Re:Nvidia's Risky Business on Tuesday August 11, 2026 @08:40PM (#49266436)
One of the rarely-mentioned value adds Nvidia provides is nccl[1] which makes multi-node networking and topology essentially plug and play. The other players have since caught on [2][3] and are working hard to catch up but I'd say networking is a real moat.

Re:The Humane AI Pin Launches Its Campaign to Replace Phones on Thursday November 09, 2023 @12:52PM (#38208295)
I’m a Humane employee who has worked on nearly all the Ai features in the product. We’re very happy to get this out into the world and start getting feedback!
Re:Ask HN: Who Got Hired? on Friday June 02, 2023 @12:30AM (#36161082)
I used to post every month for my previous company. The candidates we would get were always junior and low quality: this was likely due to our description and target market. I don’t recall hiring from one of those posts. We did however hire quite a few terrific engineers from workatastartup.
Re:Vimium – The Hacker's Browser on Tuesday February 28, 2023 @12:13AM (#34965885)
I distinctly remember when I first got on-boarded to Superhuman their app detected Vimium running and asked me to disable it for their site.
Re:Sam Bankman-Fried’s Crypto Empire Collapsed on Monday November 14, 2022 @06:13PM (#33602752)
> He has also found other ways to occupy his time in recent days, playing the video game Storybook Brawl, though less than he usually does, he said. “It helps me unwind a bit,” he said. “It clears my mind.”

> Shortly before the interview, Mr. Bankman-Fried had posted a cryptic tweet: the word “What.” Then he had tweeted the letter H. Asked to explain, Mr. Bankman-Fried said he planned to post the letter A and then the letter P. “It’s going to be more than one word,” he said. “I’m making it up as I go.”

> So he was planning a series of cryptic tweets? “Something like that.”

> But why? “I don’t know,” he said. “I’m improvising. I think it’s time.”

I’m in disbelief that he not only gave an interview but that he told the interviewer this.

Re:New(ish) command line tools on Tuesday April 12, 2022 @08:59PM (#31010046)
Yes, because it’s underpinned by SSH it’s secure.

The authors consider it feature complete hence the lack of updates.

It sold ~3 weeks ago for ~3M.
For an insurance company, who'll burden the cost, they're the same problem. Different cause, but same problem.
Back when I worked at $HEALTHCARE_INUSRANCE_CO we were trying to solve this (more general problem) from the other side. We regularly saw routine calls for what could only be described as "loneliness". Our research lead us to find that a high percentage of elderly folks (50+) identified as lonely regardless of their living situation. [1]

Looking deeper into claims data, we found a high percentage of these calls were in rural communities. These inessential emergency calls often lead to resources being expended without need. For example: the singular community ambulance being dispatched to the caller's home only because they wanted to chat. Even when considering the dispatcher filtering out these callers, and the emergency personnel doing their best to leave as quickly as possible, it still places a strain on the system. Tying up emergency personnel with mundane tasks creates a far greater risk for the community if & when they're needed.

We unfortunately found no solution to this problem. It ran deeper than just alleviating non-emergency emergency-response claims: it was due to the loneliness epidemic, and the company was uncomfortable shouldering the financial and legal cost of trying to create a solution.

Memora Health (https://memorahealth.com) | San Francisco, CA | REMOTE OK | Senior Engineer, Senior Infrastructure Engineer, Senior Frontend Engineer, Data Scientist

Memora Health (YC W18) is building an operating system for care delivery that implements intelligent workflows to streamline care delivery and revolutionizes the patient experience outside the care setting. We offer an end-to-end platform that unifies fragmented health care data to enable providers, payors, and life science companies to automate care delivery operations: from patient communication to documentation to reimbursement. We uniquely use artificial intelligence to digitize existing care delivery workflows, giving clinicians infrastructure that learns from every encounter they have.

We care more about the outcome and usage of our product than the technology that accomplishes it, and we're looking for like-minded engineers; we build software that powers interactions like these: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMcpXO_naPY

Our stack:

- React/Redux

- NodeJS - JavaScript (ES6) / TypeScript

- MongoDB

- Python 3 / Flask / NLTK

- Docker + Kubernetes (on GCP)

We are backed by Andreessen Horowitz, SV Angel, Kevin Durant, Martin Ventures, and several strategic health care groups. We pay market rate and offer competitive benefits + equity; VISA sponsorship is possible. If any of this interests you, get in contact with me (cooper [at] memorahealth [dot] com) and use [HN] in the subject line.

Is it just me or is there no way to import prior `.paw` files to the new UI? I've looked in both the web and Linux version (both the same) to no avail.

Re:Jack Ma's Ant Group set for record $34B market debut on Tuesday October 27, 2020 @05:11PM (#24911954)
I worked at Ali and have seen 马云 speak in person. I get that it seems a bit weird because he's _not_ technical, nor particularly enlightened in any area, but the success of the company is in part due to his excellence as a manager. It's part of the reason Ali wasn't, until very recently, in gaming because he wanted to focus the company and to abide by a certain set of principles.

To your second point: doing business in China is partially owed to the niche that the government carves for you. Look at the debacle of Ofo vs Mobike. You need to grow at all costs until you can overtake competition then you're protected.

Re:Jack Ma's Ant Group set for record $34B market debut on Tuesday October 27, 2020 @04:52PM (#24911736)
1) Jack Ma is neither the CEO nor the majority shareholder in Ant. [1]

2) Jack is one of > 91.2M party members in China. As are most high-ranking managers and professionals, it's simply a fact of life. [2]

Nothing about 1 or 2 makes Alibaba Group or Ant a state owned enterprise (SOE) more than any other company in China. Everything in the world need _not_ be late stage capitalist democracy. There are plenty of ways to attain success and happiness. Lastly, Ant isn't even IPOing in the West. If you disagree then vote with your wallet (or don't).

Re:Ask HN: What is a better approach to interviewing? on Sunday September 13, 2020 @03:35PM (#24463319)
None of the code that we use for this is too difficult. To date we've only hired for generalist engineers, and are not using some obtuse algorithm example. It's things you'll need to do in a day-to-day like filtering logging outputs, checking HTTP response codes, throwing errors, etc. We want to see how a candidate preforms on an example like this rather than writing something from scratch.

Of course there's Q&A and their reasoning/explanation is just as valuable as the code they right. This is just the technical portion of the interview. However, I think we've really hit the sweet spot with this approach.

Re:Ask HN: What is a better approach to interviewing? on Sunday September 13, 2020 @03:11AM (#24459022)
I'll share what we've transitioned to recently: a testing focused interview!

We provide a candidate a piece of production code with some slight tweaks made that will break it in (common) edge cases. Further, we give a test harness that already supplies some basic tests for which it will work. What we're looking for is to see if the candidate can grok the provided code (< 30 lines for a 2hr interview) and reason through ways it could break. Writing the tests insures that the candidate can _actually_ write the code and shows any areas they might be less focused on or miss.

Compared to our old procedure of writing the (provided) code snippet this has been a far more successful approach. In 2 hours I learn more about an applicant than through the entirety of the previous process. An added benefit: this workflow is representative of real work - you'll need to track down code you likely didn't write and implement new functionality, or fix something that's broken. Doing this in an interview is a near direct translation to the job (minus understanding the whole codebase).

I'd strongly recommend this unit testing based process and it can definitely be tweaked to fit your own scenario!

Re:Patreon Raises $90M Series E at $1.2B Valuation on Tuesday September 01, 2020 @11:30PM (#24349732)
I use Patreon (albeit in a pledge capacity) sparingly. Many years ago they dropped Naomi Wu[1][2][3]. This situation was particularly scary: she was making a decent chunk of her living through Patreon pledges, but because of the limited size of her audience, and marginalized position she had no recourse.

While I agree that they're not currently cancerous I do think they illustrate part of the broader problem with modern society: over-dependence on central infrastructure-like sources that are private and can change on a whim. It's great that people can make a living on Patreon, but this should be tempered by the inherent risk of being on a platform you don't control.
