Your website is pretty much blank. Only words on the home page are about, login, and Elyxel. Also this post didn't explain what your project is. The about page contains a vague one sentence description.

You need to explain what problem you are fixing and how your product fixes it if you want to get any traction. People aren't going to signup if they don't know what they are signing up for.

I think you need to make it easier for people to get started. I almost didn't signup because I had to create an account before I could view any of the photos for sale. It would have been much easier to jump in if I could have just started browsing photos. Make make me signup after I have gone through a few pages of pictures.

The real kicker was when you asked for my credit card right away. I am a big fan of credit card up front on subscription services with a free trail. But I just wanted to see the product. There ins't anything for me to be excited about yet. Luckily I noticed that I could just click something in the menu to skip this step. I would put of asking for the card until you they go to make a purchase. You have my email address so you can already follow up if I abort at the CC step later.

It's almost certainly playing out of an opening book.

There is a move history, but you have to expand it.

Show HN: If something happens to you, what happens to your business?

I'm a bootstrapper and just went full time in May. Since then my wife has been worried that something might happen to me and she wouldn't know what to do with the business. She wouldn't want to take over running it, but she'd like to make sure my customers get taken care of, that the business keeps it value, and that there is a smooth transition to the new owner. No. I'll have to consider that.

Yes. These are great. By far the best I have used. Better than many that are way more expensive.
Re:Show HN: Free Survey Creator on Monday August 04, 2014 @01:33PM (#8132957)
Using important is only going to fix the problem if you have defined a style for that element. For example, if you have not defined a border then the client will still be able to add one.

Most sites use iframe for embeded widgets for this reason.

I think Stripe's checkout doesn't use iframe. They just define every single style with very specific rules. From what I remember.

Re:How I Got Pre-Signups for my SaaS, then Failed on Thursday July 24, 2014 @06:21PM (#8082676)
He didn't find customers. He found 2K looky-loos. Customers are people who are paying for the product (or meet some activity threshold in a free product). He found 2K people who were willing to give their email address to learn more about what was being offered.

That is a positive sign, but they aren't customers. It seems like 2,00 people logged in and then found out the product wasn't what they were expecting.

I know this was the case for me. I signed up hoping for a really nice online IDE. I found a bunch of ssh stuff that made no sense to me.

It might be worth talking to the 2000 people and finding out why they signed up and what type of product they were hoping to find.

I run BromBone.com. We have several customers using it to make static versions of their AJAX sites for Google Adsense purposes.

Email me at [email protected] if you want to talk details.

Re:Ask HN: How to stop working until daybreak? on Wednesday April 02, 2014 @03:03PM (#7518121)
Decide what time you want to wake up. And then get up at that time no matter what. After a few days your bed time will work itself out.

Steve Pavlina was the first place I heard of this method. http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2005/05/how-to-become-an-ea...

I see. Sorry. I saw your release year and thought about name conflicts, but still missed it.

Actually, my first thought was that Melancholia might have been 450 minutes long. Because it felt that long when I watched it.

Re:IMDB Top 100K Movies – Analysis in Depth, Part 1 on Sunday February 16, 2014 @09:37PM (#7250327)
Melancholia is not 450 minutes long.

If I have a bucket with 2 million key, it takes a long time and 2000 requests to get the dir listing. With mimicdb it would only be one fast request.
Re:How to Save 90% on your S3 Bill on Wednesday February 05, 2014 @02:30PM (#7186167)
Is their a SaaS version of mimicdb? I'm ready to signup right now.

I didn't expect to see Sean Ross' excellent Haggis design diary on your list. But you are right, it is a great read.

This method follows Google's own guidelines on Making AJAX website crawable.

https://developers.google.com/webmasters/ajax-crawling/

http://www.brombone.com

It's a service that solves SEO for javascript driven websites.

For the most part, Google can't crawl sites that manipulate the DOM using javascript (AngularJS, Backbone.js, Ember.js, etc). The solution is to use a headless browser to make html snapshots for all your pages and serve those to Google instead of the page that requires javascript.

This turns out to be a bit of a pain in practice. So, BromBone does it for you. It generates, hosts, and updates the html snapshots. When Googlebot visits your site, you proxy the snapshot from BromBone and serve it to Google. Now Google can see the same thing your users see.

Couldn't you say the same thing about any unit of measure? "Less miles" (Queue LSU Football joke.)
Re:Javascript apps can be fully crawlable on Monday October 07, 2013 @02:55PM (#6510373)
I run http://www.brombone.com. We provide prerendered snapshots as a service.

You can get it faster than 15 seconds, but you can't really get it fast enough. We precache everything. I would strongly recommend against trying to process the pages in realtime.

Re:Progressive Enhancement Is Dead on Tuesday September 03, 2013 @11:18AM (#6321420)
Certainly cool that Google is working on this. I suspect someday it will all work perfectly.

However, from working with customers of BromBone, I know this. People have javascript powered webpages that were not getting indexed by Google. Google would crawl the page, and see no content. The pages were not in Google. After creating prerendered snapshots and serving them when the _escaped_fragment_ parameter was present, the pages showed up in Google.

Re:Progressive Enhancement Is Dead on Monday September 02, 2013 @06:36PM (#6317585)
_escaped_fragment_ is a bit of a hack, but it also provide enormous benefit. It allows you to gain all the benefits this article is talking about (which I won't repeat here) and still make you site crawlable without duplicating code.

You are right about one thing, it is a pain to setup. Much harder than it sounds at first. After doing it a few times, I finally got sick of it and built http://www.BromBone.com. It's a service that takes generates the html snapshots for site owners and keeps them up to date. I hope it will let site owner keep all the positives and eliminate most of the new negatives.

Re:Progressive Enhancement Is Dead on Monday September 02, 2013 @06:30PM (#6317547)
Has it really? Do you have an example?

I've never seen an example where Google crawled a page and included content that was loaded via ajax or an external javascript file. I have seen Google index content that is loaded from a script tag included in the html page.

As AaronO said, you'll want to generate snapshot of all your pages. Normally this is done with PhantomJS and some helper scripts.

Google has documented this method here: https://developers.google.com/webmasters/ajax-crawling/

I have made a service that takes care of this for javascript sites that don't want to mess with maintaining this system themself. http://www.BromBone.com

Re:Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (September 2013) on Sunday September 01, 2013 @10:18AM (#6310446)
SEEKING FREELANCER - remote

Heroku, Firebase, NodeJS, javascript

Create a Heroku add-on created for our SaaS.

BromBone (http://www.brombone.com) is a service that makes client-side javascript driven websites (AngularJS, Ember.js, Backbone.js, etc) crawlable by Google. We process all the websites pages with PhantomJS and save the result. When Google crawls the page, the website just has to proxy the snapshot from our server and send the file to Google-bot.

We need to create a Heroku add-on so that people can signup for BromBone form within Heroku. This process is well documented by Heroku.

Currently BromBone does have any login/auth system for users. The project would also involve creating that system. Probably using Firebase's Auth system, although this is still up for discussion.

Willing to work with someone working nights and weekends, or with someone who wants to knock it out quicker working full days. Would prefer to per project or milestone payments rather than hourly.

The ideal candidate is someone who has previously created a Heroku add-on and/or used Firebase's Auth system. However, that is not a requirement.

YouTube would be a better site if they just removed the feature. Let it spill somewhere else. Why should I have to read comments like that on a video that has done nothing to invite them?
Re:Marissa Mayer teaching at Stanford University on Saturday August 24, 2013 @11:40PM (#6270810)
Honest question. Why does the comment feature on YouTube still exist?
Re:How to build a large Angular.js application on Friday August 16, 2013 @10:21AM (#6224127)
I made http://www.BromBone.com to help with the googlebot problem.

I agree. The learning curve can be steep, but I've really enjoyed using Angular.
