News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

The article is vague, but I suspect this is referring to FMVSS-127 which makes certain active safety features mandatory in 2029 and also increases the difficulty of some required to pass scenarios. The new scenarios require responding from higher initial speeds which effectively requires longer sensor ranges and/or lower latency.
AV’s with enough sensing are generally quite good at stopping quickly. It is usually the behavior prior to the critical encounter that has room for improvement.

The question will be whether 17 mph was a reasonably cautious speed for this specific scenario. Many school zones have 15 mph limits and when there are kids about people may go even slower. At the same time, the general rule in CA for school zone is 25 mph. Clearly the car had some level of caution which is good.

Show HN: SelecTube – Curated YouTube for Kids

https://selectube.app/

This is a side project inspired by HN comments. YouTube has great content (Mark Rober, Smarter Every Day, etc.), but also a lot of junk. YouTube Kids wasn’t any better—my 8-year-old kept getting pulled into endless autoplay loops. I don’t mind screen time, but I want it to be limited and worthwhile. Some parents here mentioned carefully curating every video their kids watch. I thought, “that...

Show HN: SelecTube – Curated YouTube for Kids

https://selectube.app/

Sharing a side project that was inspired by some here on Hacker News. Many parents realize that while YouTube does have some really good content (ie. Mark Rober), it also has a lot of junk. The YouTube Kids app was not better. My 8 year old would get sucked into watching mindless videos by the algorithm + autoplay. I don't mind some screen time, but want it limited and of quality and value.Some...

You can watch without a subscription. But unless you have YouTube premium, they can inject ads into the videos.

I don’t add any ads.

Thanks! Any and all feedback always appreciated. It’s been fun pulling together.

https://selectube.app/ Working on curated YouTube for kids. Trying to make a place where my kids can watch the good stuff without getting sucked into all the mindless junk.

Also it’s been a fun excuse to try out Cursor and other AI tools I don’t normally use in my day job.

I have 1 user - my 8 yr old son.

Yep. Not great data science, although the conclusion is likely true-ish.

Also I suspect big urban vs suburban vs rural differences in current EV buyers given range and charging factors. That happens to also mostly correlate to politics.

Many times, the best solutions are very simple. These often seem obvious in hindsight, but were at the time either non-obvious or dismissed prematurely.
Re:The optimal amount of fraud is non-zero on Saturday September 03, 2022 @11:51AM (#32703026)
Your explanation is so much more succinct than the article!

I believe buried in there is one other factor that is somewhat related:

- reducing friction helps drive more legitimate business. Accordingly, over-aggressive anti-fraud practices can result in reduced sales.

A toy example: a business could eliminate exposure to credit card fraud by not accepting credit cards. That would however reduce overall sales.

I guess this can all fit within a “marginal cost” explanation though.

Totally not equivalent in my view. In traditional interviews, I’m also interviewing the company to see if I want to work with these people.

A take home assignment only shows me that they like unpaid work.

Despite all the caveats / problems on statistical significance and methodology, 1 key takeaway:

“Unemployed” engineers communicate better than those at Uber, Twitter, Amazon, and Google.

:)

Was wondering how much temperature matters, and thinking probably a lot. Do I even know what room temperature white wine tastes like? Not really.
Wow, so many replies that boil down to “because typing is better, you should just type”.

This is fairly insulting as RSI’s are very much a real thing.

Does this community also think that wheelchair ramps should never be invested in because stairs are clearly superior?

I’d rather see the brain power in this community focused on solutions. Keyboard + mouse have lasted so long because they work surprisingly well, but I hope there is a day that we dream up something better that does not require slowly giving ourselves carpel tunnel.

Re:Poll: Why are people leaving their jobs? on Friday January 14, 2022 @01:34PM (#29938232)
+1 anecdotally I think it is often a combination of factors. And once you start looking/ exploring and realize you can get a comp adjustment, then that becomes an easily quantified motivator to pull the trigger.
Super helpful. I didn’t know about individual 401k’s.

Thank you!

We will at some point have vaccinated the true believers and be left convincing the rest of the population to get their shots. From that perspective, taking action to demonstrate that we are being absolutely rigorous on the safety of the vaccines might be the global optimal in terms of minimizing time to herd immunity. Especially if we keep manufacturing the shots while studying the data.

Just a thought with zero data behind it...

Re:Toshiba Unveils First FC-MAMR HDD: 18 TB, Helium Filled on Wednesday February 24, 2021 @01:16PM (#26253441)
I believe helium is used due to it being more effective than air at removing heat. Vacuum is significantly less effective (as in, no convection in a vacuum)
Re:TSMC Kicks Off Volume Production of 7nm Chips on Tuesday April 24, 2018 @09:50PM (#16918131)
Yields will suffer with current DUV process which must be multiple, multiple patterning. The mentioned switch to EUV reduces multiple patterning and should improve yield. But EUV has had its own challenges.
Re:Many Bitcoin Miners Are at Risk of Turning Unprofitable on Wednesday April 18, 2018 @11:30AM (#16868152)
Exactly this.

Bitcoin as it stands is the definition of inefficient. Consuming vast amounts of energy for no purpose. Yes, there are ever-changing explanatiins for Bitcoin's usefulness. But there is no fundamental reason why massive energy consumption is required to store digital value, or to make a transaction across borders.

As it stands, Bitcoin is actively bad for the world. We need more energy efficiency, not get rich schemes combined with electric heating for empty warehouses.

There are likely good uses that will come from crypto tech, but this doesn't seem to be it. (And I'm not knowledgeable enough to guess what they will be)

Re:Solar City's Debt Burdens Tesla on Friday April 06, 2018 @02:39PM (#16776064)
Just for my own understanding. .. if an article is interesting, but title is click bait, is it really considered better to make up my own title vs. use the author's title? I could see arguments both ways.
Re:Why Toys? on Thursday February 08, 2018 @03:47PM (#16335449)
It strikes me that SW is a key reason for any shift toward a toy-first mentality. Most of the arguments in the article make sense when a (SW) product can be rapidly iterated. Physical products likely tend to be harder to start too toyish... well, except for when they are toys.
400 lbs capacity for passengers / cargo is in line with an R22, a common 2 seater helicopter (389 lbs for Pilot, Passenger and Baggage). However the SureFly situation is likely worse than that. Typically the empty weight does not include fuel weight, which might be another 100 lbs.

It seems that SureFly has designed an aircraft with less than half the range of an R22, that can't autorotate, and costs roughly the same. The SureFly might be easier to fly though.

Can any causality be shown? I'd think there is likely a correlation between money spent on the promo video and the amount of resources, name recognition, e-mail lists, etc that a company already has prior to running the campaign.
Re:Google Splits Hangouts into Chat and Meet on Thursday March 09, 2017 @03:30PM (#13833228)
Their newer approach of different products targeted at consumer vs. business use cases has some merrit. All/Duo for consumer, Hangouts Chat/Meet for business. The needs are different and one size fits all often means one size ideal for nobody.

Re:Ask HN: How would you turn Twitter around? on Tuesday February 28, 2017 @12:53PM (#13755770)

+10 to this. The signal to noise on Twitter is terrible.

Pretty sure I'm using it "wrong", but my likelihood of following someone on Twitter is generally inversely proportional to their number of tweets per day.

Re:What I Heard from Trump Supporters on Tuesday February 21, 2017 @02:04PM (#13698483)
After the election, my wife's first reaction was to cry. Her second reaction was "man, this shows we really don't understand a lot of people in our country." I applaud Sam for getting out and trying to improve his understanding.

I think Trump is very dangerous for our country. But that does not mean the people who voted for him are all evil bigots. On the left, we need to work harder to fight the more dangerous policy aspects, while not demonizing half our country. At the women's march post-inauguration, I was a bit taken aback by how hateful and not-conducive-to-fruitful-discussion many of the slogans were.

I don't really agree with the premise that America is no longer great. But anyway, I've had the thought that if we really want to "Make America Great again", a key starting point would be to reduce the hateful polarization.
