YouTube / Google should let us provide it with a list of keywords

I like to get suggestions for videos to watch, things to read, music, but (perhaps because my tastes are not that mainstream), it doesn't provide me with much I can use. This goes for ads, too. I like to see ads that are relevant to me - new music, new products, equipment - but it doesn't show me these often enough. So YouTube / Google should let me provide it with keywords - a list of things...

Re:Does Instagram have access to my text messages? on Thursday March 01, 2018 @04:20PM (#16496464)
Where is our phone-body linux OS with SIM hardware already, right?

Does Instagram have access to my text messages?

Today, I got a text from someone and he mentioned he needed to find a printer and was getting quotes for a red decal. When I went on Instagram, I saw an ad from a local screenprinter. Never seen one from them before. Is this coincidence? It stuck me as fairly suspicious.

Re:Facebook spamming users via their 2FA phone numbers on Wednesday February 14, 2018 @06:56PM (#16380759)
Not really. Every user who experiences is going to accrue anger, resentment, distrust for the platform, and they'll treat it accordingly, and when an alternative arises, switch.

IMO Facebook should totally lay off security confirmations, account bans, and all that stuff because it just antagonizes people, unless the user actually does something significantly harmful to other users experience, ie largescale spamming (not just regular sharing), actual fake news propaganda (not just sharing a political story), actually abusing an account (not just using untrue details to protect their own privacy but otherwise using Facebook in an OK way).

Otherwise, yeah, I think everyone's going to jump ship at first opportunity, because they don't get treated that well as users.

Right, while 99% of people online prefer sharing/social networks to post stuff, content creators / businesses only use those to interact, while they host their content self-hosted.

What I'm trying (perhaps with not great success) to describe is something similar to WordPress, but made more for curation / organizing material found online and shared on pages designed yourself. And also easier to use just while doing regular stuff online (reading, finding stuff, watching videos), rather than having to go into the CMS of WordPress and "create a post"

It's a popular idea right now, but not viable for most businesses, I think. It's good for people who want to make themselves a sort of mini star, and people will send them products and then when they're really big also send them money. Seems so mickey mouse.
These are fine for sharing, but you have no ability to organize the stuff you're curating into a website-like presentation. You also can't control how its arranged (default chronological). I think there's a big opening for something like this, that lets people curate stuff they find and arrange the presentation.

Also, if you're using a platform like FB or Twitter or Pinterest, you can't monetize, so basically you'll never invest too much into it, plus it can all be deleted at any time if its on their platforms.

Ask HN: Has anyone built a platform for sharing stuff online (curating)

For several years, since getting into publishing online and working on blogs and a lot of other projects, I haven't found something quite simple yet unavailable.I want to be able to curate and share the good things I find online. For example, I want to collect the cool podcasts I find every half year, organize the news stories I find several of daily in a few categories of interest, share...
