The fourth option is to pay more.
Re:JavaScript = C + Lisp on Friday July 18, 2008 @03:47PM (#250137)
More like SyntaxOf(C) + subset(Lisp)
Re:Python best practices on Thursday July 10, 2008 @05:58AM (#242236)
I read a study that showed that 2,3, or 4-space indents were equivalent for readability. Therefore, I always use 2.
Re:New malloc in OpenBSD helps spot 33 year old bug in yacc on Wednesday July 09, 2008 @04:36PM (#241630)
I think lots of people run Antlr these days. http://www.antlr.org/
Re:Neil Young’s answer to iTunes on Thursday July 03, 2008 @02:48AM (#234973)
I am rather bothered by a lot of the comments here. Have any of you actually talked with Neil about these issues? I have. He's an extremely passionate promoter of high-quality sound. I truly feel sorry for those who cannot tell the difference between 192kbps MP3s and CDs. I can always hear the difference with my headphones and eq settings. But Neil is not satisfied with CD-quality; he wants higher quality than that. At the time I chatted with him (several years ago now) he was leaning toward 24-bit 192K samples/second, as I recall. This was before Blu-Ray.

Since the original article was so vague, and we don't have a particular product to critique, can we at least give Neil the benefit of the doubt? His heart is definitely in the right place (and, in case you're wondering, he's more than just a bit of a geek - he's a first-class geek! - And not too shabby a musician, either...)

Re:Interview With the Man Who Could Destroy Photography on Saturday June 28, 2008 @02:29AM (#230512)
I can think of half a dozen ways to defeat this, as any hacker could. Seems to me to be much ado about nothing.
Re:Never Before Seen Bill Gates Photos on Saturday June 21, 2008 @08:07PM (#223944)
I understand your point completely, and I agree. I, too, am an exceedingly awesome world-renowned hacker who has been unfairly treated here. PG doesn't really care, or he likes it this way, or he's too busy doing other things. We need to build a TRUE hacker's community, and this website isn't it.

Remember: the internet routes around damage.

Re:Ask YC: Voting and Karma (Call to action) on Sunday June 15, 2008 @09:10PM (#218312)
Actually:

Upvote = "I'd like to see more comments like this" || "I agree with this".

Downvote = "I'd like to see fewer comments like this" || "I disagree with this".

His reference to the First Amendment is clearly allegorical - is that not obvious?
Well, my version of Hacker News has no "down button". Is my browser broken?
Re:Obama: I will be the Democratic nominee on Wednesday June 04, 2008 @02:36AM (#208662)
how does one "mod down"? I see only and "up" button. Thanks.
Re:Vernor Vinge: Signs of the Singularity on Monday June 02, 2008 @01:40AM (#206481)
AI is, by definition, the set of problems that are not yet solvable by computers. Ergo, all AI is fantasy. Nevermind that AI has beaten the world chess champ, is used every day for pattern recognition, stock trading, and a myriad other uses.

Those who do not prepare for the coming Singularity are going to be blindsided by it when it arrives.

Re:Poll: Hacker News (Myers-Briggs) Personality Types on Sunday June 01, 2008 @05:16AM (#205777)
Yes, just like a horoscope!
Re:NASA - Phoenix has landed on Monday May 26, 2008 @02:48AM (#200041)
My first computer ran at 87 kHz (!) - an IBM 1401. I wrote a compiler for a Python-like language for it, as well as an Operating System.

You kids today are spoiled with multi-GHz machines.

Re:The Future Without IPv6 on Sunday May 25, 2008 @09:41PM (#199866)
The problem, of course, is if the "host" is actually a huge collection of machines that hide behind a single IP of a NAT.
Re:How to Make Common Lisp go Faster Than C on Wednesday May 21, 2008 @05:47AM (#195864)
We can hack around the scribd censorship. Everybody who aubmits a .pdf knows it will be converted into the useless scribd format. So, the original submitter needs to immediately post a comment that is the original .pdf link.

If HN scribd damage occurs on that link, then we will find other ways to route around that damage, for example, by using tinyurl.

Down with scribd!!!

Aren't you, then, the Poster Child for this article?
Re:Adobe releases Flash Player 10 beta on Thursday May 15, 2008 @05:22AM (#190368)
I cant' wait for Flash to be replaced by something fully open-source; HTML5?

Why?
Re:The Art of the Interpreter -- Steele and Sussman [pdf] on Monday April 28, 2008 @04:58AM (#175482)
Is this your opinion, or do you have evidence of this (for example, have you asked DK about this?)?
Re:The Art of the Interpreter -- Steele and Sussman [pdf] on Monday April 28, 2008 @04:55AM (#175480)
I use this: http://www.pdf995.com/

Lets me "print" a PDF to a file - and that's how I converted it to something I can save on my HD and read at my leisure when I'm not online, e.g. when I'm on a plane trip.

This "solution" would not be necessary, however, if scribd and ipaper would go away and never cause any more pain on this planet. I despise ipaper. What were they thinking?

Re:Lambda functions and closures added to C++ on Sunday April 27, 2008 @06:49PM (#175100)
They would be, of course, wrong. ;-)
Re:Ask YC: How did you escape the pressures of school? on Sunday April 27, 2008 @06:48PM (#175096)
I think you're depressed.

But, you're right: why should I care?

Re:Ask YC: How did you escape the pressures of school? on Sunday April 27, 2008 @04:43AM (#174776)
Also as an oldie, I'd say my productivity today is the highest it has ever been. How do I keep myself motivated? By constantly being a beginner. I do web programming, GUI programming, embedded systems, drivers, unix, mac, PC, bare metal, lisp, python, C, dozens of assembly languages, Verilog, hardware, analog, RF, antennas, etc.

In my opinion, you are just making excuses for why you are less productive than you should be; it's called rationalization. ;-)

My advice is to dive in to some area of s/w (or whatever) that you don't know at all (i.e. become a beginner) and see if that doesn't spark your excitement again. It does for me, over and over again!

Re:Ask YC: Has anyone switched from OS X to Ubuntu? on Sunday April 13, 2008 @04:51AM (#162315)
I don't understand why "focus on mouse" is any better than Windows' ALT-Tab (to rapidly switch between windows)? It will switch between the two most recently-used windows, or, if you hold ALT, it will let you switch among all windows.

The best way to do window focus, tho, is, I think, to have you machine's camera notice where you are looking, and automatically raise that window - iris tracking and window raising.

Re:Lambda functions and closures added to C++ on Sunday March 30, 2008 @06:39PM (#150469)
Thanks - very much. It is an honest question - if this is a "community", wouldn't you think community members would give me the benefit of the doubt? I have never seen C++ used in my entire career. I'm MIT 6-3A '76 - maybe I'm sheltered in only hanging out with excellent programmers.

(aside: the gutless wonders who downvoted my original question did not respond to me directly at [email protected] - I suppose those folks are having their teenage fun trying to destroy this community? I have a proposal: whenever any of the "anointed " members of this community downmod anybody, they should be <b>required</b> to provide to the original poster a) their EMAIL ADDRESS so that the poster could respond, and b) their REASON for their action. In addition, I believe that NOBODY should be allowed more downmodding than upmodding - that is, you have to have "upmod points" before you're allowed to downmod - even if you are a Chosen One in the Secret Handshake Society of the YC Cult.)

Re:Lambda functions and closures added to C++ on Sunday March 30, 2008 @08:00AM (#150046)
Would the person who down-modded me please drop me email to [email protected] and explain, in detail, WHY they did this? Presumably, the "in-crowd" who can downmod is telling me that, somehow, my question should NOT be on hacker news. Or something. I'm terribly perplexed. Thank you for your response (if, indeed, you are man enough to respond!)
Re:Lambda functions and closures added to C++ on Sunday March 30, 2008 @05:56AM (#150016)
Does anybody use C++ anymore? I use Python and, when doing embedded programming, C (and maybe a pinch of assembly).

I'm playing with Arc.

I suppose people who write Microsoft apps may still write C++ but most of them have moved to C#.

Re:Are Y Combinator startups less Ambitious? on Friday March 28, 2008 @04:53AM (#148426)
Thank you.

Why are people down-voting for asking a simple question? Is THAT what "25 karma" gives them?

This community seems to be getting a little too overcrowded with self-important downvoters. Sad, really. I used to like it here.

There is so incredibly much I could contribute here, but now I ask "why bother" if the community begins its inevitable slide (thanks, Tech Crunch!) into Diggland and Reddithood?
