Re:Lego collaboration with Daft Punk on Sunday October 25, 2026 @01:50PM (#50234098)
I don't deny musicians their share of wealth, but most musicians who do get wealthy off their art, do so through a mix of releasing music and touring (mostly the latter these days). I just wish DP had toured a little more to get that sweet dough rather than selling LEGO figures years after disbanding but maybe that's just me being sour for being too young to be able to have seen them live.

And I wouldn't call RAM a cash grab album, their goal was to make an album with great musicians they looked up to, and I think they succeeded. You don't make a cash grab album being famous already and collaborating with industry veterans like Nile Rodgers and Giorgio Moroder.

Re:Lego collaboration with Daft Punk on Sunday October 25, 2026 @10:22AM (#50231906)
RAM Drumless Edition, the Fortnite stunt, now this... It's sad to see Daft Punk™ trying to get every last dime out of that brand name, even after splitting up. They used to reinvest a lot of their early profits into new music, videos, etc., but now it just seems like a sad cash grab. Hope they got some good real estate on the French Riviera out of it at least, it leaves a bad taste on their whole catalogue to me.
Re:QGIS bans AI assisted contributions on Monday October 12, 2026 @12:54PM (#50059208)
calling LLMs "The Future" does not address the concerns they state in that discussion
Re:QGIS bans AI assisted contributions on Monday October 12, 2026 @09:54AM (#50056533)
I never used Photoshop that much, but I used to be well versed with Lightroom. So I tried Lightcraft[1] which is their Lightroom clone, and I was disappointed after all that hype. I couldn't get any of my photos to look nice, using the workflows I was used to from Lightroom. It felt cheap, unfinished, and barely usable, also compared to the open source Lightroom alternatives that have been around for a while (e.g. Rawtherapee). I'm willing to change my mind in the future, but at the moment, I don't really get the hype.

Re:QGIS bans AI assisted contributions on Monday October 12, 2026 @09:31AM (#50056212)
this is an interesting suggestion. it's incredible how little the creators and benefactors of the slop factories have been made accountable for the mess they unleashed onto open source communities.

anthropic at least gives 6 months claude max pro to oss maintainers, but to me that seems like a drop in the ocean compared to the negative impact their product has on these peoples' lives.

Re:QGIS bans AI assisted contributions on Monday October 12, 2026 @08:34AM (#50055519)
for what purpose? qgis is already free to use, unlike Adobe's CS
Re:QGIS bans AI assisted contributions on Monday October 12, 2026 @07:48AM (#50054983)
It's true that simple data conversion is now more easily performed using vibe coded scripts. But the real value of QGIS lies in it enabling managing data large complex projects (infrastructure, urban/environmental planning, etc.).
I remember when I first read about the plans to fill up the Hambach Pit near Cologne, one of Europe's largest open coal mines, until I realized I will be dead by the time it's filled up. I call it the Rhineland's Grand Canyon for a reason, it's huge.
Re:Find the flattest route between any two points in SF on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @01:52AM (#49974717)
Nice visualization. For proper turn by turn directions, Valhalla [1] could help. It has elevation support so this could theoretically be built with it[2], or you just send the shape of your flattest route and it annotates it with guidance.

[1]: https://github.com/valhalla/valhalla

[2]: Currently it only supports 30m resolution for elevation unfortunately

I was sure I couldn't be the only one curious to push LLMs to their limits. Though these days it's much tougher, mostly impossible to get them to react in unforeseen ways to horrendous scenarios.
Re:Anthropic wants your thoughts on AI on Monday October 05, 2026 @10:47AM (#49965599)
I just ordered a couple hundred "stop the slop" stickers to stick onto obviously AI generated posters, ads etc in public, I doubt anthropic is genuinely interested in my opinion
Re:'Neanderthals Among Us' by Peter Sahlins Review on Sunday October 04, 2026 @03:23PM (#49956959)
Obvious rage bait aside, this is exactly what the author of the book presented in the article cautions against:

> The Neanderthal genome, he warns, remains ‘something of a Rorschach test onto which people project ideas and assumptions about ancestry and what it means to be human – or differently human’.

Maybe read an article before commenting on it.

> for example the 2026 discovery that interbreeding was predominantly between Neanderthal males and human females, and not between Neanderthal females and human males.

I thought this was an interesting detail in the article, and trying to find out more about a possible reason for this discrepancy, I found a recent paper concluding that this was possibly due to mate preference [1]. Neanderthal dudes were smoking hot!

Re:StreetComplete on iOS is now in public beta on Thursday October 01, 2026 @01:58PM (#49924944)
Just tag POI, they get stale so quickly. Everybody wants to tag the roads, but the real gap in many places is stale POI, or missing tags like opening hours. You'll get much less attention from these gatekeepers there too
Re:LinkedIn Larpmaxxing on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @04:02PM (#49913549)
LinkedIn is such a shit fest. First they push AI generated posts, now you can mark posts as slop but guess what: you're not flagging that content, you're labeling it.
Re:Ask HN: What're You Reading? on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @12:44AM (#49904441)
Darwin's "The voyage of the Beagle" which is basically his edited travel diary. It's a slow read because he just describes his observations on animals and landscape (he was really into geology) and sometimes the interactions with the people there (lots of tensions between the settlers and the "Indians"), but overall an interesting read.
Re:The UV index is not the warm sensation of sunlight on bare skin on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @12:37AM (#49811707)
I agree that it very much depends on latitude and time of year. In most of Europe, overcast days usually don't present much of a problem for me, but I remember spending a day at the beach in Ecuador under very dense cloud cover and getting one of the worst burns I've ever had
Re:ZuckOff Know when a camera is in the room on Monday September 21, 2026 @03:29PM (#49792162)
I wouldn't see myself as constantly wound up, but I get your angle. I also was at most half serious, alluding to a time not long ago in a country not far away, where this instrument had its moment.

And in retrospect, the French revolution is not considered a dark episode of modern history, on the contrary.

Re:ZuckOff Know when a camera is in the room on Monday September 21, 2026 @07:25AM (#49785818)
I like the idea of this type of merch that normalizes anti big tech sentiment. But I personally would also opt for something more dramatic, possibly involving a guillotine...on the t shirt I mean

Oh, the hypocrisy

Re:Make your first edit to OpenStreetMap on Saturday September 12, 2026 @04:17PM (#49676742)
JOSM aside, I think it's great to target people that read HN with this article. They are likely tech savvy and as much as OSM tries to make it easy for less tech savvy folks to contribute, it's just not really feasible without third party apps like StreetComplete. I recently tried to teach my dad, who was interested but completely overwhelmed, even by the iD editor, and the whole idea of the data model. Which is a shame because he knows so much about the area where he lives.

That's precisely the point, Adam

If anything triathletes are least serious about swimming
Re:Apple Watch Ultra 4 on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @03:07PM (#49632351)
The battery life during workout tracking did at least see a 3x improvement. 14 hours sounds plenty at first until you start riding your bike over long distances! 45 hours should cover most except the craziest ultra athletes, and those are probably sponsored by Garmin anyway

Re:LinkedIn Feed Blocker on Saturday August 08, 2026 @07:58PM (#49227046)
This is great. My LinkedIn feed has been dominated by people regurgitating stuff they read on HN a week before, just in an algorithm friendly click-bait way.
I think they meant the original idea of the European Super League from the 1980s (that preceded the Champions League)
For pid I find pgrep to be the better suited tool
