Re:uBlock Origin filter to block autoplay videos in TechCrunch
on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @10:33AM (#50353287)
Every decent web browser must implement controls to disable download and autoplay of any media, be it video, audio or even gif images. And very neat feature would be to inform user how much bandwidth this media file will consume before clicking play button. And using scrollbar should not be considered as an interaction with website that enables autoplay.
Re:Steam Client Is Now Faster Than Epic's New Vibe Coded Launcher
on Thursday October 15, 2026 @03:57PM (#50109397)
And that's why having some competition is useful for consumers. I would like to see this trend to continue and game launchers improving not only startup times, but RAM usage and disk size usage. I just looked into my `.steam` directory, and it is taking up over 10GB of disk size, and I have only single game installed, that is only about 500MB in size.
Now patiently waiting for GOG answer to this competition.

My "two week" estimate was too sarcastic. Thank you for detailed explanation about all the problems and challenges that comes up when building a file sync client. I really admire your attention to detail while trying to correctly integrate the sync engine in all different file clients.
Re:Show HN: Proton Drive for Linux

If Proton got their devs together for a two week internal hackathon, they could build a very simple Proton client for Linux that would match functionality of Dropbox and quickly gain a lot of new customers. And make existing customers very happy thus creating free publicity to attract even more customers. Alas, their priorities are trying to upsell unnecessary products to their existing customers and not providing products they actually want. And I am saying all this as a paying Proton customer.

Re:Why don't more developers "use the platform"?

Some developers are locked in to using some in house UI solution that is slow to implement any new features from evergreen browsers and even is still shipping hacks for IE11, although it was depreceted company wide years ago.

There is "Prefer WebGPU" toggle (on by default), but it does nothing. How hard would it be to add simple support test to check if browser has all required capabilities to run your application? I think at least allowing to browse models does not require WebGPU, right?
Re:Bug: Border radius has infected VSCode editor

The worst thing is when browsers are adding rounded corners to viewport and covering part of website. This is breaking design and in some cases might even hide crucial information.
Re:A brief history of Windows scroll bar shortcuts
on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @03:49PM (#49821541)
Very worrying trend is thin scrollbars on websites, or in some rare cases - scrollbar just hidden. Fortunately Firefox has a setting in about:config: layout.css.scrollbar-width-thin.disabled=true .

Re:GrapheneOS Overhauled Default Apps and Secure Clipboard
on Monday September 07, 2026 @10:18AM (#49598762)
Default apps in GrapheneOS are really outdated. Especially "Gallery" where on standard "compact" device top navbar is still too small and requires very precise touch. Hopefully, little by little, all stock applications will be updated to more modern variants. I personally had plans to build some open source stock Android applications, but after whole nonsense with platform being locked down I do not see the point in investing my time, just for google to block my apps.

Would be neat if Fairphone would build a real compact smartphone, something with 4" or 5" screen. Current device is too large for human pockets and all those protruding camera bumps and buttons are really uncomfortable.
