Re:Intel stock collapse worsens as $3.5T chip rout spreads on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @11:47AM (#50354360)
It was lack of certain REM that meant we couldn't manufacture the necessary elements of some parts of the F35's radar stack.
Re:Intel stock collapse worsens as $3.5T chip rout spreads on Monday November 02, 2026 @10:26PM (#50347666)
You're absolutely right! And that is why the last couple of years has been fascinating to watch from a geopolitical and trade standpoint.

Watching China push its weight around earlier in the year with REM and REE was crazy. The US, and the rest of the world for that matter, were brought to our knees. Germany's auto industry and weeks of chips left, the US started shipping F35's to allies _without_ radar. Truly astounding trade power to see.

Made it very clear to every nation that you must have a sovereign story to tell about chip manufacturing.

Intel is incredibly important for American sovereignty and that's why they are semi-nationalized. They are a Boeing now.

A country must feed itself, power itself, and in 2026 it must be able to manufacture its own chips (from ore, to refining, to the foundry).

Re:Git for US Legislation on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @03:19AM (#50270190)
Given that chicken scratch in the margins gets into bills that are voted upon, it seems unlikely that this would be accepted by Congress. Love it though.
Caught Muse on my partner's laptop last night copying everything on your clipboard btw. I'm sure those are fired back to HQ and that logic doesn't at least _attempt_ to ignore passwords.
A completely predictable outcome of being under regulated and having several disastrous outcomes.

Unfortunate, but that's the way the cookie crumbles.

Re:Whistle: Speech to Text in 16.9 MB on Friday October 09, 2026 @12:13PM (#50022665)
Yeah maybe I'll play around with different precision, I did see improvement when I went from fp4 to full fidelity though.

This is my setup for Home Assistant voice, parakeet for STT, GLM 5.3 to generate responses, and Kokoro for TTS. I use local routing for simple commands like turn on the lights, but if I want to ask questions or something, it gets routed to GLM 5.3. It is basically free, half a cent per turn maybe, so in a month I may spend a dollar? Not even usually.

Re:Whistle: Speech to Text in 16.9 MB on Friday October 09, 2026 @01:20AM (#50016291)
I found parakeet to be very good and pretty darn fast, ~20-50ms, accuracy around 9/10 whenever I've run tests. In practice the error rate is not too big of an issue because the output is fed into GLM 5.3 so it'll figure it out if it sees "heather" instead of "weather".

Much larger though, I think I went full precision and its around 2GB.

Re:How we made claude.ai 3x faster in two weeks on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @01:48AM (#49988774)
Is this not just how life|universe|etc works? It doesn't seem surprising to me that a crow will hack a reward system if you let it and an AI will do it as well. Many/most humans do it.

Seems like something more fundamental.

Re:Former German spy chief arrested for attempted treason on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @03:58PM (#49983264)
High key, maybe look at Gerhard Schröder for the same thing. His ceding of sovereignty over Germany's energy infrastructure and subsequent board seat at Gazprom is a flashing red siren.
Re:Gemini 4 Argon on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @09:12PM (#49916492)
It wasn't that they were out of the running for a few months, it was a year and a half.

That's too long to be so far behind. This release looks like it puts them back in it but if they don't ship anything again for a year plus it's hard to imagine building on top of them and watching the world go by.

As others note, this is most relevant for us here, Google does not need to chase YC developers and the like. They can move more slowly, they have the size to do that. But it does suggest a lot of dysfunction given they have the world at their fingertips and couldn't seem to ship anything for a year.

Yes, if they are an adversary, the company should have been dissolved and leaders and board in jail.

But this was a bad faith temper tantrum, plain to see for anybody looking.

Re:What even is an OS now? on Friday September 25, 2026 @09:33PM (#49852283)
Naw, you had the knack.
That article, and your quote, doesn't seem to support your pushback.

Of course, if a solar panel is broken, ground up and falls into a canal, it would put some heavy metals into the water.

The risk is basically zero and far lower than any other power generation source. It is a nonsense, bad faith "concern".

Sure do! But people die in a few days without potable water, crops are usually more drought resistant.

And yes, I do get the point that if you suggested we build $6B desalination plants to grow lettuce people would balk and say, "That's not worth the money!". We should use less water on crops.

No, this is a right wing talking point against solar that isn't based in fact.
And as of the writing of this comment, ~7pm, about 25% of CA's grid is supplied by batteries: https://www.caiso.com/todays-outlook/supply

I was shocked when I saw how much batteries contribute, honestly don't hear about them much but they have scaled a lot in recent years.

I would love to see the major cities in California start building desalinization plants.

Every plant built would give us a much needed buffer and in the good times could even let us refill ground water (we'd never do that, I know).

Even worse, once you're there, you toggle _on_ "Content & Privacy", and then what?

What does the toggle on for "Image creation" mean? Is that now restricted? Or is toggle off mean it is restricted?

Re:Can we stop with the uptime percentages? on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @10:54PM (#49735880)
I'm curious what kind of power distribution you work in. I've lived in suburban, rural, and urban places over the years and I've never experienced five 9's of uptime on the grid.

You work in grid/industrial?

The time to go public was about 16 months ago. People are waking up to large bills now, Chinese models are nipping at their heels, public sentiment has turned, money is becoming more expensive.

The market no longer cares about fundamentals, corporate structure, controls etc.

Too slow by my judgment.

You'll be happy to know that Cloudflare's headquarters is about three blocks away from the very room that this thread is about.
Re:AirPods 5 on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @07:52PM (#49636307)
My experience is the exact opposite. The new shape fits less well in my ear, hopefully they've chosen the best shape for most people, but the shorter stem provides no third point of contact like the old ones!

The longer stem used to have a better chance at contacting your face for some staying power. The shorter stems don't.

Re:AirPods 5 on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @01:57PM (#49630601)
Do they? I don't think so. Makes them look stubby and more like a hearing assistive device (not particularly fashionable).

They looked sleeker and more balanced with the longer stem and in the ear more like jewelry.

Re:AirPods 5 on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @01:47PM (#49630387)
Extend the Stem!!

I have no idea why Apple has made AirPods harder to handle, impaired mic placement, and limited the battery capacity with shorter stems.

The longer stems offered more room for battery, got the mic closer to your mouth, and were so much easier to handle, manipulate etc.

Can't really fathom why they shortened the stem and made it harder for everyone, themselves and users alike.

Re:Is mathematics about to enter the conservatory? on Monday September 07, 2026 @11:29PM (#49605392)
Yup, big group when it's warmish, marching band. Big group when it's cold, symphonic band.
Right, which is why I mentioned that the first step is impeach justices or pack it.
The point is that the state needs to flip enough that Trump would not be in a position to control what the state (the court actually) views as an official act.

If Trump continues to have enough influence in the SCOTUS after he's done being president, then yes, you could imagine they contort any action into an official act. But that'd be a failure of the next government to first establish a less biased SCOTUS (either by packing it or removing existing justices).

Re:Ask HN: Who is using MCP in production? on Friday September 04, 2026 @01:17AM (#49560779)
Not the poster, but working on this right now.

The current framework that solves this the best right now is FiPA.

Establish identity the same way we always have, AS defines the challenges, the client (voice agent in this case) goes and gets them. OAuth from there!
