Re:The Centralized Internet Is Inevitable on Monday October 19, 2020 @06:28PM (#24831722)
Torrents seem to match your definition pretty well. And it's a quite successfull technology.
Re:Ask HN: Favorite teachers on YouTube? on Sunday September 16, 2018 @04:19PM (#18000870)
Not youtube, but I love Charles Isbell and Michael Littman's machine learning course on Udacity: https://in.udacity.com/course/machine-learning--ud262 They explain the topic in a very clear way, and are very funny
Re:Tell HN: Using Gmail? You will be force logged into Chrome on Saturday September 08, 2018 @05:41PM (#17942923)
That's not an option for everyone
Gasoline
Re:DuckDuckGo's bang on Friday August 31, 2018 @12:23PM (#17886813)
But you already can insert a bang at the end of the search string
Re:JupyterCon: I don't like Notebooks [slides] on Thursday August 30, 2018 @07:22PM (#17881697)
Yeah but it's less nice, and if you're running on a distant server you have to deal with X forwarding
Re:JupyterCon: I don't like Notebooks [slides] on Tuesday August 28, 2018 @10:08AM (#17858857)
If you work with image processing, notebooks are very handy as they can display images directly. Also to display tables nicely with pandas, or for any data visualization actually.
And '10 x'
Re:Introducing the Python Language Server on Friday July 20, 2018 @09:29AM (#17574787)
Not parent but for me two main reasons would be : free, lighter / faster.
Re:The state of type hints in Python on Thursday June 21, 2018 @03:56AM (#17363006)
you can type hint without comments

    a: int = 1
is valid python
Re:Optimization tricks in Python: lists and tuples on Thursday June 14, 2018 @09:44AM (#17311609)
Why do you have the fixed length requirement?

Regular lists seem to work perfectly for this

Re:We Shouldn’t Be Surprised at the Theranos Fraud on Thursday June 07, 2018 @09:08AM (#17255399)
The difference is that Jobs wasn't putting people's life in danger as theranos did by releasing malfunctionning blood testing machines
Self regulation, really?

Startups could never self regulate and never will. And a few bad startups can be enough to do massive damages.

Look Cambridge analytica: this startup alone made the case for regulations like GDPR.

As a user, I really am pleased with gdpr, so that "do-no-evil" startups stop selling my data around and not caring at all about my privacy.

Re:Why I'm leaving Linux on Thursday May 17, 2018 @04:35AM (#17089738)
I have a window sitting next to my Linux and I use it about twice a year, it's no maintenance at all (less than a VM I would say)
Re:Why I'm leaving Linux on Thursday May 17, 2018 @03:48AM (#17089563)
Then use a dual boot with Windows. It's quite simple to set up.

Linux is the best os for programming imo (especially if you develop software for Linux servers), so why not keep both?

Re:Why Entrepreneurship Programs for Engineers Fail on Friday May 11, 2018 @02:12AM (#17045279)
I don't believe this. It just depends on the motivation of the entrepreneur. I know entrepreneurs who created non-profit startups and work to improve public services, what do you say about this?

If your motivation is only money, I'm not sure you can go as far as when you have a true goal. Look at Elon musk, I'm sure he could have made money much more easily if he would have continued into banking services like PayPal.

Re:The Brotherhood of the Ad Blockers on Thursday May 10, 2018 @06:05PM (#17043351)
I think we are slowly gaining consciousness about the danger of ads. It's really pernicious but I think has overall terrible effects on people (self estime, food / alcohol consumption...). And not just ads, but also product placement in movies / TV shows.

I think it's terrible for our health and our minds.

Re:The Senate has forced a vote to restore net neutrality on Thursday May 10, 2018 @05:44PM (#17043236)
"my freedom ends where yours begins"
Re:The Senate has forced a vote to restore net neutrality on Thursday May 10, 2018 @05:12AM (#17037322)
What I said doesn't imply this at all. I'm just stating that there's a trade-off between the freedom of corporations and the freedom of the people (but different kind of freedoms, ofc)
Re:The Senate has forced a vote to restore net neutrality on Thursday May 10, 2018 @02:46AM (#17036888)
So we can summarize saying it's customers freedom against ISP freedom.
I think we're underestimating the global health issue due to online advertisement (alcohol, smoking, or just bad eating habits). And I'm not speaking of attention disorder of so-called 'multitask kids' caused by social media that have business models based on ads, and do everything to grab your attention
python in airflow is just used to define your graph and trigger your jobs. I think it's a wonderful language to do this.

You can (and should) program your batch jobs in other languages than python if you have large amount of data of course.

Can you explain a bit more how this works? I am not familiar at all with these challenges

50kB to 4kB is a 10x compression, it doesn't seem that huge, what's the achievement here?

Re:Who Are These Economists, Anyway? (2009) [pdf] on Monday May 07, 2018 @06:50AM (#17011712)

Re:Ask HN: What are your favorite terminal programs? on Monday May 07, 2018 @06:18AM (#17011601)
ncdu to analyze disk space and find huge folders you can clean

And `z` (the zsh plugin) to cd into your most common directories

Re:New autoplay policy in Chrome on Monday May 07, 2018 @06:10AM (#17011560)
that's why it's learning from your actions
Re:Who Are These Economists, Anyway? (2009) [pdf] on Monday May 07, 2018 @06:04AM (#17011524)
what's not nonsense is to view humans as rational beings, and the free market as the perfect system.

What it says is that economists should include more psychology and less mathematics in their theories.
