Re:Does creatine make you smarter? on Wednesday July 22, 2026 @05:05PM (#49013404)
Yeah, enough people say this that I avoid taking creatine knowing I have the genetic predisposition for male pattern baldness, despite the lack of solid evidence.

Although OP's post says "There is no mechanistic reason to think that would happen." but I don't think that's true. Creatine is known to increase DHT, and higher levels of DHT is linked to hair loss.

Re:Exit IP VPN servers mitigation rollout on Tuesday May 26, 2026 @06:07AM (#48277531)
It's very common for people to switch networks many times a day anyway so it's not obviously a VPN user - even when switching countries to some extent.

Interesting that everybody knows when AWS goes down but Azure needs a "Tell HN" :)

Best of luck to the teams responding to this incident.

Re:Code highlighting with Cursor AI used for $500k theft on Tuesday July 15, 2025 @07:50AM (#44570174)
You've audited the Cursor codebase then? Along with every other tool you use?
Re:Ask HN: I don't want higher salary, I need more freetime on Wednesday November 13, 2024 @07:07AM (#42125335)
Part time work is possible.

I initially dropped to 4 days/week in lieu of a payrise (comp remained the same). Did that for a while and since then I've been working 2-4 days/week (3 right now)

It helped that it was a small company and I had been working there for 5+ years, not sure how I'd go about finding a part time software job otherwise. Everything is negotiable though.

Interestingly everybody replying to this is saying they spend ~8 hours in bed, which most certainly means they aren't getting 8 hours of sleep :)
Maybe look into a Whoop device. Their business model is unique in the space as it's a subscription, but the tracker itself is solid, has no screen and can be worn a number of ways if you don't want it on your wrist.
Psychological safety is what allows people to exchange ideas and be wrong without fear of it being used against them
Re:Visual design rules you can safely follow every time on Tuesday February 07, 2023 @07:23AM (#34691793)
I agree with the off-white/black reducing eye strain but HN is not a good example of readability in any way!
Wanted to add that according to the article, these checks will be required for all content, not just adult content.
I would guess it's more expensive than generating certs - all those ID verification "AI" services use teams of people as a fallback from what I know

This seems to be a very common misconception, but the cookie consent dialogues are not part of GDPR.

Yeah, I'd like to know how it's spotting these fires
We do but it's not fully automated just yet, it'd involve sending us an email.

Similar story with csv imports, it's half supported but not in the UI yet.

We're making about $600/mo right now working on Oku, which we're building as a social book tracker (and more) and hoping to replace Goodreads with.

Here's my profile for example: https://oku.club/user/joe

Yeah, anecdotally it seems more like poor sleep and dehydration than withdrawals after a single night of drinking.

> You've got to have at least some amount of drive beyond "clock in at 9 and leave at 5 sharp to collect a paycheck" to get into these top tech companies.

I can't say how true this is or not, but I know there are plenty that _want_ to get in exactly so they can clock in & out without doing much

Re:What Goodreads could have been on Tuesday April 06, 2021 @04:29PM (#26717000)
I mean it's relatively simple still, mainly book tracking/collecting/reviewing with a slick UI & activity feed. But we have a lot of plans and fostering something more meaningful than clicking a heart button is pretty important to us. Personal (1-1) recommendations could be a good example of that, wouldn't you want to put your friend onto their new favourite book?

Side projects are slow going though so we do what we can, prioritization can be rough!

Re:What Goodreads could have been on Tuesday April 06, 2021 @04:21PM (#26716909)
I do like the approach of personal recommendations over algorithmic. It's just inherently more meaningful if it's from a person you trust or somebody that knows what you're into. We're trying to lean more that way with https://beta.readng.co
Re:A joyless trudge? No, thanks on Saturday April 03, 2021 @10:51AM (#26681494)
I enjoyed the article. I do think the author should take up photography though, if only to give those aimless walks a purpose :)

Younger but presumably in worse health. Don't think it's a straightfoward comparison.

Linear is the real deal. Love the keyboard shortcuts & speed.
Long term there'll be a button for sure! For now, feel free to email us and I'll take care of it (limited time and all that)
Hi, author here!

Would love to have a public API for readng but don't want supporting it slowing us down when we need to change something. It's just the three of us in our spare time at the moment, so we need the agility!

I really, really like that use case too! Right now all you could do would be to create a collection of books on your profile, but would be nice to have on the book page I think.

> Could I send readers to their choice of bookseller?

We would like to refer people to libraries and indies, but these are obviously fragmented so a bit difficult. I think allowing authors to set a preferred book seller probably makes sense.

Whilst people are wishing for a better book logging system, please allow me to politely plug what I'm working on: https://beta.readng.co

We're just getting started, but we're planning on tackling some of the pain points mentioned in the article
