2017. I'd like a couple of things:

1. It would be nice to right click on a file in the solution explorer and have the menu include "Open File Location".

2. When working with C++, it would be nice is it helped with #include's i.e. give me the relative pathname. Don't make me compile it to find out if the file address is right.

For other spam, I forward it to "[email protected]".

Very sad.

It's the original "ad supported" business.

As opposed to insurance companies determining who would die?

"The good news is this means the recruiter is incentivized to help you negotiate higher pay"

Not really. Like realters, "Real estate agents do not generally represent the buyer," says Florida real-estate attorney Barry Ansbacher. "But buyers think they do."

"After graduating from medical school, DOs take a rigorous national licensure exam, which contains the same material as the exam to become an MD. Both kinds of doctor are licensed by state medical examination boards."

Only people who don't wear tin foil hats would be employed I guess.
Re:“Location-Based Pay” – Who are we to complain? on Sunday February 14, 2021 @02:03PM (#26135084)
".., and I have to wonder if “location-based pay” works in both directions. I live in suburban London, ten-ish Tube stops from the belly of the beast. If I worked remotely for Facebook and wanted to move somewhere central where rents are three times higher, would Zuck give me a raise? Somehow I doubt it."
Put you retirement funds in something like Vanguard. Vanguard is customer owned but any low load broad based index fund will work.
