Ask HN: As an average coder, should I try to sell programming ebooks?

A few months ago I started to poke around with Clojure. As this is my first serious dance with a functional language, I've been compiling a lot of notes and code samples as part of the learning process.A thought has wedged its way into my brain; I'd like to take my informal scraps of knowledge, put together an ebook and sell it. Not sure about the length yet, but my hope is that it would be...

I'm a loyal lastpass user, but this is the first that I'm hearing about this. After reading their detailed documentation ( http://helpdesk.lastpass.com/lastpass-credit-monitoring/ ) I think it sounds pretty damn cool.

10 bucks a month is a bit, but the features seem like it might be worth it. The free tier providing alerts for things like address changes, new accounts and etc also seems very helpful--and geared towards the security minded people that Lastpass already attracts.

I agree that credit check sites are notoriously scammy, but this actually seems like a good additional to a good service.

I know a few others doing freelance design work, and they're also pretty good. They are doing very well, but I think the market for freelance programmers is a different story right now.

Also has an excellent plugin, snippet, and configuration system. I just really wish it was open source.
Re:Why I Use Perl: Reliability on Tuesday May 29, 2012 @03:28PM (#4039269)
Good article with some good points. But it did get me thinking, is Perl getting ready to be in a prime position to become the next Cobol? Probability will go up considerably if Perl 6 never comes out to shake up the ecosystem, but even if it does come, what's to say that there won't be Perl 5 applications running into the next century?

Combine its shorthand and with the fact that it's already getting hard to find Perl people, and we could see some dedicated Perl warriors doing very, very well in the coming years.

It may help to use some keyboard shortcuts. I found myself going for the arrow keys to turn pages and the escape button to close stories.
Re:Are there any business books for Hackers? on Friday May 11, 2012 @06:55PM (#3961881)
I recently started to collect some links off HN that had to do with business books that were somewhat more programmer friendly. Sadly, nothing that matches what you speak of (though that would be very cool!)

some books

Re:Ask HN: What music makes you a productive programmer? on Thursday May 03, 2012 @03:54AM (#3922840)
As long as it doesn't have words, I listen to any genre of music that fits my mood. Sometimes white noise does the trick as well.

Somewhat related: I've found audio of rain, wind, chimes, rivers, but never any ambient people noise--i.e. groups walking around on the street and talking in the distance.

I believe he means using your gmail address allows you to use [email protected] and it will appear to be a different email to iTunes.

You could also use hotmail/lives 'disposable' emails to achieve the same ends.

I only saw it once a while ago, but I don't think they were portrayed as 'bad guys' in the film. They even came out in support of how their story was told in the movie.

This blog post is quite old. They do have such an appeal system in place now.

I may very well have enough experience for a steady coding job, as I have had an entry level coding job before. But, there were never a lot of coding jobs in my area, and even less so since the recession came in.
I'm in the early stages of starting mindfulness meditation. Would you recommend one form of meditation over another for dealing with guilt?
> If you're on meds, the drugs that work may not always work, so be mindful that you may need to switch meds.

Much like you did, I researched the hell out of this. And after a lot of reading I determined it would be best to take meds in combination with talk therapy (CBT in my case). Happily, this worked, and I'm no longer on anything other than the occasional Xanax.

That is very true, and I forget about this fact when thinking about all that time that's been, as you say, pissed away.

Thank you very much for your thoughtful reply.

Ask HN: Coming out of a long bout of depression, need some life advice.

I’ve always had an interest in computers, but studied Sociology in university. I finished my degree during the summer of 08--right before the recession hit my area very hard. Then I took up a lot of random writing and entry level programming freelance gigs to make the rent (kind of a digital blue-collar worker).Since then, I’ve been going through a very long period of anxiety and depression...
