Re:Show HN: Cs16.css – CSS library based on CS 1.6 UI on Saturday January 25, 2025 @11:28AM (#42822579)
Was VGUI built on GTK back then? It looked exactly the same as other GTK apps I was using in the early 00s.
Came here to say the same thing. "Liberty"... I'm using a Pihole to block trackers.
Re:Playstation’s New Partnership with Discord on Monday May 03, 2021 @03:27PM (#27029587)
Interesting on the heels of the (supposed) failed bid from Microsoft. This would dramatically improve Playstation's cross-platform capabilities, as their games are increasingly going cross-play.
Re:A physical breach is a nightmare scenario for Capitol IT on Friday January 08, 2021 @06:15PM (#25691768)
It does seem to have been a plainclothes USCP officer per new reporting. I had read possibly erroneous reports that he was part of Pence's detail.

Difference between the Secret Service and Capitol PD.
Does this apply to mobile app install ads? I just don't see how those products are accessible to consumers in the same way without the awareness driven by highly targeted, experimental ad campaigns. I'm thinking King.com or Supercell type companies.
Re:Introducing nushell on Friday August 23, 2019 @07:39PM (#20783910)
Hugely missed opportunity, I thought it was nutshell for 30 minutes before I noticed the spelling.

Can you imagine the cute squirrel logo? Mouth full of peanuts? Nushell sounds like an new wave band.

Re:Jsonnet – A data templating language on Monday April 15, 2019 @04:33PM (#19668666)
I had that question and also the "just kidding" question when I heard the name. What can you do, naming things is hard.
Re:Jsonnet – A data templating language on Saturday April 13, 2019 @10:08PM (#19657110)
Some devs from my company just recently published https://jkcfg.github.io/, building on lessons learned from many years of configuring Kubernetes. Since we are discussing JS for config management.
Re:Terminal latency (2017) on Wednesday March 20, 2019 @03:49PM (#19446116)
Thanks, I knew I had seen this before but unbelievably there is no date on that article.
Hmm maybe it was deeper. I remember being shocked at the time, but my memory of the scale may be significantly off. It was discussed in the context of "there is barely any water in this aquifer these days."
Yep. I personally know folks with a small ranch outside of Sacramento who had to dig down 90 feet to find water for their well. Hard to imagine that being replenished by a few rainy seasons.
Does this account for the massively depleted aquifers thoughout the state?
That guy is CSW. I am CRW. I swear he uses my email address to sign up for golf clubs.
Re:Dan Ariely Tries to Fix Email (2017) on Friday September 07, 2018 @04:57PM (#17937576)
Thanks very much for the reply, that is very interesting. It is really a very smart feature, and I cannot explain rationally why that is the one thing that pushes me over the line into "this is too creepy."

Do you record what responses people choose? If so is that data used to personalize the responses or just stored in aggregate?

Re:Dan Ariely Tries to Fix Email (2017) on Friday September 07, 2018 @10:34AM (#17934531)
I actually would assume the usage stats would be very good on the feature. I am not sure if you can turn it off on the web, I will look again. Unfortunately it is a bit of a Pandora's box situation; just knowing it is happening is the problem. That said, out of sight, out of mind. As much as I like to think I'm driven by principle, I haven't stopped using Gmail yet.
Re:Dan Ariely Tries to Fix Email (2017) on Friday September 07, 2018 @10:21AM (#17934415)
For what its worth, I am currently looking at ProtonMail again because I find "suggested replies" too creepy. It is actually stressful, at the "increased heart-rate" level, to see those and be constantly reminded I have no privacy at Google. Gmail is the best email client IMHO but suggested replies may finally drive me away.
Re:Extra Technical Obstacles for Facebook Quitters on Thursday April 05, 2018 @07:54PM (#16769852)
I deleted all of my Facebook data about a year ago and I actually had to create a new Spotify account to disconnect it from Facebook. Glad to hear they are improving this process.
Re:Au Revoir on Wednesday March 28, 2018 @12:42PM (#16699298)
What does that mean, "marketing-first approach?" Is this a common distinction in the Hacker News culture?
Re:Au Revoir on Wednesday March 28, 2018 @12:41PM (#16699279)
Agreed. There is this concept of the wheel of energy, people tend to be good at different parts of the wheel:

Starting Growing Containing Completing

Founder types tend to be amazing at Starting, and sometimes at Growing. But at a certain point, you need to bring in the people who are better at the Growing/Containing phase. IMHO most Founder/CEOs don't have this distinction and can't see how what makes them terrific at the beginning hobbles the company as it tries to become a stable business.

Re:Au Revoir on Wednesday March 28, 2018 @12:32PM (#16699184)
Whereas effective leaders are required to manage not only the day-to-day, but turning the core vision into an actual business plan that can pay employees rather than just burn VC money. My experience is the opposite; I've worked at two companies where the founder has returned to be CEO and in both cases they were highly ineffective.
It is crazy Thiel didn't see this years ago and say something then, when there was still a chance something could be done. Plenty of others did. Now, hopefully, it is too late for Facebook to escape regulation and, dare to dream, trust-busting.
Re:Blink has been acquired by Amazon on Friday December 22, 2017 @01:48PM (#15989861)
Amazon is definitely pushing the boundaries of what amount of privacy people are willing to exchange for convenience. I was shocked that so many people I knew bought Echos... wiring your entire house for video doesn't seem that much crazier.
Re:Kids? Just Say No on Thursday October 19, 2017 @11:41AM (#15508846)
This is basically the exact opposite of the Repugnant Conclusion, which states that many poor lives is better than fewer happy lives. This ran on HN within the last year.

My cat's name is Computer. (Adopted, came with the name.) Not great for naming my frontend framework though.
Re:Designing a Bottle on Thursday July 20, 2017 @03:20AM (#14810603)
Fetishization of commodity. The marketing and packaging is designed to tick those "satisfying consumption" boxes in peoples brains.
Re:Behind the Velvet Ropes of Facebook’s Private Groups on Tuesday July 18, 2017 @11:50AM (#14797483)
A very smart direction for Facebook. However, I can't help but feel disappointed that another facet of human discourse will be locked up in Facebook's ever-expanding monopoly of walled gardens. I am reminded of Matrix.org's existential struggle for survival; there need to be alternatives.
