I worked for a very old school manufacturing company based in Switzerland.
We wanted to roll our own IoT platform for sensors in the factory.
We spoke to MS, what they had was a load of garbage, so we decided to carry on as we were.
I later found out that the MS CEO called the CEO of this company and from then on we were fighting every day as to why we weren’t using MS. This was a private company, not even a big spend, yet they got the CEO involved on sales calls? That’s when I realised how corrupt it was an org.

It doesn’t really work like that in the UK. I doubt you’d get anyone to take it on, let alone for feee. Proving the material impact would be hard. She’s not been named publicly, no lost earnings etc.
I would like to think this sort of thing means we get better regulation, but who am I kidding.

Surely the GDP spend per capita on science and research was far what it has been since.

Re:Ask HN: Are books worth it?
on Saturday January 04, 2020 @06:18PM (#21958345)
I also struggled with books. Despite being an avid WW2 and science fiction fan I avoided lengthy texts and just got my information online.
As has been said many times over that information is often, although not always, low quality.
For me I never connected my dyslexia with my inability to read (obvious I know) then I discovered audio books and my world changed.
I’d recommend also trying audio books. The format is not for everyone, but quality stories, be they fiction or non-fiction expand the mind.
Someone here recommended the Count of monte cristo as an amazing read, and I'm currently half way though, its thrilling! Thank you to that person btw.

This is an amazing Show HN. The best bit was “I did this because I'm lazy” I suspect not somehow.
I did wonder why those chips were so expensive? I have a super limited knowledge of hardware so I was unable to figure it out exactly.
Thanks again and I can’t wait for more write ups.

When I worked at GDS the aim was to use PDF’s they were considered to have a long shelf life, where as HTML and the web in general can evolve and leave some people without a way to read it. I wonder whats changed?

I’d love a link but this argument makes total common sense.
Learning where your boundaries are, and pushing them a bit, is such an important developmental step.
Re:The war against today's dangerously dull playgrounds
on Saturday November 02, 2019 @05:58AM (#21426773)
My mother wrote her master thesis on the correlation between risk in early years children and success later in life (a long time ago now) It turns out if you allow children to take (reasonable) risks, then they go on to be more successful in their careers.
This is now a relatively well known correlation.
I loved doing ‘dangerous’ stuff as a child and this utopian playground makes me sad that most of today’s kids are shielded from it.

This project was doomed from the start, and was yet another vanity project for Boris.
Great Gaurdian article which references the design flaws from the get-go: https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/architecture-design...
As I understand, from a friend at TFL, they could have replaced the whole fleet of buses with electric ones for the same price as this vanity disaster.

I left my laptop (£2,000+ MBP) on a train in the UK (South eastern rail). Some amazing human handed it in, yay!
The rail company charged me £30 to collect it as an admin fee.
Now, when I find things, and this happens relatively often (I've no idea why) I find the individual using social channels like LinkedIn or waiting them to call the phone.

Still £900 is a lot.
