News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

I've faced this issue as well.

I run a Python script after the build has completed that reads the entire sitemap and chunks it into parts of 50k.

+1 for mentioning incremental builds as well. These two features are often overlooked and people just ask "why do you even have so many pages?" and it ends there because nobody wants to entertain the power user.

A third disadvantage I've seen is search. I use fuse to generate a JSON for client side search but it takes a lot of memory to render and is a cause for concern.

I'd just like to say that this is one of the most beautiful websites I've ever seen!

Glad to see this. I saw your talks on YouTube when I was going over serverless and those were a joy to watch.

This is such a shame. While I don't blame the people at EasyList, this is a huge drawback.
Re:GitHub Container Registry on Wednesday September 02, 2020 @08:36AM (#24352597)
It would be a valid security pattern if it was created under the org scope, but it isn't.

A "service account" on GitHub is just another user account tied to a real user with that users MFA (if MFA is enabled, and since we're referring to valid security patterns, it should be).

GitHub's organizational features are poor.

Would've been super useful if you mentioned what countries you currently support. I went to sign up and closed the tab feeling disappointed.
The beauty of Python is in the fact than anyone can pick it up. It helps teach logic and programming constructs to people outside software as well.

With tech being a core part of many jobs these days it's essential that everyone knows at least the basics. Python is great for that purpose.

This is awesome! I was looking for something to teach children programming with. (10-12 years onwards)

Your project looks amazing. I hope I can find ways to contribute.

Curious to know why you think so? ECS is a managed service. If Swarm was a managed service on AWS, I'd agree with you here but that's not the case.

Swarm is still brilliant for running multi-node deployments.

You don't need Windows to use Active Directory.

Feel free to take it for a spin and learn about it. AWS doesn't (can't) include it in it's AWS offering so you'll have to buy Redis Enterprise.

DDG was blocked for the past several days. The issue came up on /r/duckduckgo and /r/india, following which the Internet Freedom Foundation wrote to the Department of Telecom [1]

DDG is working for me again (it's my default search engine) so that's a relief. In the past, the government or the ISPs in India have nonchalantly blocked several websites and even NSFW sub-reddits. The IFF even has a dump of blocking orders issued by courts leaked by a whistleblower. [2]

I said this in continuation to the line you quoted:

> You can run it across any (or almost) system, from Linux to Windows and even networking devices. You can create modules in any language you want.

This is abstracted in YAML so that anyone who uses any modules does not need to know the language it is written in. Only the YAML syntax.

Re:Ansible Alternatives in Python on Saturday June 13, 2020 @02:31AM (#23507317)
If you feel YAML is too complicated for you, a host of problems await for anything you want to do in infrastructure...

Ansible has it's own set of features that are largely abstracted out by it's YAML playbook syntax. You can run it across any (or almost) system, from Linux to Windows and even networking devices. You can create modules in any language you want.

For speeding up Ansible runs, a number of optimisations can be made including using Mitogen https://mitogen.networkgenomics.com/ansible_detailed.html

Alternatives listed in the blog post don't even come close to the speed and power of Ansible.

Great way to botch user experience since the user has to download the index.
Re:India orders coronavirus tracing app for all workers on Saturday May 02, 2020 @03:16PM (#23054166)
The government enforced a lockdown out of the blue, stopping trains and buses from moving.

Migrant workers who were stranded tried to go back home by walking hundreds of miles but cops would see them and punish them. Punishment in this case is beating the crap out of them using batons, bamboo sticks, and making them do situps and bunny hop instead of walking back home.

Doesn't matter why you're outside. Cops have attacked hundreds and even killed many in India for not enforcing the lockdown.

Yes, that's because phishing is an actual crime.
I worked for HCL right out of college.

If I asked people whom I worked with to guess my salary, they couldn't even come close. I made about $180 per month with 48 hour work weeks.

The creator of Bayard is apparently the co-created of Solr.

Bayard looks like a search-in-rust PoC.

Kudos. You've gone and done something a lot of us only plan to do but never get around to.

I have a few questions though.

1. Does this work for everyone around the world?

2. How many ways do you have for sorting through transactions and making sense out of these?

3. My bank statements are a huge mess and I'd love a way I could aggregate all of my spend across multiple banks and cards. Sometimes, I send money to a friend only to get it back after a few days (or months, even). Would be great if you could link 2 transactions together like this as well.

Re:Maybe We Should Stop Creating Inscrutable CLIs on Saturday August 17, 2019 @12:52PM (#20724873)
Can you elaborate on this?

I've been a huge fan of PowerShell ever since I started using it (over two years now) and it's my go-to scripting language on my workstation. You can write integrations in the form of modules - VMware has Power CLI, Azure and AWS both have great PowerShell modules.

Why would you say it's not a real programming language? It's as powerful as Bash and seems to do the job quite nicely in most cases for scripting.
