Re:I want to lose every debate on Tuesday January 31, 2023 @11:07AM (#34596929)
Now here is a new problem: The other side wins. The examples are that there are no consequences of the debate, which is great. But in reality, there are consequences (some of them are negative) if you lose the debate, e.g., job interview.
Re:Make a Resume in LaTeX from Scratch on Tuesday January 24, 2023 @11:55AM (#34506282)
I would have to agree with this. But I'd like to point out that recruiters should evaluate whether the job candidate is capable of doing their job rather than what format their CV is in.
I am shocked to see Google's response.

Google does not reflect on what they can do better.

It's just another example of being greedy.

And the web version of Gmail is slow to open with splash screen.
For those who want to get their hands dirty, here is a full, step by step tutorial to set up your own email server: https://www.linuxbabe.com/mail-server/setup-basic-postfix-ma...

migadu's mail number limit does not make sense to me: This risks losing emails.

Because Google forces phone manufacturers to install Google Play store on every device manufactured.

Otherwise, Google threatens manufacturers out of the Android ecosystem, and will not allow them to install Gmail, Google, etc apps.

So, there is no competition at all. Google is a monopoly.

Agree. The big companies like Google are really greedy.

Can they just lower the fees when they make way more than enough money?

No, they don't. They just keep making more and more money, seeing economic inequality becomes more and more a serious problem.

It's just against social good.

Does Google do the same?

From my experience, Google products almost rank top in the search results without Google in the keywords.

Search "News", "Drive", "Calendar", et al.

In Google chrome, all bookmarks are under auto-completed keywords in the address bar.

There is a YouTube channel from New China News Agency. It's the Reuters in China. You can find quite a few videos on the Mars rover.

Don't give hate a chance, guys. Just ask people to use `editor` to edit text files, it will open the default editor on their OS (at least Debian).

Our goal is to ask others to edit some text files, not to ask them to use what tool to edit those files.

Cheers.

Is Hacker News censored? Why doesn't this entry (395 pts) appear on the homepage?
Partially right. I have a DIY machine with Ubuntu. There has been display issues, sound issues, and hibernation issues as well. If you go to Ubuntu's bug report website (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu), there is a huge list of them. It is true for other distros and Windows (internally).
Agree.
Re:Gnome 40 on Wednesday March 24, 2021 @03:22PM (#26571792)
There is little usability in Gnome, just I think it is better.
Very good choice. People simply make decisions without much consequences in 2 scenarios:

1. They have too many users, the users have to accept it. 2. They have too few users, the users are neglectable to care.

Firefox is exactly in the second scenario.

Re:Ask HN: Is a Master's in CS worth it? on Tuesday March 09, 2021 @09:17PM (#26406997)
I'd recommend you take it, but you should definitely take some CS undergraduate classes too to have a solid foundation, either not for credits or required by the CS department.

It will be easier to find jobs in Chemistry industry where CS jobs are available, like data scientist.

If you care less, community college is actually also a good choice.

Hopefully this will pass.

For residential, Comcast only advertises download speed, leaving upload speed like 1996.

Comcast has a bad reputation but there is only 1 ISP available to my address. No competition.

One will appreciate OO once he/she saw a 2000-line code in a single file.

Another important metric is the Time to First Byte (TTFB).

How about 10ms club?

Re:Google X: The Moonshot Factory on Wednesday December 09, 2020 @02:16PM (#25363059)
Interesting to see they are not using the x.google domain
"Only about 5% of our customers use that much."

If only 5% uses 1.2TB each month, why would Comcast want to impose the cap to everyone?

Comcast has already made enough money and this move has nothing but against social good.

I am an international student from China in US. If you ever go to China, you will find how affordable Internet (or Phone Data plans) is. And it is even affordable in sparsely-populated rural areas, unlike the US rural areas I've heard of.

These big private companies are just lagging US behind and the country cannot do anything with it.

Re:RCEP, the world’s biggest trade agreement on Monday November 16, 2020 @12:19AM (#25108327)
There has been many rounds of talks since 2014 when ASEAN countries proposed this. There must be some exposures during the past 6 years. The agreement now needs each country's domestic approval, so you can still have a say in it. The agreement is not in effect yet.
Re:RCEP, the world’s biggest trade agreement on Monday November 16, 2020 @12:01AM (#25108217)
China and Japan alone are a little bit smaller than USA and India. But the whole with other countries is bigger than USA and India.
Re:RCEP, the world’s biggest trade agreement on Sunday November 15, 2020 @11:58PM (#25108196)
Exactly, Japan actually benefits more.

AFAIK, hacker new is moderated and only 1 article about a topic can show up on the front page.

Something an individual doesn't know doesn't mean it's done in secret.
