The CEO gives off failed surfer dude vibes but the company is allegedly worth $11 billion? Laughable, and I (almost) feel bad for whoever funded that most recent round.
Re:Ask HN: What are you surprised isn’t being worked on more? on Tuesday December 29, 2020 @04:31PM (#25575300)
Yea, I've also been thinking about this one a bit lately. Really thought it had a shot, but the runway ran out.
Any quality reading you could direct one to on the latter, would be interesting/appreciated!

Generally I avoid Mercola, but I have Dr Fung's book and it's pretty rigorous...so skeptically optimistic

Any simple options for automating periodic captures of voting results?

I'm wondering what folks would suggest as the easiest route to get an automated screen grab / scrapes of some County Registrar websites, capturing the results every 15 minutes or so / as they come in on election day? Why? Well, my dad has been on the hunt for shenanigans and seems convinced that enlisting a few friends to print to PDF some of these results on election night could.... somehow be...

Yea, that sure was nice while it lasted :-|
Re:Beyond Deep Fakes on Wednesday September 19, 2018 @01:32PM (#18025972)
So... most legitimate use of blockchains I have come up with would be authentication of digital video/photography content. I sure hope folks are working on that too
Re:Why don’t college students vote absentee? (Hint: Stamps) on Wednesday September 19, 2018 @01:28PM (#18025919)
I read this as "incompetent democracy" and laughed because it sure feels like that lately

I'll just say that the friends I have who have gone in to teaching...sure work a lot of hours on weekends to be ready for their weeks

Re:Using Deep Learning to Help Pathologists Find Tumors on Sunday June 24, 2018 @11:57PM (#17389797)
Do you think as we continue to get better about detection, that we'll find an increasing array of slow-growing tumors present in much of the body? I.e. ones that may not need a full round of radiation / chemo for perhaps 5 years and perhaps more targeted approaches can be deployed?

Just something i've been wondering about since I've got cancer on both sides of family and have been pondering doing full-body scans (which still seem quick excessive on the risk/reward)

Re:Cash Is About to Lose Its Turf to Cryptocurrencies on Sunday June 24, 2018 @11:51PM (#17389784)
Agreed on all parts, I'd love to know what an ad-free experience would cost on some of these sites...shouldn't be more than 1-3 pennies per article I'd imagine? The paywalls need to change, but until we get microtransactions supported by all the major browsers (not just Brave) in a way that won't be hacked...or socially-engineered too easily (latter is perhaps a tall order), I fear we are stuck

Tangent - Has anyone tried the mandibular extension devices? Worried about long term impacts on jaw...but still tempted vs having this machine for rest of life

YES - the broken booleans! Also, RIP talk. Hangouts is a joke and is what killed me using it
Re:Some Excel users pop F1 off their keyboards (2012) on Tuesday September 26, 2017 @07:36PM (#15343614)
Definitely been there, haven't done it to the laptop yet because for some reason that seemed more tacky than on my full keyboard
Re:Ask HN: Ways to deal with ADHD? on Tuesday July 11, 2017 @06:21PM (#14748591)
Little late, but check out Gabor Mate's "Scattered: How Attention Deficit Disorder Originates and What You Can Do About It"

I'll admit I only read about 1/5 of it and ...wandered off, but now that I'm thinking about it again it's time to put it back at the top of the book pile.

Since I've considered trying many of the same routes you've taken, but have only done Adderall and some anti-depressants at various stages in life.

It works to help realize how messy my place is or to get necessary (deadline-driven) work tasks done, but historically has also led to increased anxiety, tunnel-vision (lack of creativity) and often ends with me stopping for a period due to feeling exceptionally drained feeling after prolonged usage.

I don't like the concept of being on meds for life, but I also would like to keep the job I have until I find one that's more suited to my temperament in this regard...so, tbd on that. Good luck!

Re:Ask HN: How do you take care of your eyes? on Wednesday June 14, 2017 @04:59PM (#14556075)
My eye doc recommended Flax oil - 1 Tablespoon a day. Did that for a while with minimal results, upped it to two and it's starting to work...just have to work up to that slowly otherwise it...impacts your digestion
Yea, it's been interesting to watch that evolve. The Snowden comments on the latest Russian sanctions were ... I guess unsurprising as well
Solid point, haven't seen if they've updated anything on their faq for more transparency. But I doubt it.
Re:More states confirm suspected cyberattacks sourced to DHS on Monday December 19, 2016 @04:23PM (#13215096)
Unrealistic, but fun theory: Maybe DHS was hacked by Russia and then used as attack-vector
Wish you'd wait til voting machine tapering allegations were cleared, but hey, go nuts.
Re:Ask HN: How does a Bitcoin based voting app works? on Sunday December 04, 2016 @01:30PM (#13101061)
Could probably run a side-chain and have secretaries of state host it on their servers with federal oversight and auditing....but you're right about the voter-ID stuff (from a number of angles is a nightmare).
Re:Ask HN: How does a Bitcoin based voting app works? on Sunday December 04, 2016 @01:27PM (#13101042)
Secrecy of the vote is necessary to prevent against such things as vote buying and manipulating others to vote a certain way through intimidation (these days more of a problem outside of US).

The validating that a vote was counted appropriately probably could be used in a block chain type mechanism, but may need to be more with a zcash type of implementation.

I'm a true believer that more tech is not the right answer for voting security. (At least for the near term). Voter-verified paper ballots, that can be run through open-source tabulators and then stored for a subsequent mandatory audit would be ideal (3-5% is the target I think we've gone for in Cali).

Re:Regular meditation may be more beneficial than vacation on Friday November 04, 2016 @03:17PM (#12875152)
I got some theanine from a a bulk sit because it was cheap, but probably has a low portion of L-theanine vs D-theanine... may need to look into fixing that since the effects don't seem to be as good as when I tried Suntheanine...
Re:Regular meditation may be more beneficial than vacation on Friday November 04, 2016 @03:11PM (#12875090)
Thanks for the post and pointer, had not come across any stuff on red muscle etc before!
If you go too far down the rabbit hole, you'll find that's what some folks believe. Been there, got the t-shirt. Ultimately not sure where I stand now.
Re:Housing in the Bay Area on Thursday May 26, 2016 @04:21AM (#11776449)
"is one of only a few cities (and the only city in the West) that had a large urban core designed in the pre-car era, which means that its infrastructure is already designed to accomodate dense urban development moreso than any other American city west of Chicago"

.... Yea, maybe. But muni's average speed is 8 mph. For a city that is 7 miles across that's pretty sad.

(Slightly dated article:http://m.sfweekly.com/sanfrancisco/the-muni-death-spiral/Con... )

Well put. You forgot to add that you'd also like a pony and an unlimited supply of Häagen-Dazs.
