Re:New generation artificial heart implanted in patient on Friday July 16, 2021 @01:30AM (#27853285)
mechanical heart valves require patients to be on blood thinners for the rest of their life, bovine and porcine heart valves are most similar to human heart valves in size and shape and they have very good reliability without requiring the patient to continue taking blood thinners.
Good catch, I didn't realize that was Ben.
Someone attempted to recreate the method using shadows to verify the image. https://twitter.com/ai6yrham/status/1382371967618097157?s=21

It's easy to spot prisons on this map.
I personally don't find this any more readable than the real S-1. https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1475115/000119312518...

The real S-1 has a clickable table of contents, is easier to navigate (doesn't require back and forth clicking) and has more data (financials, capitalization, voting structure, etc)

Re:The Apple Watch – Tipping Point Time for Healthcare on Wednesday September 26, 2018 @12:50PM (#18077830)
There are big concerns about both false positives and false negatives. The one lead ECG in the apple watch will very likely only detect afib. one lead ECG's are not diagnostic for heart attacks or any other cardiovascular disease. If you're having a heart attack and your Apple watch says you don't have a-fib, that would be a big concern.
So there's another individual who was involved as well. I wonder if they've been detained as well.
The bitcoin ransom wallets for WannaCry were just emptied today as well. What was the time difference between these two events? It seems possible that Hutchins could have had control of the wallets and fed seized the coins.
Re:A prototype watch, raising hope for Parkinson’s on Sunday May 21, 2017 @01:08PM (#14388106)
That's incredible. The side by side comparison was so stark. I wonder what the physiology behind this is.
I wonder what NASA is thinking about this? The NASA Commercial Crew program which helped fund the development of the Dragon was funded for manned flight to the ISS. I'm curious if they see this as part of the project scope?
Re:Affordable Care on Friday January 13, 2017 @01:00PM (#13392904)
Having health insurance be offered by employers/ tied to employment is one of the biggest mistakes in American healthcare policy. It encourages a "consume as much as possible" mindset for employees and disguises the true cost of care. Creating clarity of price and cost in healthcare would be one of the most beneficial shifts.

Is this a plan for uber to enter the trucking logistics market?
Re:Gag Order on Lavabit’s Levison Lifted on Sunday June 26, 2016 @01:08AM (#11979463)
When the court forced him to turn over the SSL private key for lavabit's servers, Ladar submitted the private key in miniscule font on like 30 printed pages. The gov was not pleased. Mad respect for Mr. Levison. Glad to hear the gag was lifted.
If you want to better understand the CRISPR patent dispute, this article lays out the arguments very clearly. https://www.statnews.com/2016/03/18/crispr-patent-dispute/
Re:25-year-old lived for more than a year without a heart on Wednesday June 08, 2016 @03:12AM (#11860563)
There are two types of LVAD's- continuos flow and pulsed. LVAD's "piggyback" onto the existing heart and provide additional force to the left ventricle (which pumps blood to the body). The biggest issue with LVAD's is immune rejection and plaque buildup. As the body responds to a foreign object it will frequently form plaques on the LVAD's internal valves. It's very challenging to determine if this plaque buildup is occurring without literally opening up the patient's chest via surgery. If the plaque breaks loose, they frequently cause stroke or pulmonary embolisms.
Re:25-year-old lived for more than a year without a heart on Wednesday June 08, 2016 @03:08AM (#11860552)
There isn't any. The vagus nerve helps regulate heart rate, but artificial hearts don't change their pump rate to internal factors.

He will remain as an "advisor" to Alphabet. That's an honorary position if I've ever heard of one.
I think automated discovery software for tax law is still probably very limited in capability.
The last paragraph in the article is a real kicker: they're going to have to parse millions of documents to build their case. That's going to take an enormous amount of time and staffing costs. It'll be interesting to see this play out in the courts or if a settlement is reached before trial.

Re:Coding without Google on Thursday May 26, 2016 @03:29AM (#11776247)
That sounds so incredible. Coding purely for the enjoyment of it. Coding just for the value of the learning. Kind of the most pure way to enjoy something.
