As an idiot I take offence

Ask HN: Interested in a video editing and title animation service?

My startup idea fell recently died so I'm back to the drawing board. I'm a 3D animator and motion graphics designer by trade and was wondering if any of you guys would be interested in having someone help you out by having a professional edit your demo videos and make slick looking title animations for them.<p>If you would be interested, what would you else expect from such a...

Boring AND sleazy. Now I'm intrigued.

How many plugins did you write? Also, how do you handle payment, licensing and such?

Making about $40/day extra would help a lot currently and I'm not bad with jQuery. I can probably hack together some simple yet usefull php scripts too. Wonder if those would sell?

Ask HN: Lead generation sites and Adwords

I'm in the process of teaching myself how to be an expert in marketing and lead generation. I do this, I must confess, because I tried to learn coding, was pretty mediocre and wisely chose to focus on the other, more interesting side of start ups and business ventures. Anyhow I digress.I asked on some Adwords forums and I can't seem to find a definite answer to this. Would I be banned by...

Re:Ask HN: Do I hide the fact that I am a sole-founder? on Monday March 07, 2011 @06:10AM (#2296754)
a/b test it.
What boggles my mind is that tech events in San Francisco don't print name badge automatically on admission. 0_0

I live in South Africa and pretty much any trade show or event I have gone to in the last 4 years have had name badges printed at the door on admission. Or am I missing something here?

Good luck man! I'm sure if you just keep at it it'll work out fine.

But a word of advice, be careful that you and your wife's relationship won't be jeopardized by working together. I don't know either of you but from observing my friends it could put an untold amount of pressure on your relationship.

Your wife will essentially stop being your soother and turn into a business partner(one you live with D:) and thus another source of pressure.

Care to elaborate? I read it too and it really inspired my but I just can't seem to pull off a successful muse.

When and how should I start with marketing.

I have a startup I'm working on(yes, sole founder, yes I know it's going to be tough) which I estimate would be ready for alpha users in about 4 months time.I have a email register for those interested on the site at the moment. Should I focus on marking only when I have an actual working product? Also, what would be the best methods to market my product when it's ready?

Yeah sure. But something tells me it'll be less technical people who'll use this service(which is better imho :D) so I'd focus on a simpler plug and play solution.

But setting up an API wouldn't be too hard so why not.

I think its cool. :)

Here's a suggestion though. Seeing as its an appointment making service basically most companies would like to have this service through their own sites.

So, it would be rad if you made a javascript plugin that your clients can pop in their own sites so that their clients can make appointments right from their own site.

Ha, I'm on the other end. I'm more excited about the product and marketing side of this business. But alas I know no coders so I had to learn all this coding shit myself.

I'm also on the look out for a technical partner and will actively start looking once I have my prototype working.

What I plan to do though is meet them in person or via webcam first. Shoot the shit, observe how they handle different situations, get a feel for their morals, talk about normal stuff friends talk about.

You want to know the real person you're going to share your business with, not what their CV says or what their marketing talk convey.

How would they handle conflict? How likely are they to use slight of hand tricks to better themselves at others expense? What do they want to accomplish and how would that tie in with your shared business? Do they simply want to make a quick buck? Do you?

Hi, sorry for the stupid question here but I'm a tech newby. But why would you want to encrypt php? I thought only the hosting server can view the actual code. Is it possible to view php scripts that are not executed through a browser?
I do taijiquan too. It can be brutal if you train it like the yang family did. Low stances, excruciating chin na, jing punches to gut.

Its sad that it sort of evolved into this slow dance. Read up a bit about how Yang Luchan and his sons used to train. They didn't get the nick name "Yang the invincible" for doing ballet.

Re:Founders who can't code on Thursday October 14, 2010 @06:10AM (#1790416)
I don't know any developers so I have to learn to code myself. I also have not business related experience so that's a double whammy. But I can generate good ideas like a mofo.

While building my prototype I mostly feel like I have no idea what I'm doing but slowly and surely my site's starting to function, grow and work. Its amazing what persistence can accomplish.

I realize I'll have to find a technical co-founder eventually though. I won't be able to hack together a smoothly running and awesome site on my own. I also have no idea where to look for a technical co-founder and how to approach them. Interesting times ahead.
