There is a certain class of images that will be largely unaffected - anything where authenticity matters. Such as a space walk photo from the ISS, a celebration moment in the Olympics, presidential speech, met gala fashion shots etc. and the authentic non generative photos could go up in value as photographers who do not have access to those moments either start to resort to AI or to fall out of the competition.
Re:History of the Nautilus loudspeaker on Wednesday June 02, 2021 @02:42AM (#27365652)
I used to work in boutique audio retail. One of the big challenges of the business is how big and heavy good speakers are. In the old days we would need to crate the speaker to customers’ house for audition as every room has a different acoustic, and try a few different speakers with more crates with a upfront fee/credit to purchase, but it doesn’t happen nearly as often anymore. Showrooms nowadays also mostly do not have the right environment and setup for the speakers to perform well as they were before. In fact most people do not have an opportunity to listen to half decent audio from a heavy passive speaker and the type of sound they could make relative to homepods is becoming more of a myth now. And the direct implication of this is speaker makers need to make more profit per sale and the price increase for Klipsch Heresy and Forte for each revision is bananas. There are still software company making solutions to emulate speaker sounds before a purchase calibrated to common headphone models, I don’t know how they function but every customer who’d tried one of those would walk away for almost certainty as it sounds crappy.

Re:Spaceflight from the Backyard on Sunday September 01, 2019 @03:04PM (#20854072)
Anyone could offer some insights on how expensive it is to really do this in one's backyard and where the backyard is best located? I remember joining a astrophotography group a few years ago, and the equipment setup and scouting process could be quite a burden.

Protomolecules!
Would it be more interesting to the experimenter that the simulation itself is aware of the simulation, and what real incentive there is to terminate the simulation just because the simulated knew they're simulated? What if it's also part of the goal of the simulation.
The article is so confusing. I'm hooked when it started at "The point of the experiment, one imagines, was to prompt the question: “How do they know this?” in the target’s mind." and then it just ends without answering anything.

Has anyone seen a framework for companies to screen emotional skills such as resilience, drive and internal motivations for candidates and have done it well?

It can still take a few hours to put together or days to test performance. Apple's thermal issues could also make development difficult. This is an area we're working on to ensure stability of our modules running across multiple iOS devices.
Wonder if DuckDuckGo could request Google to be removed from the option and I kinda wished Mozilla can work the DDG.

Re:Why the “Self-Made” Success Story Is a Myth on Tuesday February 19, 2019 @12:20PM (#19200706)
It’s not just about the money, there is also the intangible experience when it comes to information and family education. I’d argue that will put an even a stronger influence on a kid’s mindset so if a parent is giving a 15k loan to a child it doesn’t mean the kid isn’t helped significantly to bootstrap her otherwise. On the contrary, it feels even more like a status symbol of demonstration from the parents to illustrate to society how confident they were about the kids paying the loan back.

The problem of open source is attribution, more specifically attribution back to individual contributors and the significance of contributions, and it is especially hard if you want to do attribution based on revenue performance if the licensee is small and do not have an audit department. A large proprietary software licensee can work with a licensor to track revenue performance because the licensee already have the right infrastructure to do so. So here is a startup idea:

An external auditing company with APIs to streamline the process of rev share and attribution back to the open source community and contributors, so that open source projects will make revenue and have the resource to reinvest and improve the projects.

Re:Night Sight for Pixel phones on Thursday October 25, 2018 @06:00PM (#18304957)
The biggest challenge to do this technically is to use gyroscope data to work together with the stacking algorithm. It's hard to tune the gyro to work great for any phone. A pure software solution to analyze the perspectives transformation would be too slow.

Re:Well-Behaved Dogs May Have Happier Owners on Wednesday September 19, 2018 @08:48PM (#18028864)
A friend of mine recently had a dog in the back seat while driving and the dog started to want to get attention from her. My friend turned to look at the dog which ended in rear-ending a car in front of her. Now she needs to spend more than 2k in insurance deductible as well as having to use Uber to commute. Nonetheless, she feels it is 100% her own fault and she's really happy that the dog wasn't injured.
