Yeah, really disappointing that they are so slow here, compared to open source maintainers and volunteers.
My phone is from December 2023, so 28 months and is at 842 cycles (and 85% max capacity). So, about 33 months at this rate.

I mean, massive weirdo, and maybe not Magnus... but he didn't invent Fischer Random Chess because chess was too hard for him. He dominated for several years, right? The game wasn't as advanced or computer prep dominated as it is now, but he seems like he was arguing from a very similar position and mindset as Magnus.
Re:Chat Control Must Be Stopped – Now on Tuesday June 18, 2024 @10:08AM (#40718059)
I mean, if you asked many people "is it ok if the government can read some of your chat messages in exchange for catching a bunch of child pornographers," this will be a very popular "yes" vote. People are generally very willing to trade some rights and freedoms for safety. Or don't realize the trade-off they're making.
Re:Show HN: Heynote – A Dedicated Scratchpad for Developers on Saturday December 23, 2023 @09:23AM (#38744403)
I love this. I currently use an app like this. Ctrl-: opens and closes. But it is just one big blob and the Cmd-a thing gets me as well. Looking forward to giving this a go.

If you use chrome and only chrome.
Re:AirPods Suck in Video Conferences on Thursday August 04, 2022 @08:27PM (#32350066)
I'll be honest, after several years, I've never noticed this. I probably have google meets, slack huddles, and phone calls with people for 2-4 hours a day, and most are using AirPods and nobody is asking anybody to repeat things. (Except when they weren't actually paying attention.)

I also record those mini slack screencasts with them all the time and have no problem understanding on review.

I know I personally am a loud talker, so maybe that helps. I've also upgraded to airpod pros, but did a year of remote without and many coworkers don't have them.

But, one coworker slowly turns into a robot when using his AirPods. Maybe it's about how much interference is in the area? But he's defaulted to using his laptop mic and AirPods to listen.

The OP later clarified that it wasn't a normal transaction. They sold a "cheap company van" using their stripe business account. That seems like a huge liability, since a used car seems extremely likely to cause a chargeback. I don't think dealerships would accept a credit card payment (other than deposit) for this reason.

Re:My Steam Game Revenue Stats on Saturday July 24, 2021 @08:25AM (#27940301)
Honestly, those make me want to buy it. Refreshing honest. I don't think the market here is people that'll be put off by that.
Re:Tauri: An Electron alternative written in Rust on Saturday February 20, 2021 @10:04AM (#26204587)
Honestly, this site is the only place I really hear about the supposed horror of electron. The resource issue doesn't seem to effect me or people in the 7 slacks I'm in all day.

My 6 year old MacBook runs slack, Xcode, android studio, safari, chrome, messages, vs code, vim, iterm2, preview, battle.net and hearthstone all the time without issue, really.

I think for the average user, they'd rather have more features across platforms more quickly than a smaller resident memory footprint and install size.

Re:iOS 14 is available today on Thursday September 17, 2020 @07:53AM (#24503489)
In iOS 13, they added the ability for apps to provide parts of this service. I've been using Hiya and very happy with the spam call blocking.

Re:Microsoft announces Lists, a new Airtable-like app on Tuesday May 19, 2020 @08:18PM (#23241942)
I don't think they're in the same space. Trello is a list of todo lists. Whereas Airtable and lists are for data you'd put in a spreadsheet or database.
Heh. I use gnu screen daily. Saw this and immediate downloaded it (I missed screenhero so much) and got coworkers to use it with me, and never considered the name collision. I'm surprised by the number of comments about it.
Being a USian, I didn't even know this was a concept. And I remember googling how much to tip when I started travelling as an adult. I'm pretty sure all the advice was to consider leaving a tip for housekeeping if you make an unusual mess or get great service. Not that it was hella expected or the norm.
I can't imagine that the prison is going to scan an entire book mailed to a prisoner. Where can we read about that?
Huh, I expected much worse than “Earlier this year, Apple became the first company to publish the names of its cobalt suppliers, and Amnesty’s research shows it is currently the industry leader when it comes to responsible cobalt sourcing. Since 2016, Apple has actively engaged with Huayou Cobalt to identify and address child labour in its supply chain.”
Re:Replacing JQuery with Vue.js: No Build Step Necessary on Thursday February 15, 2018 @08:48AM (#16383921)
I understand that this is probably not the ideal way to use Vue.js, but I love the clear examples and the guide to baby steps into Vue.js. I've got a lot of legacy sites that I work on, where a full build system and conversion isn't tenable, but something as shown here, totaly is.
You don't have to expand the panel or 3d touch or anything.

I'll admit that this behavior is what I want 99% of the time, so it also doesn't bother me.

The 3rd or 4th paragraph discusses the strategy. (No hard details.)

Re:Paying to get rid of pagination on Slate.com? on Tuesday April 22, 2014 @10:43AM (#7627937)
Unlike the author, I'm really excited by this. Paying to remove ads (which this basically is) is one of my favorite business models as a consumer. Pandora and slashdot are two examples that come to mind.

I think this is an interesting move from a more mainstream outlet. It's miles ahead of my local newspaper and their stupid 5 articles a day paywall.

Also, the argument that nobody would make a product and then make it shittier for free customers seems silly. Companies do this all the time. All those pricing grids where feature X is in a higher tier, or nag screens, or limiting usage?

Re:Designing Medium: Crafting Link Underlines on Medium on Saturday March 22, 2014 @10:41AM (#7449214)
What I appreciated here was the attention payed to the performance aspects of the proposed changes, in addition to the aesthetics. I think designers and other related professionals often get a bad rap for ignoring these issues, but I've worked with quite a fee that are supremely mindful.

I know many aren't fans of the content (or sometimes the cover images), but I do think that medium looks beautiful and is very readable.

Re:How in-app purchases have destroyed the game industry on Saturday February 01, 2014 @12:14PM (#7162209)
Calling these games "the game industry" does a disservice to all the other games that aren't like this.
Re:How to make $800/mo from three lines of code on Saturday December 07, 2013 @02:34PM (#6867350)
I wonder if that makes you more conscious of them.

I'm thinking about a study cited in Thinking Fast, Thinking Slow[1] where the participants did better on a test when the questions where in a blurry font. I believe it was suggested that being forced to exert mental effort to read the questions forced their brain into "actual thinking mode" as opposed to "pattern recognition" mode.

ie. If we know it's probably not an ad, but it looks like an ad, is it a more effective bit of non-ad? (well, it is an ad, but it's an ad we want to see.)

I don't begrudge the rules here about titles, but I'm glad it was broken here, since that I clicked and read. Interesting stuff.

Makes me miss Perplex City.
