Re:Is the FBI dumb, evil, or just incompetent? on Saturday May 25, 2013 @11:29AM (#5767517)
What happens when the FBI becomes infected with people like Lerner who use their power to persecute political dissidents?
So does this mean the U.S. needs to issue more work visas?

OMWFL

Obey my will forever license. Copying or creating derivative works shall irrevocably enslave you to my will forever.

This a reference to the "Protocols."

Bill Gates is a goy so he can not be king of the internet. But Google would make a good king, so just bow down.
Re:Discover Meteor on Wednesday May 08, 2013 @08:00AM (#5673621)
Meteor is built on top of node.

'npm install async' becomes 'mrt add meteor-async' ...

Sometimes you have to do a little configuration work to get off the shelf NPM packages settled nicely with Fibers; but its not a huge deal and almost every day someone else will turn npm-somePackage into meteor-somePackage.

Re:Rethinking J-school on Sunday April 28, 2013 @12:15PM (#5621704)
I dueled law-math in grad school. It made me weird; but I also gained a perspective very few have. You might find your self as being the only person who notices something cool; but its pointless to tell anyone because they won't be able to see it. Which can be frustrating. On the other hand; being that journalism is about communication; maybe you will be able to communicate interesting computer science type things to people who would otherwise not be able to get it.
Tell Congress to eliminate the incentives for Examiners to issue quotas of patents.
Krugman's error is to label the the bitcoin open network 'antisocial' in comparison to the federal reserve closed network. If antisocial means 'not wanting the company of others' : I think that means a closed network not an open network; the exact opposite of what he postulates.
Re:Abolish The Patent, Vanquish The Troll on Friday April 12, 2013 @01:17PM (#5539792)
I've worked as a patent prosecutor for a top ranked patent prosecution firm; and I know first hand that most patents are 'pencil patents' worthless subtle distinctions that are allowed because 'obvious' arguments do not stand up.

However, some innovations, maybe 1 in 1000, are really worthy. And if the inventor did not have some way to protect their research - google or microsoft or anyone else could usurp the idea from the average joe who spent a lot of research and effort to resolve the invention. just my 2 cents.

Any thoughts of putting some Erlang in there?
Re:How would you responsibly disclose proof that p=np? on Sunday March 10, 2013 @11:49PM (#5354802)
Don't tell anyone but very carefully selected disciples.
Unless the idea is novel and non-obvious and sufficiently detailed for a person of ordinary skill in the art to make and use it; or you have signed some sort of agreement. You can do what you want.
Corruption, plain and simple. The high price lawyers have to grease the wheels to ensure the win.
Re:Ask HN: Unpaid Internship Options on Wednesday January 23, 2013 @05:14PM (#5105638)
If you don't need ca$h there are plenty of opportunities for equity. Get one or the other, maybe a mix of the two.
I'm investing time into Meteor because I think it has a smart model for concurrent user updates.

Somebody has to figure out the name of the thief and post it!
Re:Rant: Backbone, Angular, Meteor, Derby on Saturday January 05, 2013 @12:41AM (#5011773)
Is it not a rule that a novel application will break the paradigm that other applications follow and hence leak out of the abstractions that allow the traditional application to be written quickly?

Copying is dramatically faster than doing something new.

I'm working on a project with ideas expressed at YSenate.org

We are trying to tackle exactly this type of problem in an open source way.

The big problem with open politics is the entropy of 'too many people talking at the same time.' To reduce the entropy the approach is to break the group into pieces and then put them back together. The fundamental postulate of YSenate.org is derived from Huffman Coding with the additional criterion that each individual is given equal weight. This results in a binary tree political organization.

We are also looking to integrate Git for legislative drafting and primary color votes to address the "Curse of Dimensionality."

Re:Provisional patents worth the time/money? on Monday December 10, 2012 @09:48PM (#4902800)
Patents are a crap shoot. I don't think you will get much scope on this invention, which is closer to 'design patent' than utility patent. Without scope you won't be able to tag someone as infringing; in theory. Of course you can play the troll and cause people trouble even when your patent is crap, i.e. you did not move the state of the art.

If you really do improve the lot of humanity with a new idea that solves a problem, you deserve a patent.

If you are doing something which is an obvious solution to a person of the art, you are wasting everyones time and energy.

Re:Jewish Problems on Friday November 09, 2012 @07:44PM (#4765457)
If you've been subject to the discrimination it probably feels the same. public/private whatever you call them, they are all just groups of people, and exclusionary judgment based on a couple generations of dna, well I think THAT should be reserved for haShem only. Live by the sword die by the sword, reciprocity, lex talionis, karma, ... almost always catches up.
Re:Jewish Problems on Friday November 09, 2012 @05:04AM (#4762102)
Jews invented racial discrimination. Let a gentile apply to a Jewish school, even if his father is Jewish and he practices Judaism they will turn him down if his mother is not ethnically Jewish.
Re:Ask HN: RoR or Node.js or Go on Tuesday October 23, 2012 @02:23PM (#4689441)
Node.js is the middle road between RoR and Go. RoR is the establishment, Go the frontier. The Node middle road provides the best trade off between community infrastructure and advanced design. Thinking in async is an acquired habit which will be frustrating at first, but fine after a while.
