Don't call it a comeback. We've been here for years.
Re:5M+ Wordpress sites use “Classic Editor” plugin on Tuesday January 05, 2021 @11:52AM (#25647439)
Noting that the number is active installations, and it is possible to use the Gutenberg block editor in some posts and the Classic Editor in other posts when the plugin is active. So it isn't as simple as 5M+ using Classic over Gutenberg.
Re:Ask HN: How do you manage your bookmarks? on Tuesday January 21, 2020 @12:57PM (#22109431)
I use Larder (larder.io) - it has extensions and you can easily pick a category when you add. Also has good search and RSS feeds for folders. I subscribe to a few of the feeds that I use as a "read later" bucket.

I hope Jack went rogue and nuked it after his most recent hot yoga vision.

That's the kind of shakeup we need in this world.

My team uses Voxer threads as backup during times like this. We also use Voxer when it takes too long to type explanations out on Slack.

Awesome! I dumped Disqus and Google Analytics earlier this year, too. I hadn't thought about Google Fonts, so I'll dump that soon, too.

Since you are using CloudFront, I highly recommend http://s3stat.com for analytics. It grabs CloudFront's (or S3's) server access logs and visualizes them.

For search, I like this method Mat Hayward uses for Jekyll: https://github.com/mathaywarduk/jekyll-search Dump the site contents out into a JSON file with the titles and links accessible, crawl through the JSON file with javascript whenever someone runs a search, then display the results. I know you use Hyde instead of Jekyll, but you can port over the general idea.

Same. Tried in Safari and Chrome. Upon inspection, looks like something is going wrong with the styles. Changing .dropdown-content{position:absolute;} to position:fixed; brought them back for me.
Re:Ask HN: How is your standing desk working for you? on Wednesday July 26, 2017 @02:28PM (#14858811)
I moved to a standing desk seven years ago and love it. Here are a few tips for the transition:

* Start slow. If possible, alternate standing and sitting on a comfortable interval while your legs and back get used to being engaged more.

* Bring your monitor(s) up to eye-level. If you are looking down at a laptop while standing, your neck and upper back will suffer. Search for laptop risers and get an external keyboard and mouse.

* Make a point to sit down for lunch. That short break makes a big difference in standing for the rest of the day.

* To change up my stance, I have a sturdy shelf built in to my desk that I can put a foot up on. Try a stepping stool if your desk doesn’t have one.

* Get an anti-fatigue mat. It will save your feet and knees from unnecessary strain.

I grew up in a small suburb of Cleveland. My parents still live there and they tell me that not a day goes by without seeing another overdose in the paper. They've become so common that they stop running stories, they just add them in the obituaries. People I went to grade school with are among the overdose deaths, too.

I'm not sure Mike DeWine's lawsuit will do anything, or that it is even the best move to reducing overdoses. But damn, it is heartbreaking watching so many people die that way.

I'd also like to add that the one day I did get scans of my own mail in my email inbox, it was mail that I had picked up the day before.
I got automatically enrolled in this last week and have been getting scans of mail for 5 days now. It is a complete disaster. I got my own mail one day, but the other four have been mail for other units in my building.

I sent one support ticket in that went to an unmonitored inbox, then another that got a vague reply saying that there is nothing I can do about it.

What a mess.

Re:Ask HN: Critique for cold email on Friday January 27, 2017 @11:36AM (#13500747)
You are asking for more than 15 minutes of their time due to transitions and responding to emails, yet you have no value proposition. How are you going to make it worth their while? How can you provide real value to their startup?

Make it short and the value prop clear and your responses will go up.

Ask HN: What are some ways to support open source projects besides writing code?

I wish more open source projects had a way to support them besides for working on the code base. I usually don't know the languages they use or don't want to invest the time to learn their framework. I'll gladly give the project $20, though. What are some ways to support open source projects besides writing code?

I've been a huge fan ever since I stumbled upon one of his stories here on HN 5 years ago. "Stories of Your Life and Others" is one of the first Kindle books I bought.

Re:Stop Checking Email So Often (2015) on Thursday January 26, 2017 @05:27PM (#13495867)
I've been mostly fine with my method because every 4 Pomodoro I take a long 30 minute break. Also, not every 5 minute sessions results in messages I need to read and respond to, so those are essentially breaks.
Re:Stop Checking Email So Often (2015) on Thursday January 26, 2017 @04:33PM (#13495426)
My method to stop compulsively checking messages yet still be responsive to my clients' support emails was to institute the Pomodoro Method (25 minutes on a task, 5 minutes off, repeat for the whole work day). I close off all communication (Slack, email, Skype, etc) for the 25 on-task minutes and only check them during the 5 minute breaks. If something urgent comes up, I dedicate my next 25-minute task period to dealing with that item.

This has broken me of my involuntary email/Slack/IM checking and instead keeps me focused on the task at hand.

This looks pretty cool, but the benefits of using this over Spotlight on a Mac are unclear to me from the site. Can you clarify?

If it is essentially Spotlight's functionality, even adding that to Windows and Linux is useful.

I can successfully reach it from the NYC area.
Serious questions: What are the actual dangers of driving while high? If we can somehow normalize the amounts, which is more dangerous to driving: Smoking weed or drinking alcohol?
Re:Why I will never have a girlfriend (1999) on Thursday January 26, 2017 @08:21AM (#13491052)
I don't believe in soulmates or perfect matches. Relationships are about working together, generosity, and graciousness. My wife and I could have made it work with other people, but we chose to make our relationship work, which is what makes it special. And we never forget that we have to keep working on it every day.
