I don't know man... join groups related to your interests IRL, meet people, and you'll see that for a lot of groups, internet can be summarized as "whatsapp to plan the next gatherings". Things do happen offline
Re:Show HN: Indigene – native plants for where you stand on Thursday October 15, 2026 @12:26PM (#50106051)
It works well in the sense that it suggested to plant all the wild plants that I see daily in the woods and nature around me.. on the other hand I guess I could have come to that conclusion myself :D .
I have access to Bortle 3 with a 20 minute drive... Printing an adapter right now :)
For more context, the other comment saying "I’m really impressed… guided me almost dead on to the double cluster when asked." is a bit funny, because the double cluster is easily seen naked-eye in suburban sky, which is as easy as it gets for deep sky objects. But the comment you quoted makes the app look good and I'm going to try it if the fall cloud cover ever goes away.
They mean that the FOV seen by the phone through an eyepiece is too small to run a successful plate solve.

The comment of the user says "the plate solve was precise enough that the object I wanted was centered (for the observer, not for the phone) when I used a 5mm eyepiece" (which is usually an high-power, meaning tiny-FOV eyepiece)

Most pointing methods aren't accurate enough to correctly center an object at high power and require you to use a lower power eyepiece, nudge the object a bit, then switch to high power. I understand how you read it as slop but the two sentences aren't contradictory, and the user comment hints to an useful pointing tool :)

Edit : bad tenses and grammar fixes

Hey, I'd actually use that. I build telescopes (see personal site in profile) and only do visual astronomy. I voluntarily prefer to use old-ish phones, i.e. currently I am using an iPhone SE 2022. Do you think the weak signal under the night sky would work with your plate solving ?

Gym rat + desk job hints at passable cardiovascular health though. An overall healthy body in the modern age is very tough* and time-consuming when you consider all aspects..

*Edit : though/tough, not native

I appreciated reading the Barrois territoire quoted :)
Re:People Hooked on Vapes Try a New Way to Quit: Cigarettes on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @12:55AM (#49811804)
I am very prone to (mostly digital) addictions, but on nicotine, despite having been smoking 7 years, I’ve quit cold turkey without trouble, and since then, I can absolutely just borrow one to a friend, maybe 2 or 3 times per year, without any withdrawal symptoms. It does not have any effect. I don’t understand anything about that :|
Re:Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026) on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @12:31AM (#49707732)
I do this in my running club (granted, it’s quite specific). Hello I’ll run X time at Y place for that long / that purpose. I don’t even explicitly « invite ». Then a few people sometimes join. We are a few hundreds so I meet new people each time. It’s nice and bears 0 organizational cost for me
Low-ish (4 to 6mm) but not really advertised.

The third volume of « Three body problem » and its fan-written and author-approved sequel deal with those local physical constants changes !

Whoops. I'm truly sorry for this one indeed, I will revert it. I bought actual font licenses but did not choose an italic yet, and replaced it with underlines, but this of course conflicts with my links..
Re:Ending my elixir exploratory writing on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @11:25AM (#49537723)
I am neutral about having maybe contributed to the weights. What would be misguided in my opinion would be to force myself to continue writing those (partly pointless, I agree) little programming explorations without the pleasure of doing so. So much efficiency and siloing of individuals has been created in programming in recent times that I doubt the point.

But to me there's a strong difference between programming and non-programming things re: AI. I don't feel the same way about any other subject to write about.

It's not about wanting to keep things for myself in an ownership sense.

Re:Ending my elixir exploratory writing on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @10:59AM (#49537345)
I agree that we need more human writing. I will simply stop in-public exploratory programming for the time being.

Hey, post author here, just to say that I've appreciated your presence on the forum a lot since I started using Elixir. You are one of those who brought a warm tone there :)
Re:Ending my elixir exploratory writing on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @10:29AM (#49536839)
Well (post author here), being solo and thus sometimes feeling pressured for "relevance" since relevance is tied to livelihood, I understand that some people facing this weird era can go that far.

I even feel my own writing has changed after reading claude-speak for a dozen months now.

If those people never "come back", yes, I'll have a more permanent opinion on them

Re:Ending my elixir exploratory writing on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @10:26AM (#49536780)
Oh, wow. I did absolutely not expect to end up on the front page with this one as it was a lot more personal than the rest of my posts... well, now I'm here and will be happy to chat

Edit, for the person whose comment is marked dead under mine and thus I cannot answer to : I was already very wary of publishing packages, because all abandoned packages start with a good intention. Now I will only publish something I depend on and use, and only if it has lived for a few months to years.

Thanks, that was so simple ! Just contributed my first missing path.
Hey, a simple question : I would like to contribute not features nor POIs but actual paths. In my region the maps lack a lot of forest paths, and others that are on the map are long gone due to nature closing them. Something like the strava heatmap is a lot more accurate because hikers and trail runners make the actual paths appear. I often use https://onthegomap.com (which uses OSM) to plan routes and find that the hiking paths do not match reality. What is a straightforward way for me to contribute ? I have GPX traces of all those not-on-maps well-trodden paths if that helps.
This kind of nuance is very suited to a mother tongue and I would probably like it in French, but as a non-native speaker who uses english mainly for professional or hobby stuff, claude-speak is becoming a bit off-putting.

My only exposure to english literature comes from the Brontë sisters at this moment in time.

Thanks. This is the first time I encounter the word "beachhead", and googling a bit made me indeed saw something related to an invasion. But I was so annoyed by the claudeisms that I closed the tab and just asked it to rephrase instead of trying to make another step towards its vocabulary.
I've had "tractable beachhead" a bit earlier today. Like in "the tractable beachhead was the coupling between X and Y".

A bit of googling did not help me, I have no idea what this is even supposed to mean.

Re:Cagire: Live Coding in Forth on Sunday July 19, 2026 @04:22PM (#48971395)
Very cool. Are you near Aspet ? I often hike with a friend who lives there. The Cagire is one of my favorite peaks of the Pyrénées.
Sadly not as I exclusively practice visual astronomy.

Here is a nebula, NGC7000, drawn by an excellent observer, which appears that way (very wide field, but a bit dimmer than their drawing) :

http://www.astrosurf.com/magnitude78/serge/images/NGC7000_10...

My advantage despite the low diameter is the ability to frame such huge objects !

Thanks for the clarification. I don't think so, my largest eyepiece has a field stop of 39mm, and I'm taking advantage of the fact that edge illumination falloff is not perceptible in visual astronomy when the f/D ratio is low.
I'm sorry, I did not find what you meant by a 220 format frame. Is it a film photography type ?
Very nice, are you documenting this somewhere ?
We still do it ! But the designs have evolved, see : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWhxCwHVPms

I'm planning this kind of build for my 16". It's still a dob, still uses teflon against formica and a wood structure, but the ability to move it easily indeed became a desirable feature.
