Everyone I know and their mom is using AI, technical or not. The question is, is it profitable to run a frontier AI lab and sell inference while spending billions on R&D.

Anthropic could be super profitable right now if they stopped developing new models. But then they'd quickly fall behind because there's not much of a moat. Maybe the only ones who will survive this are huge companies like Google with separate incomes who can swallow the cost of staying on top.

Maybe they got a friendly letter from the games industry.
You can take your laptop to a busy place, make a "free wifi" hotspot that runs everything through mitmproxy and you can steal everything.

These are open weight models, nothing is stopping distillation anyway.
I'm Hungarian and there have been countless positive changes in only half a year. The people in charge are also way more competent than the last lot who all got promoted based on loyalty.

* Billions in EU funds restored

* State funded propaganda shut down

* Tax cuts for low earners

* European prosecutor's office joined and anti corruption agency established with real power, crooks already going to jail

* Forint 363 to the euro compared to 400 in 2023

* Homophobic law repealed

* Term limit introduced for MPs and PMs

* Rail overhaul plan

* No more kowtowing to Russia

There's a spectrum between the Netherlands and North Korea.

Personally I think it's a geopolitical play by China to take the US AI labs down a notch. (I'm not complaining.)
I think I'm pretty aware of the implications. It's just not something I have control over. But right now, I'm enjoying getting stuff done. If they eventually take my job or upend civilization, it's going to happen whether I use them or not.
It can't really do it yet, but if it will, then it's out of my control and I'll have to find another job.
I agree. The part I enjoyed was designing interesting solutions to problems, the coding itself was often tedious. Now I can just focus on the fun and creative part.
Re:I Love Software Rendering on Friday October 16, 2026 @01:49PM (#50121785)
Sure, software rendering mostly used nearest neighbor, but it's not crisp because it's software rendering, which is what the article claims.
Re:I Love Software Rendering on Friday October 16, 2026 @11:03AM (#50119261)
"Software" isn't the point. You can do the exact same math on CPU or GPU. OpenGL supports nearest neighbor texture filtering on whatever hardware you run it on since 1992, one year before Doom even came out.
Both can be true. OpenAI clearly fucked up but agents unexpectedly collaborating and hacking infrastructure unrelated to their task is clearly going rogue.

I don't know, that's exactly what Opus 5.5 feels like to me.
Is Ukraine using Starshield or the commercial one? I thought it was the latter.

You had to make your website work for IE users with weird tricks because among other things it had a different way of rendering CSS.
Re:Gemini 4 Argon on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @09:12PM (#50081166)
The thing is that if you do know what it's talking about then it gets you the information the quickest that way. If you're not an expert you can always ask it to explain. I don't want it to ELI5 by default.
Re:Gemini 4 Argon on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @08:21PM (#50080829)
I wouldn't even call it a quirk or a chance encounter, every response it gives is sycophantic and overwritten.
Re:Gemini 4 Argon on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @12:41PM (#50074626)
I'm the opposite, I found Gemini so annoying that I had to stop using it, Claude was a breath of fresh air afterwards.
Re:QGIS bans AI assisted contributions on Monday October 12, 2026 @03:00PM (#50061150)
Plenty of them annoy millions of people but there wasn't any budget or time to fix it.
Re:Citroen revives the 2CV for an electric age on Monday October 12, 2026 @02:55PM (#50061084)
It didn't have an EV battery either.
Re:QGIS bans AI assisted contributions on Monday October 12, 2026 @07:43AM (#50054939)
Will it? Plenty of open source projects have bugs unfixed for decades because it's too tedious to fix by hand and would take five minutes with AI these days. I've also found that good LLMs can be more diligent in updating comments, tests, etc.
Re:Terence Tao: Math 2.0 [pdf] on Sunday October 11, 2026 @11:15AM (#50044200)
...his point is we don't know if it is a cure or not, and it would be good if humans had an idea instead of just having to take the AI's word for it.

What if it takes your five years to live down to two in horrible agony?
Only if they did it in public.
Right, because it's illegal.
