I seem to remember Java Applets & Java "Web start" (or pretty much any browser "plug-in" runtime) causing a fair bit of grief for end-users...

Re:Running Lisp in Production (2015) on Tuesday April 17, 2018 @03:10PM (#16861342)
I don't necessarily disagree with you, but provisioning 16-32gb for a production server doesn't seem to be unusual these days and the cost negligible...

<Insert electron/slack joke here>

Re:Running Lisp in Production (2015) on Tuesday April 17, 2018 @02:45PM (#16861130)
Presumably "the industry" ≠ "lisp programmers"...
I think the technical term for this is "Passing the buck"...
It's interesting that the "Privacy Controls" seem to only change how you see the data they've collected about you, but doesn't seem to change how or when they collect data about you. That doesn't sound like privacy control at all!
Re:OLPC’s $100 laptop was going to change the world on Monday April 16, 2018 @02:21PM (#16851396)
You're conflating two different problems. OLPC was never meant to replace food (or other necessities).

Additionally, having a dictionary, spell checker and encyclopedia at your fingertips make a laptop a great addition to a classroom.

Re:Judge rules Seattle homeless man’s truck is a home on Tuesday March 06, 2018 @12:48PM (#16530481)
I'm not sure I understand your question.

The submission links to an article at fox13memphis.com. The user I'm replying to suggests a "much better" article at seattletimes.com because it includes content which I'm pointing out is already contained at the submission link.

Re:Judge rules Seattle homeless man’s truck is a home on Tuesday March 06, 2018 @12:44PM (#16530446)
That's in the article linked.
Re:The Exeter Book was used as a cutting board on Wednesday February 28, 2018 @06:43PM (#16488358)
According to the wikipedia page, Very similar actually!

The images in the article had me thinking otherwise.

Re:The Impact of Zoning on Housing Affordability (2002) on Tuesday February 27, 2018 @07:52PM (#16479721)
It's definitely a "marketing page" in that it's only purpose is to convince people to support sb-827.
Re:Show HN: A CSS Keylogger on Tuesday February 20, 2018 @08:20PM (#16426005)
I was replying to the comment above which pointed out correctly that the order in which the server receives the requests may differ from the order in which they were sent.
Re:Show HN: A CSS Keylogger on Tuesday February 20, 2018 @03:13PM (#16423756)
My mistake, I guess I didn't really think that through...
Re:JupyterLab is ready for users on Tuesday February 20, 2018 @03:09PM (#16423713)
What does "SKU" mean in this context?
Re:Show HN: A CSS Keylogger on Tuesday February 20, 2018 @02:42PM (#16423459)
It'd be simple enough to add an 'order' identifier (request timestamp, etc) to the requests.

Edit: nm. My mistake, not as easy as that using only css!

Cool! After reading this article I clearly remember buying "Kung-fu shoes" in DTLA/Chinatown as a kid, they were a couple of bucks a piece and probably my favorite shoes at the time.

I also clearly remember they did very little to protect your feet from the black asphalt playground heat in the middle of summer, lol.

I'd expect preventive care is a lot more about ones own routine vs. what the dentist does.
From the wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr_Pepper#Marketing):

In the early 1960s, Dr Pepper promoted the idea of
serving the drink hot with lemon slices in winter.
This idea appeared in the film Blast from the Past
initially set in the early 1960s.
I would have to say Java. Between the tutorials, Language/VM specification & library Javadocs, it's the most thorough I've seen to date...
Why wouldn't you just reference `window.location.href` when needed, instead of wrapping it up in `currentUrl`?

Doesn't sound like a typical bug bounty to me.

Re:Ask HN: What coding challenge sites should I try next? on Friday December 01, 2017 @02:59PM (#15826831)
Maybe just skip the game sites.

Go to github, find a project that you find interesting and relevant to your position.

Take a look at the open bugs and try to fix some. Even if you don't feel comfortable sending a pull request you can learn a lot by going through the whole process on a real project.

Alternatively, take a look at the recent commits and what they fix...

Re:Uber Paid Hackers to Delete Stolen Data on 57M People on Tuesday November 21, 2017 @07:59PM (#15753267)
I think what you'd find is that people would just start using a different service which didn't treat them like children.
