My understanding is that he did both. He was using library access for a while but it wasn't fast enough.

Cats that are raised as kittens and that you've had since they were young basically view you as their mother.

If they are more independent/feral then they don't really bond as strongly and are more wild.

> What? What about the vast majority of links that appear in-line, in text (think Wikipedia). What about the increased bandwidth usage for pre-loaded pages I don't intend to visit? What about the obvious tracking issues?

These already exist. You can do <link> prefetch now ...

But I THINK they are doing preload now as well so the DOM can be pre-cached.

I mean you could do it on your own site but most people try to make sites FASTER not slower.

I still don't grok the main advantages of Portals though.

My expectation is that you could only do this for the same domain.
This make a ton of sense on the surface.

It explains why we're warm blooded (keep warm).

It explains why we have fur (keep warm).

Plus there were a lot of reptiles about during the day and the night would have given us an advantage.

"us" lol.. team mammal FTW!

> Maybe I'm out of touch but 4-5 interviews when they have sought you out and you're a domain expert seems like a big red flag.

I was interviewing with the CTO/CEO etc and some of them were out of town. Normally I would agree btw.

Re:Instagram hides Like counts in leaked design prototype on Friday April 19, 2019 @06:06PM (#19703420)
This is probably done to hurt social media analytics companies. Without these numbers being known the only company that knows them is Facebook which means they can sell them...
I kind of got in a shit storm with Sun Microsystems back in the day about this...

One of their servlets had a query parameter like

/servlet/com.sun.projectname.SuperCrazyServlet?url=some_url_encoded_param

and I found out that it accepted file:// URLs.

They had the daemon running as root and I could read everything on the box.

Anyway. I sent them an email to webmaster and to a few PMs I new but heard nothing back.

About a week later I got a REALLY nasty legal as apparently they thought my email was an attempt to extort them and not just a nice guy trying to point out the problem.

I think they thought I downloaded source code ...

The PMs I emailed had to step in and vouch for me but I think that without their help I would have ended up with a really shitty lawsuit.

> Being beholden to corporations for our operating systems is antithetical to freedom.

This may be an unpopular statement here but where do you think Linux comes from?

Corporations.

It's Open Source but the vast vast vast majority of funding comes from IBM, Google, etc.

The other issue is dealing with module compilation... this part still always screws me over.

Once it's up and running TS is freaking amazing

Re:Ask HN: Founder selling some shares on Saturday December 22, 2018 @03:29PM (#18742296)
Agreed... this is called "partial founder buyout" btw and helps align investors and founders.

Your investors want you to shoot for the stars... it's hard to do that when you're worried about rent, bills, etc.

Additionally, your EMPLOYEES benefit from this too as you're now thinking like investors and want to grow the company.

Re:An Apology and an Update on Saturday December 22, 2018 @03:27PM (#18742289)
This is confusing:

> We do not collect, use, or possess any information about the nationality or ethnicity of our users.

No nationality? Don't they kind of have to collect nationality in order to comply with the law on implementing sanctions?

Re:Why Can’t We Find Planet Nine? on Wednesday December 19, 2018 @04:09PM (#18719655)
this has an easy solution.

1. Build a Dyson sphere around the sun.

2. Capture all the mass in the solar system to build a giant freaking laser.

3. Use the energy to from the Dyson sphere to power the laser.

4. Melt your entire civilization.

TL;DR inverse square rule... it's super dark out there!
Re:Google announces major expansion in New York City on Monday December 17, 2018 @06:21PM (#18703209)
Thank god for NYC... Poor tiny NYC I'm sure could use the tax revenue.

Why can't they pick some place that could actually use the growth? Boulder?

Re:China Telecom's Internet Traffic Misdirection on Monday November 05, 2018 @05:02PM (#18386378)
This is one of the reasons TLS/SSL and crypto is so amazingly important.

Go ahead, monkey around with BGP, since I have the public key of the recipient of my packets I can detect this and block any type of misdirection.

Re:What’s Hiding in Your PDF? on Monday November 05, 2018 @04:02PM (#18385949)
I've been doing a TON of work around PDF lately with my Polar project and wanted get feedback from you guys:

https://getpolarized.io/

I just implemented bulk PDF import this weekend.

It uses pdf.js for the rendering of the PDFs and extracting the metadata (including the fields discussed in this article)..

I have to manage a ton of PDFs for my work / research. Mostly textbooks and compsci whitepapers) and and before working on Polar I was really struggling to manage all the data.
