News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Reminds me of the people who dehydrate to survive the chaotic eras in Three-Body Problem.
And no mention of Sy Hersh's article detailing out the possibility of US involvement [1]. I understand this article is specifically about this new Andromeda boat "lead", but what happened to major "investigative" news outlets... investigating the possibilities?

Agreed but this wouldn't be the Internet if it wasn't critical about something, so that's just how it goes.

not reddit!

What losses are being socialized? This is a liquidity issue that is being reconciled with short term loans, not a solvency issue being bailed out with tax dollars.

Yes but certainly a good chunk of the companies finite resources will be shifted towards this effort vs improving upon search. No judgement whether this is good or bad, just... the way the world is headed.
If N95 masks have worked so well for you, why walk around angry at everyone else for choosing not to wear them? You're in for a long life of anger and resentment.
there's theory, and there's reality. As mostly engineers here we'd love to live in theory, but that's not how the world works.
Re:Zantac’s Maker Kept Quiet About Cancer Risks for 40 Years on Wednesday February 15, 2023 @07:15PM (#34813017)
what's crazy to me is how terrible of a track record big pharma has in being even moderately uncorrupted, and yet when it comes to vaccines, sprinkle in a bit of fear and suddenly we're supposed to trust their studies and superbowl commercials.

i hate being the source person but that's a pretty grand hyperbolic statement lacking details... mind expanding beyond just an opinion?

Ya that could be, I'm in tech so I see it all day, but I tend to be [sometimes] pleasantly surprised at the libertarian ethos that still floats around Hn.. moreso than other platforms that just devolve into flame wars.

Obviously Musk has done some controversial stuff and it's going to piss people off, but do we believe that he has a vision for free speech (not anything goes but free speech as in classic ACLU values free speech) or not? How often does he not say exactly what he thinks?

Re:Twitter starts limiting how many Tweets you can post per Day on Wednesday February 08, 2023 @11:08PM (#34719635)
No it's not straightforward. This isn't a literal physical town square, obviously. This is a platform in which a major type of online discourse takes place that has carved a pretty significant and influential place in history, no matter what happens to it. "escorting people off of it" needs to be taken extremely seriously, with transparency, and with a clear separation from those that set our federal and state policy. This wasn't happening as now proven by the trove of Twitter files.

Well one of the best predictors of the future is the past and he has a pretty incredible track record of both success and vision and staying true to that despite huge market/social/technological headwinds. That was great when he was in energy and space travel, but suddenly not so great.

Vox just using the conspiracy playbook as usual.

Does anybody downvoting want to add a reasoning? I guess most people didn't see how censorial the previous regime of Twitter became over time.
Re:Twitter starts limiting how many Tweets you can post per Day on Wednesday February 08, 2023 @06:28PM (#34717234)
It surprises me that Hacker News is so negative on post-Elon Twitter. His vision has been to create a more healthy town square for dialogue by protecting speech rights. This is probably as hard as colonizing Mars, but shouldn't we get behind that mission? Yes there have been some blunders, and the way he went about it was divisive, but you don't "reach for the stars" by being careful, methodical, and doing things the old way.
But does controlling what everyone says on the Internet help or ultimately hurt? This seems to be the crux of so many problems.
Yep, because fear is the key to control and compliance. It's the oldest trick in the book. There has to be a kernel of truth in order to be effective.
Re:Layoffs Are Cruel and Don't Work on Friday February 03, 2023 @12:33PM (#34644611)
It seems to me that many tech workers are experiencing, for the first time, the hard reality that:

a) Companies may be formed, operated, and controlled by people, but they are complex systems that do not have feelings and do not care about individuals no matter how much the culture warriors say otherwise. They are systems designed to survive, with or without you.

b) We are not defined by our jobs

I'm not making a case one way or another for capitalism, or layoffs, or the meaning of life, rather pointing out that this is the reality in which we live and once you realize these two points, things will make more sense.

tldr;

You’re fired, we’re doing great thanks to cutting your cost, but stay strong in your job search during this recession like those who have been persecuted for the color of their skin!

Re:Natural language is the lazy user interface on Friday January 27, 2023 @01:29PM (#34549772)
related -- i was just looking at serenade.io and thinking to myself that aside from accessibility purposes, what developer wants to learn a new voice abstraction on top of their programming language abstraction.
Re:Tell HN: Confluent laying off 8% of staff on Thursday January 26, 2023 @12:59PM (#34535696)
0) Macroeconomics is macro. Everything is connected.

1) we just came out of a very long period of "easy money" that inflated valuations and gave founders/boards a sense that money would always be there

2) when your customers are laying off / reducing spend, your revenues usually go down

3) the future is very uncertain

Take all of these things together and boards are asking teams to be as prudent as possible which unfortunately means, bringing costs down.

Re:The current layoffs were orchestrated by hedge funds on Tuesday January 24, 2023 @01:07PM (#34507435)
completely different mechanism.
Re:The current layoffs were orchestrated by hedge funds on Tuesday January 24, 2023 @10:25AM (#34504713)
Why not both? Companies are large complex systems that require pruning over time just like any other complex system. Sure you can move a few people around or ask them to spend a little less, but ultimately it would become nearly impossible to respond to market conditions, or even just your own business changes/learnings, without laying people off.

A lot of people here saying there's "no support for this". Let's not forget that the governor was re-elected by a landslide in the latest midterms even after the "don't say gay bill" which was the last thing that "nobody supported". Seems like the people in Florida are saying something different.
