Re:DEF CON bans Meta-style 'pervert glasses' on Wednesday July 29, 2026 @07:11AM (#49095911)
There is no such ban at DEF CON. They only ban smart glasses etc. «that can record audio or video with no consistent way to understand if they're recording or not».

Meta smart glasses in particular are known for their LED.

So DEF CON has restrictions for photography, but as long as you do not hide your smart glasses' activity LED, you can just walk around and record everything as audio and video?

Full text at https://defcon.org/html/links/dc-photo-policy.html:

«Smart glasses and other devices that can record audio or video with no consistent way to understand if they're recording or not, are prohibited at DEF CON, they erode trust and invade people's privacy.»

(Last paragraph. The other paragraphs refer to photography.)

They have never had a domicile in Germany. In Dubai, there is basically an empty office room used as their domicile.
How do you use Tresorit for backup?
Sub-Saharan Africa has of course also suffered greatly from SARS-CoV-2, they just have not the means to count their cases. SARS-CoV-2 does not behave differently in Africa than in other regions of the world, especially not in low-vaccination (or even no-vaccination) countries.

«Rather than an ‹African paradox,› the far simpler explanation is that COVID-19 has affected African countries just as the virus has everywhere else, but has gone undocumented.»

In countries with a younger population, less deaths from acute COVID-19 are expected, although the number of additional direct deaths from COVID-19 is still substantial. The disease burden burden, i.e., morbidity, also remains high, maybe even more given the sub-par health infrastructure.

Re:Reverse engineering Xiaomi air purifier NFC stickers on Saturday May 28, 2022 @10:52AM (#31540791)
In automatic mode, different ppm level should result in higher fan speeds. That is at least the case with my filters. Cooking for example can be a trigger.

You are of course right that automatic mode does not do much. At the same time, higher fan speeds are noticeable (and annoying).

Re:Reverse engineering Xiaomi air purifier NFC stickers on Saturday May 28, 2022 @10:50AM (#31540776)
The filter durability is time-based in my experience:

I set up several air purifiers at the same time in December 2021 but used them in different areas, i.e., with different filter loads. The air purifiers ran 24/7 and mostly in automatic mode, except for some hours after known possible coronavirus exposures.

Official end of filter life was reached after about five months and for all filters on the same day. The air purifiers are still running tough, that's a plus!

Xiaomi recommends to replace filters every 6 to 12 months. The recommendation, however, is based on the use in polluted Asian cities, I guess. We have rather clean air here. I therefore assume that it is safe to use the filter for an additional few months.

Re:Insect Hotel on Thursday April 14, 2022 @09:27AM (#31026669)
A company in Switzerland has an interesting business model:

You buy a bee hotel (or bee hotels). They provide you with a tube containing a few fresh bee larvae every year before the wild bee season. After the season, you return the filled tubes. They remove parasites etc. and sell the resulting bee larvae for their commercial business with farmers etc. The biannual exchange is free. There is also minimal gamification because you can compare your success with other bee hotel owners from the same company.

Romania is a former member of the Warsaw Pact and has therefore still MIGs in service.
Why does a website need to know my zoom level, i.e., why is this information even made available?
I’m wondering which legal entity has filed the complaint. Telegram has always been reluctant to provide transparency on its ownership and the legal entities in charge.

That sounds great, however, 'just launched' doesn't sound too promising.

In addition, I'm not sure whether you are GDPR-compliant as claimed at https://jumpcloud.com/gdpr. Where's your Privacy Shield certification and who's your EU representative according to art. 27 GDPR?

Wow, without third-party apps, FS has become mostly useless.

That's a lot of pain for admins, especially in a SME environment where I'm not aware of any viable alternatives …

Re:Covid-19 update and guidance to limit spread on Tuesday March 10, 2020 @05:06PM (#22539691)
Testing is very limited in many countries. In Switzerland for example, testing is only done for very limited groups of persons with severe and for some medical staff. Broad testing never took place.
