Re:AWS in 2025: The Stuff You Think You Know That's Now Wrong on Saturday August 23, 2025 @02:09PM (#44997898)
IAM Role change is more recent though
He is such an interesting character to me. I've read a few of his books and some principles he brings up are super interesting and overlooked imo, while majority of the stuff he writes about uses the most handwave-y explanations.
Mind sharing that that affordable 3rd party service is?

Lol, that was my first reaction too. Funny how much language has changed in about 100 years.
Re:Ask HN: Regex on a File or Stream on Wednesday March 06, 2024 @06:09PM (#39622953)
Yes, breaking it up would work, but that is not a solution for streams.

The regex is dead simple: /Authorization: Basic (.*)\ngrant_type=refresh_token/ "." does not match newline, so I'm basically looking two lines that conform to a template.

Specific cases can be transformed with some grep/awk magic, but IMO the concept of pattern matching against a stream is interesting regardless.

For those of us who are only good at derivation: are these problems like chess where a computer will always beat a human?
That's great info. I have an Adder laptop and both my hardware and software experience are poor...
So around 3x of what AWS has? I guess this is more about what motherboard they have, and not an on-prem vs cloud difference.

Can somebody eli5 how this works, or point me to some description? Let's say I'm pip installing it. How does the rust code turn into something that python can call?
As an engineer, saying that $20k, the price of a cheap car, is 1/1000th of a GDP of a whole country does not pass the smell test. Google says that Yemen's GDP is $21.61b, so a drone is 0.0000925% of the GDP. In other words it's about a million drones per year for Yemen, and about 7.7 million interceptors per year for the US.

How does doping make cycling a more interesting sport? I'm a mediocre fan, but Armstrong winning every year was boring. I would think that most fans like to see battles on climbs, attacks, etc... Doping makes you fastre, but whether it takes 45 or 42 minutes to do a certain climbs doesn't matter.

Can you describe in a sentence or two what he has been doing? That 2-hour podcast is quite the commitment.
They're at really high altitudes only a low percentage of time
It was definitely vivid. I can't say that I was convinced it was there because tetris blocks do not appear in nature, so I obv knew it was a hallucination.
The only time I hallucinated was after a single-day double crossing of the Grand Canyon, a 15-hour run/hike iirc. I would see a random tetris game in front of me even though I never played.
IANAL, but having a certain reputation is not enough. If you run a site where the mean time before penis is 30 seconds, you probably have to be upfront about that and promote it as a sex chat place, not "Talk to strangers! The Internet is full of cool people; Omegle lets you meet them. When you use Omegle, we pick someone else at random so you can have a one-on-one chat." (cut&pasted from Omegle).
Exposing yourself without consent is a crime in most places. Omegle was full of that. Watching porn is obviously voluntary.
Re:10 Reasons to Fight Cashless Contagion on Wednesday November 01, 2023 @01:09PM (#38101363)
IMO the crux of the issue is that CC companies can legally forbid you from charging a different amount for CC vs cash transactions.
Re:10 Reasons to Fight Cashless Contagion on Wednesday November 01, 2023 @12:08PM (#38100297)
You're paying the same taxes whether customers pay with cash or CC, aren't you? What am I missing here?

I've been to a few restaurants that are cash only. Is that an option for you?

Re:Improving deep sleep may prevent dementia, study finds on Wednesday November 01, 2023 @10:01AM (#38098293)
I do not have an answer for you, but I have a very low level of trust in the deep sleep numbers, as they are based on heart rate and not brain waves.

Yup

It is an exercise in trolling. The president, Aron D’Souza, is a Peter Thiel buddy, and sounds like somebody who would find bullet points like "Inclusive Language" and "How to come out as enhanced" hilarious in this context.
Re:Better HTTP server routing in Go 1.22 on Monday October 16, 2023 @10:12AM (#37900144)
"The HTTP HEAD method requests the headers that would be returned if the HEAD request's URL was instead requested with the HTTP GET method. ". So it goes against the HTTP spec.
Do you really want to live in a world where you need to hire security if you want to go on a two-week vacation? I fail to see how the squatting that is described in the article is different from theft.
Squatting is a funny thing in many places. In Spain you have 48 hours to make a police report. After that evicting squatters will be a many months long legal process during which you'll need to keep paying all the bills and taxes for your property.
Do you still call is Mt Rosalie, since that was its original name? 20 years from now it'll be an obscure trivia question. Just like most people already call the neighborhood that used to be Stapleton, named after a KKK member, as Central Park. And it was renamed a couple of years ago, and Central Park is a dumb name...
So in your view all genocide is justified because statistically no large group of people is all saints? The idea is not to make past atrocities go away, but to point out if certain participants were more of a good guy or bad guy. Or gal. Naming a mountain/street/whatever after you, or having a statue is a sign that you are considered a good guy. So this decision reverses that.
I'd really like if 14ers.com had a thumbs up/down option for comments. A similar forum, letsrun.com, has an order of magnitude higher number of vile comments like this, but after the recent introduction of voting you see that something like this would has at least 90% thumbs downs and restore your faith in humanity a little bit.
