Re:Microsoft cuts off Windows 10 support early for some PCs on Wednesday July 19, 2017 @10:59AM (#14804752)
got only 19 votes (probably bad timing), let's keep it and not flag it as dupe - info seems relevant to me
Re:MPC-HC v1.7.13 is released and farewell on Monday July 17, 2017 @02:15AM (#14786070)
Very unfortunate, MPC-HC was so simple to use, has a slick UI inspired by MS Media Player and to quickly review/seek videos it was the very best. (much faster than VLC for that task)
Do you mean Dynamics CRM?

Or Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations (formerly Dynamics AX)?

Or one of the other Dynamics GP, Dynamics NAV, Dynamics SL, Dynamics C5?

They are all under this umbrella brand, but quite different software products.

Does it use NLP (NER, etc) to categorize the news into topics?
can you recommend good groups?
> Erlang code is single threaded. Each Erlang "process" is an isolated, share-nothing single sequence of instructions, and you don't use semaphores, locks, or critical sections in writing Erlang code. The BEAM VM is implemented as a multithreaded process, but this is not exposed to the Erlang code

The same is true for PHP.

No wonder Facebook developed HHVM for PHP and also uses Erlang with WhatsApp and other parts.

Interesting site!

"Complex problems don't have simple solutions. It could be a series of sticks: a vacancy tax, an increase in tenants' rights through guaranteed leases and binding arbitration over rent increases (as outlined in the Small Business Survival Act). Or it could be carrots: tax breaks to small businesses to help ease the pain of high rents, or streamlined registration and a reduction of regulatory hoops for certain types of retail tenant. [...]"

And some possible solutions to fix this complex problem

Does it use AI? From the pictures on your frontpage with emoji in message it seems like human assisted rather than AI responses.
Re:Chrome 55 to start highlighting Not Secure websites on Wednesday September 07, 2016 @07:01AM (#12442251)
I am with you. In many use cases HTTP 1 is fine. And as we have seen with the Hearthbleed bug, if you cannot devote resources to keep your HTTPS up-to-date all the time 24x7, it makes your server and the user sessions more insecure. And often providing HTTP and HTTPS makes sense too. So I am against labeling HTTP as "evil" or legacy. We should look who has an interest in doing just that, and why they are forming initiatives. Beside all that pretty much all ad-networks serve HTTP ads, so if you want to loose much of your ad revenue, please go with the HTTPS-only route and face the real world surprise.
Re:How AI and Machine Learning Work at Apple on Thursday August 25, 2016 @04:49AM (#12357673)
Is there a way to op-out of this on iOS and macOS? That's really scary.

ML and AI on OS-level should run decentral on the device itself, and don't leak data at all. The spirit of the 1990s was that way, and we older desktop software works fine that way (even on Pentium 1 hardware), so it would run like a piece of cake on a modern smartphone.

The "differential privacy" technology may sound good, but without an independent audit who knows how good it works.

Re:Bad predictions about the internet on Thursday August 25, 2016 @04:33AM (#12357616)
Another interesting prediction was Bill Gates' "The Road Ahead" (1995) book. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Road_Ahead_(Bill_Gates_boo...

The Microsoft Network (MSN v1, MSN dialup) failed spectacularly and the WWW won, Bill Gates rewrote the whole book in less than a year, the paperback edition already featured the WWW instead of Information Super Highway and MSN/Microsoft Network. Windows 95 shipped with MSN integration, an addon "Plus" CD shipped Internet Explorer 1. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MSN_Dial-up#Early_history

I remember there were almost no visitors from France on my websites, back in 2000. Many were still on Minitel. From Wikipedia: "In 2005, there were 351 million calls for 18.5 million hours of connection, generating €206 million of revenue, of which €145 million were redistributed to 2,000 service providers (these numbers were declining at around 30% per year). There were still six million terminals owned by France Télécom,". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minitel

I read that Germany had something similar called BTX from Bundespost, but that died a few years earlier. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bildschirmtext

An article that mentions the field of view: http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/Microsoft-HoloLens-im...

Machine translated:

Re:This JPEG is also a webpage on Thursday August 11, 2016 @07:42AM (#12267390)
So you are one from the XHTML2 camp then? Good we got HTML5 and good that the weird years of transition to XHTML 1 and unclear vision with XHTML2 and ECMAScript for XML (E4X) are long gone.
You probably own an old microwave, lucky you. Newer models usually have a digital interface with have various buttons - that's probably the non-intuitive interface the OP is referring to.
Not true. MS will support Windows 7 until 2020 and Windows 8.1 until at 2023. (security updates aka "extended support") And Windows 10 has a official 10-year support lifecycle, = 2025. http://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft-commits-to-10-year-su... and https://support.microsoft.com/help/13853/windows-lifecycle-f...
Re:Microsoft to acquire LinkedIn for $26B on Monday June 13, 2016 @10:48AM (#11894272)
$26.2bn / 400mio user = $65 per user

Facebook paid $30 to acquire WhatsApp. (And afaik similar what Murdoch paid for MySpace.)

Re:Show HN: New calendar app idea on Tuesday June 07, 2016 @04:29AM (#11853149)
It reminds me of the WinFS "Journal" demo application.

Peter Molyneux, the designer of Black & White and Fable? Or just the same name?

Re:Vivaldi 1.2 release on Friday June 03, 2016 @07:02AM (#11829552)
It's awesome that they implement an email client. (hopefully open source)

Opera Mail and Thunderbird were good free email clients, but now discontinued.

What options are there (PC)? Outlook, Windows 10 Mail, Windows Live Mail/Outlook Express, Thunderbird, IBM Notes, OSX Mail.

Ideally, I would like an email client that is as powerful as Outlook, has the UI of Google mail (especially the conversation view), has superb IMAP support, runs on my PC and stores all emails on disk. What's disappointing is that many email clients still have no conversation view (or a broken one like Outlook), just a "sent" and "inbox" folder, and this in 2016.

Re:The death of the web design agency on Wednesday May 18, 2016 @04:48AM (#11720587)
Facebook is killing the low-end web design. Instead of hiring an agency for a small website, they just use a FB page. And before Facebook there were MySpace and AOL(albeit with a smaller world wide reach).

@dang: why is this news not on the frontpage? I found out about this news on a local newspaper site - not good :(

So how many people flagged this news? Which company IP address range were involved? Keep an eye on that. Thanks.

Re:“Smartphone” is the wrong name on Monday February 22, 2016 @07:52AM (#11150450)
Nokia's Symbian based phones, various China based look-a-like phones and WinPhone 7 were called "feature phone".

You couldn't do much beyond the basic functionality. And there was a very limited amount of apps available, if any at all. They were as cheap as today's entry level Android smartphones.

Re:Cyanogen New Platform Will Allow Deep Integration of apps on Monday February 22, 2016 @07:44AM (#11150407)
Windows has 1.1% market share on smartphones (4Q15, see third table): http://www.gartner.com/newsroom/id/3215217

Now Microsoft infiltrates Google's Android and tries to "pollute" Java again: http://www.cnet.com/news/documents-goal-to-pollute-java/ . Embrace and Extinguish.

It doesn't help that MSFT names their new thing "CyanogenOS Mod", where as the open source community project is called "CyanogenMod".

Re:“Smartphone” is the wrong name on Monday February 22, 2016 @06:17AM (#11150031)
Bill Gates called it the "Wallet PC", back in 1994. Later Pen-based computing. Later "Pocket PC".
Re:Amazon Free Shipping minimum is now $49 on Monday February 22, 2016 @03:08AM (#11149314)
I hope you and Amazon respect the decision of other customers who would rather not to even think about such stuff. Yet Amazon shows a full screen Prime advertisement & agreement with an small opt-out button on every checkout!
