Re:A former Uber engineer's disaster story on Friday December 11, 2020 @03:24AM (#25383590)
Clarification: the engineers on the AMS team played a critical role.

I was the person that actually managed the binary size task force and proved that it was a business problem in the first place. Not all management didn’t care about AMS :)

The Amsterdam team 100% played a critical role in solving the issue (at least until apple bumped the limit). No way we would have stayed under it without you all.

Because Apple would not have approved it.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the clarification.
Re:Announcing Rust 1.16 on Thursday March 16, 2017 @03:28PM (#13888299)
That's not true at all. You can use dynamic libraries; Swift modules produce .framework packages, which are dynamically linked.

A fun challenge is to try to write a quine [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quine_(computing)] in an OISC.

Whoops! You're right.

I think the beard test is for OS developers.
The base price is susceptible to surge, the safe rides fee is not.

Late reply, but still.

Interesting. I'd never heard of this, but it makes sense. Whereabouts did you go to school?
Re:Complete, Persistent Compromise of Netgear Wireless Routers on Wednesday October 23, 2013 @02:19AM (#6597223)
If you have a Netgear WNDR3700v2 or a WNDR3800, check out Cerowrt [1]. The latest stable build, 3.7.5-2, has been exceptionally stable for me, and fast. I would highly recommend it.

Re:Bitcoin breaks $200 on Tuesday October 22, 2013 @01:56PM (#6593645)
How does this prove it is a bubble? If anything, isn't this evidence for the opposite? I expected the price to drop dramatically after the Silk Road shutdown.

Re:Callbacks as our Generation's Goto Statement on Thursday August 15, 2013 @06:47PM (#6221086)
This definitely is a problem in Obj-C. Using GCD and callbacks is usually easier to understand than delegates and manual thread management, but it's still not great. I would love to see something like async/await in Obj-C. There are some great ideas on how to get something similar in this blogpost, but none that I would use in production code unfortunately: http://overooped.com/post/41803252527/methods-of-concurrency
Re:Quine Relay on Tuesday July 16, 2013 @03:21PM (#6054143)
He should add Subleq or some other OISC! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_instruction_set_computer
Why wouldn't the same happen when we talk about other forms of prejudice, e.g., racism?

I have an iPhone 5 with 8GB free space and am experiencing lag and low frame rates quite a bit.

I like Sorcery. https://github.com/NoamB/sorcery It calls itself magical, but it is very easy to wrap your head around and override default behaviors if needed.

The author mentions Quora and Pocket as the only examples of hybrid apps he knows of. What about the LinkedIn app? I always thought that was a good example of a well-done hybrid app.

Neither does a very good job if a good UX is a concern. I haven't encountered any PhoneGap apps that feel native.
Re:How a Mexican Drug Cartel Makes Its Billions on Saturday June 16, 2012 @05:04PM (#4121564)
Hmm. It's tough to say. I see what you mean now. Food is one thing, because it doesn't carry the negative stigma that drug use does here. The US is also extremely friendly towards obesity, from what I see. Obese people do not undergo anywhere near the same amount of humiliation as they would elsewhere. You're completely right though that the food culture in the US is one of absurd excess. I'm just not sure that excess would carry over to drugs.

Re: cigarettes, they're actually smoked much less than in Europe, despite being cheaper and having less graphic warnings. Alcohol is certainly consumed differently as well, but most people grow up and stop binge drinking past a certain age.

I don't really know about the cigarette smuggling you're talking about, so I won't comment on that. If you can point me to an article about it, I'd be interested to read more. I do find it hard to believe that it's had the same effect on communities as drug trafficking in Northern Mexico.

Re:How a Mexican Drug Cartel Makes Its Billions on Saturday June 16, 2012 @03:36PM (#4121398)
The issue is less about whether people like El Chapo will profit on drugs and more about the 50,000 people murdered due to illegal trafficking. People might smuggle cigarettes, but they don't usually murder to do so.

I also think people would be much more willing to tax drugs than food. The reason food is not taxed more heavily is because of industrial heavyweights lobbying congress extensively. There is relatively little money spent in pro-legalization lobbying.

Furthermore, drug legalization in Portugal has made it easier to treat users of particularly dangerous drugs (such as heroin) and has in fact reduced use. Portugal might not have the same drug culture as the US, but it's still a promising result.

Re:Tesla Model S Options and Pricing on Tuesday January 31, 2012 @02:12AM (#3532226)
Looks awesome. Wish I could afford it.

Here's an idea, maybe someone could tell me if it's feasible. One of the annoying things about electric cars is the relatively long charge time, which, for day trips, is solved by charging at home overnight. However, a mistake such as forgetting to plug in one night could have dire results the next day. What about having a charging pad for people with garages? When they get home they park the car where the pad is and it starts charging automatically over the air. What are the disadvantages? Efficiency? Price?
