unrealized capital gains ≠ income.
Re:Taxing Mechanical Engineers and Subsidizing Drama Majors on Monday September 19, 2022 @12:08PM (#32900229)
Student loans actually can be discharged in bankruptcy. There’s been this myth floating around for awhile. Yes it is harder and it’s a bit more work for your lawyer but is absolutely doable.
basically this.

in these mostly socialist countries, the top income bracket starts much much lower than in the US. these countries tax the middle class and consumption with VAT ranging from 15-21% on consumption. in spain the top bracket starts around 60,000 euros a year and its 45% not including local tax.

these policies and similar ones in other countries in effect keep the rich rich and make it much, much harder for the poor/middle class to move up.

there's already a tax on wealth/savers, its called inflation.
Re:Barcelona Fines Landlords Who Let Buildings Sit Empty on Monday March 18, 2019 @09:50PM (#19427348)
in a very wealth neighborhood of Honolulu, think where the average home is 4-5+ Million USD, a japanese owner of many houses 20+ wanted to build a gallery for his art. the wealthy neighbors didnt want it so what he did instead was rent all of his houses to low income hawaiians and put the art out on one of his vacant lots. they were mainly weird statues. naked greek gods etc. Just goes to show what people can do when sufficiently motivated.

for anyone that wants to read further his name is Kawamoto and he was recently arrested for Tax evasion in japan and was forced to sell his Kahala Homes Portfolio

the game wasn't played to win the popular vote. if the rules of the game are different, the game is played differently.
amazon has required me to re-enter card numbers when shipping to an address not associated with that card. I have bought on Amazon in the US, Spain and Mexico with this happening each time.
Re:Titan launches its mobile ‘not a hedge fund’ on Tuesday August 21, 2018 @04:23PM (#17813422)
i second this opinion. past results are not indicative of future ones.

The question is if you dont follow the passive ETF/index strategy what do you do? In that regard i suppose its better than doing nothing.

They can elect to be taxed as a c Corp but I would think the vast majority are taxed as a corps or as partnerships.
LLCs are passthrough entities so you pay what your personal rate. You still pay self employment tax however this might spur some to change their structure to benefit from new tax proposal

Edit: there is also a proposal to change how partnerships and pass through entities are to be taxed.

In Lisbon there's been quite a bit of foreign investment due to their visa program so you have the property market propped up from that.
Re:Why I Only Work Remotely on Wednesday December 21, 2016 @03:23PM (#13232296)
I've been 100% remote for the last 8 years. I recently have been commuting for personal reasons and its only 30 min each way and I can already feel the drain it causes. Over a working career a normal commute(30min-1hour) each way can add up to a massive amount of lost time. Working remote is optimal for the kind of work I'm doing now. Previously I was running a larger business and we started to run into issues around 50 people on a remote team. There's advantages to both. I think the ideal environment is 4 days remote, 1 day in an office for in person meetings. To combat being out of contact with people in the business/industry, I attend as many conferences and meetups as I can.
Re:Body fat link to bacteria in feces on Monday September 26, 2016 @12:58PM (#12583480)
Isn't it possible that families tend to eat similar foods/diets and this social construct creates the obesity to begin with?

Re:When a Bookstore Closes, an Argument Ends on Sunday June 14, 2015 @01:41AM (#9713840)
same thing happened in my city(honolulu). where there was once a very thriving barnes and noble there is now a Ross dress for less(discount clothing). its sad really. There's only 1 book store left in a metropolitan area with more than 1M people.
Re:Ask HN: What are you doing to improve your health? on Friday April 10, 2015 @01:26PM (#9355794)
working out(surfing, jiu jitsu and interval training), lots of sleep(had to work on getting to bed early enough and shutting down use of computers/electronics before bed), meditation and drinking more water. Also I noticed switching to a standing desk has helped open up my hips and I am generally more flexible when doing Jiu jitsu.
Re:New York Discovers Wall Street Charges Fees on Friday April 10, 2015 @01:18PM (#9355748)
the fee is not on the return its on the balance. so if you make money, they make money. if you lose money they still make money. mutual fund feeds end up being massive over a long period of time which is why financial advisors do so well if they have a big enough asset base
Re:Ask HN: How do you manage your passwords? on Wednesday March 11, 2015 @01:42PM (#9185378)
lastpass premium, works well across all my devices. for a little more security you can use a yubikey with lasspass. this isnt without its issues but i think its sufficient for most.
I'd say it depends on what the costs are. If he has to rack up a TON of student loan debt it may not make much sense. You can make friends and social connections outside of school if you create the environment to do that. Its a lot easier in school but to avoid the traps of student loan debt its probably better to continue making/creating software if thats the end goal.
Re:Online gambling firm Bet365 has swapped Java for Erlang on Monday March 09, 2015 @02:55PM (#9173045)
not surprising when you realize how much volume is going through these systems concurrently.
do you see any upside in entering into this agreement? sounds like you already know the answer to your question but to be safe have a lawyer review and see what downsides could come along with being party to this agreement.

Re:Five-year-old passes Microsoft exam on Friday November 14, 2014 @01:22PM (#8608600)
its great the that kid is learning technology at an early age. but i really hope its not in replacement to learning how to make friends, play and enjoy being a kid. when i hear about how 5 year olds want to start companies it makes me cringe.
Re:Travel Search Site Hipmunk (YC S10) Cuts Yahoo Deal on Tuesday October 28, 2014 @02:14PM (#8522494)
used skyscanner quite a bit in europe however it has good prices on flights globally.
Those sites probably cookied you with an FBX retargeting pixel and then followed you to FB.
I would disagree with you. if executed correctly they can generate a really great return. it entirely depends on what you're promoting and how you're promoting it just like any other channel.
