I've also been recommended to Open Music Theory, as a beginner to theory. Has anyone compared the two? https://viva.pressbooks.pub/openmusictheory/front-matter/int...

Or they just don't want to take on the burden of getting you to improve. PIPs are a pain for everyone involved. If a manger hands out anything lower than "Meets Expectations", their next step is to help you get there, or gather enough data points for HR to safely see you out the door

I went with Shapr3d, originally on the iPad but I believe they have a Mac version now as well. I've found it fairly intuitive for my light complexity projects.

There's a native reader in the Drive app. It's a nice integration actually, allowing for quick management of the file in Drive, keeping it from vanishing forever in my phone's "downloads" folder

I had to do a double take on the author name. I didn't realize Seth had moved but it certainly seems like a great fit.

Austin is also the home of Whole Foods HQ. The HQ store downtown has often been their pilot site.

As a long time Atom user I want to agree with you but I'm not sure these editors really have "won".

At least according to HackerRank's "2018 Developer Skills Report"[1] 67% of developers used VIM with only 4% and 2% using VS or Atom.

Stack Overflow in last year's "Developer Survey Results"[2] does align with your opinion however. Sooo... \_(ツ)_/¯

Re:Google’s Project Fi now caps data bills at $60 on Wednesday January 17, 2018 @04:41PM (#16172192)
I just switched to Project Fi this month. The service has been totally acceptable and the support has been really helpful. Before today's announcement I found myself constantly checking the Project Fi app to see how much data I had used, something I never did on my old provider. This change is much appreciated. I'm especially a fan of them simply rolling this out, no need to opt in. The only way I would know of improved plan options on my old provider was by having a conversation with a sales rep after a support call. I do wish the price per gig was slightly cheaper but I'm comfortable with the increased cost for the improvement of service.

Re:My Journey to a Better Language Learning System on Thursday October 19, 2017 @02:47PM (#15510532)
I've always wanted to be fluent in a second language and have tried in the past, but I always end up with the same problem.

While I recognize that the only way to gain conversational skills is to actually have conversations, they terrify me. Engaging in small talk with strangers in my native language is hard enough. Trying to do it in a second language seems impossible. Even watching the demo video from the link, all I could think was "this is awkward".

I would almost rather there be a sort of script or game around the conversations, so they're not relying on my ability to be interesting while also trying to do it in a different language.

Re:The Google Home Mini Is Google’s $49 Answer to the Echo Dot on Wednesday October 04, 2017 @02:40PM (#15403115)
Does it have a good shopping list? I've had a Home since they were released and used to use the shopping list feature all the time when it was backed by Keep.

At one point they moved it into some web app that I could only access from my phone by spelunking through the Home app. Has that changed?

When it worked, it was great.

> ... and plan and deploy it correctly.

This will likely be one of those things requiring experience but as I'm hoping to install a Ubiquiti focused system in my house over the next few weeks, do you have any suggested resources? Particularly on the subjects of spectrum usage, DFS, and channel selection? I'm not in an apartment but still of the opinion that neighboring network boxes are causing congestion on my local system. We're all on Google Fiber with the provided network boxes, which seem to automatically select the same channel. Simply selecting a different channel hasn't seem to improve the situation (and has potentially made things worse).

Re:Why I Regret Making My House a Smart-House (2013) on Sunday December 11, 2016 @12:05AM (#13149675)
Your raspberry pi note is interesting. My house has an alarm system in place from the previous owner which I've turned off and is not in use. I've been curious to know if there was anyway for me to utilize the fairly complete set of sensors without involving the original alarm company.
What's your reason for running both uBlock & Privacy Badger?
Re:Otto – successor to Vagrant on Monday September 28, 2015 @01:36PM (#10291735)
I'm really looking forward to digging into this project and learning more. From having watched the keynote, I'm a bit worried that the "magic" of the simple appfile is just pushing the complexity one step away from the dev user.
I've got my system built and working using Puppet but plan to move to Ansible when I have a day to mess around with it.

I found "Taste Test"[1] by Matt Jaynes to be a nice and quick (if slightly expensive) comparison between the various configuration managers.

Re:Amazon releases new Kindle products on Thursday September 18, 2014 @12:47AM (#8333738)
I've been waiting for the new Kindle to be released. I lost mine in the seat pocket of a plane last November. I read some rumor article that said Amazon would be releasing a new Kindle Q1 of this year. Obviously that never happened. I track all my read through Goodreads and have for a few years. By this point last year I had 30 books read. So far this year, 13. I cannot wait to finally replace my Kindle.
It's fantastic to see this game finally get recognized. Amir is a great developer and it has been a lot of fun to watch the game progress over the past few months.

He's maintained a developer blog throughout the process. It's a really interesting read: http://amirrajan.net/a-dark-room/

I first learned of A Dark Room when Amir presented it to the local Dallas Ruby group. His presentation on development in RubyMotion is worth a read as well: http://amirrajan.net/12k-lines-of-RM/

Along the same line but heavier weight than 'Interactor' is 'ActiveInteraction'[1].

Responds in much the same way active record does, allowing validations, errors, forms built from interaction objects, etc.

Re:Web development performance inside and outside a VM on Monday July 22, 2013 @08:13PM (#6087364)
In my experience, OSX's implementation of NFS is buggy as well. It's not uncommon for my NFS server to simply give up and stop responding to requests from the vm. Trying out Fusion's share has been on my todo list for a while. I'm a little sad to hear its performance is poor. I've also found that processes like Guard which watch files for changes aren't properly notified. Even with these issues, moving all my development to VMs created by Vagrant has been incredibly useful.
