Re:No more boot loader: Please use the kernel instead on Tuesday July 09, 2024 @06:01AM (#40914254)
I understand not wanting to. I have been compiling my own kernels since about 2008, I think. I have occasionally thought about switching to something else, but really it has only gotten better (faster) over time.

When I was young and spry, I used to compile them with every new minor revision. Now, it is just maybe a couple times per year. I think that cooling it on how often I do it has helped it not become annoying.

I agree, because I suspect that it would not be different from us in general (differences in details of course, which would be the interesting part)!

Brand safety. They just make it seem like safety for someone else, but it is brand safety.

What would any company as "the long term AI winner" look like? What would it mean to be the winner in this context?

> that doesn't mean we should try to replace every language with English

Where did I say that everyone should speak only English? I do not care what language people speak.

> Are you trying to make a point or..?

Why are you being unkind? Or hostile, or whatever this is?

I was asking a question. I understand that people think they will lose something if they speak a different language. My native language is not the same as any of my ancestors from just a few generations ago, and I want to know what difference it makes?

Re:Högertrafikomläggningen on Sunday June 09, 2024 @06:21AM (#40623391)
Yeah, I get what you are saying. I would never want to mandate any language. I think it is dumb when countries have official languages as opposed to e.g. operating languages.

I just think that people are more worried about the homogenization of language than they need to be. In fact, with how quickly culture is homogenizing around the world, I think that it is even possible that language differences outlast cultural differences over the medium term. Teenagers in a lot of the world I have been to in the past years dress/behave/express themselves ... not very differently.

Everywhere I go in the world, old shit is different, but modern shit is depressingly the same, or really similar anyway.

I am fluent in one language and speak three others passably, and have order-a-beer/ask-for-a-toilet/get-directions ability in a few others. It does not matter to me which language I use to communicate. Why should it? The one I am fluent in is not the language of any of my ancestors if I go back just a couple of generations. So what?

My children are natively fluent in two languages. Neither of their languages is a second language.

Which language should I tell them is their primary language?

This is where the D&D multiple axes (plural of axis, not plural of axe, though D&D has those as well) of alignment comes in handy. Evil can be orderly, systematic. An evil society could be well functioning, with evil law and evil order.
> Our approach involved a live-action shoot using different variables and customizations.

What does "live-action shoot" mean in this statement? Wouldn't this just be "still photography"? When I think of live action, I think of people or at least ... action?

Re:Codestral: Mistral's Code Model on Wednesday May 29, 2024 @02:34PM (#40515209)
I had a similar experience. I was trying to get GPT 4 to write some R/Stan code for a bit of bayesian modelling. It would get the model wrong, and then I would walk it through how to do it right, and by the end it would almost get it right, but on the next step, it would be like, oh, this is what you want, and the output was identical to the first wrong attempt, which would start the loop over again.
Re:Why Are Sloths So Slow? on Thursday May 23, 2024 @06:07AM (#40452759)
Earthy means someone with big ears. Or lots of ears, maybe.

I am a little surprised that ruth is spelled that way instead of like rueth, which seems more like how I would expect it to be said.

Re:What's the difference between a motor and an engine? on Thursday May 23, 2024 @05:58AM (#40452705)
Out of curiosity, what do you think your uncle would have said that the magazine Motor Trend (first published 1949 according to wikipedia) is about, or what types of vehicles use a motorway, or what the going concern of the Ford Motor Company is?

Or was it more one-directional, such that engines can be called motors but motors should not be called engines?

1. Fiduciary duty has a specific legal meaning that is not really applicable here.

2. Corporations are not responsible solely to their shareholders.

But also particularly in a lot of fields.

One problem in niche areas is that sometimes there are only so many people working on a particular problem and only so many different papers/authors to cite.

I feel like (anecdotally) I have been asked more regularly for the full 12 digit number in most systems in the past at least some number of years instead of the 10 digit number. I wonder if more systems are being designed from the start to require millennium and century? I have not been keeping track or anything. I just feel like I am more often required now to input YYYY rather than YY.
In honor of Dennett's death, if we go with the proposition that consciousness is illusory to begin with, then it is fine to ignore the also-illusory consciousness across the animal world as well.

I will go ahead and claim that it is not like anything to be a bat (iykyk; see the Nagel reference in TFA). And, frankly, questions of consciousness have become a bit boring to me, despite being the focus of my interest for decades now.

Questions of intelligence, communication, social organization, etc are interesting. But questions about a consciousness phenomenon that may or may not even be real and has literally no consensus about theory or fundamental meaning across many disciplines? Boring.

Get back to me when even a bare majority of philosophers and researchers can agree on a definition of consciousness.

Living in Europe, I would rather be in NATO than not. I do not know if the other NATO countries would come to my country's defense, but the important thing is that the opponents of NATO do not know if they would not.

I am not sure what NATO should be winning. We are not currently, formally at war, so to me that seems like winning enough. If NATO is not winning, then who is?

Re:Hardest Problem in Computer Science: Centering Things on Thursday April 18, 2024 @04:44AM (#40074184)
As great as it is, it still sucks because on my full-screen browser, the text spans the entire monitor width, which makes text hard(er) to read. But as soon as you start forcing narrower columns for better readability, you start to run into positioning and precision problems again.

Literally cannot win.

Re:Lessons after a Half-billion GPT Tokens on Saturday April 13, 2024 @07:20PM (#40027110)
> get it to say when it's not sure

This is a function of the language model itself. By the time you get to the output, the uncertainty that is inherent in the computation is lost to the prediction. It is like if you ask me to guess heads or tails, and I guess heads, I could have stated my uncertainty (e.g. Pr [H] = .5) before hand, but in my actual prediction of heads, and then the coin flip, that uncertainty is lost. It's the same with LLMs. The uncertainty in the computation is lost in the final prediction of the tokens, so unless the prediction itself is uncertainty (which it should rarely be based on the training corpus, I think), then you should not find an LLM output really ever to say it does not understand. But that is because it never understands, it just predicts.

How does your model account for the probability that cheaper competitors are simply bad actors who have not yet been caught?

In fact, without something like criminal penalties, why would the board encourage safer/legal business practices? Seems like they might equally say, well that was a good run now find us another dastardly product that can bring our prices back down to our competitors.

Super cool. I wish I could switch it to my local language. I see that there are a few alternative language wikis available. Unfortunately the English wiki does not have many points of interest outside of quite famous ones. I did not check the others, but I don't expect them to be any better than English for my country.

Best thing is that it works in real time. No need to futz with fancy formulas. Just wait long enough and bam you're in the future.

Are current watches good? I genuinely don't know and am interested. I hadn't gotten one because I was an early iPhone adopter (Gen 1), but haven't been willing to be an early adopter since then. But I would like a watch, if they are good now.

I can get SMS "security" codes from most services to my google voice number, but one of my banks just flat out refuses, and let me tell you it can be a huge pain in the ass if a few circumstances line up so that you cannot receive a "security" clear-text msg on your approved phone.

I was kind of kidding, but I was also kind of intrigued by the idea. My instinct is that it would work in a vacuum, but that is just a gut feeling. But I also could not think of why one could not.
Dinos need fat air? Because they were so big or?
