Re:Vathographs: Photographic depth maps as creative expression on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @05:02AM (#50350057)
Okay, I see where this is going and I guess as an seperated art that uses a photo as start it is okay. In a photographic sense it is not, its not better than any given smartphone hallucinating depth of field when the mono-aperture lense does not has it.

As someone who has a photography walk every few months to years I draw the hard line in the moment its not deterministic anymore, and if I understand this right..its some kind of machine learning modell interferring the depth by looking at it. The data isnt really there, in short, the depth is hallucinated. Same when you use KI fill to touch up your photos...changing exposure, even in zones, boosting colors from raws, all fine..but the moment you non-deterministicly touch a photo it ceases to be a photo and starts to become an AI image that happens to have a photo as starting point.

That all said, on this very topic, is there a camera that actually captures distance in any meaningful resolution? There are fun ToF sensons and 3d voxel clouds of places, but those are usually not something you can snap in milliseconds.

Without having looked to deeply into this..why?

Exists, its from on of the co-devs of textual the framework this uses anyway..and more mature I would wager to say.

This is a fun one isnt it.

Back in the old days (tm) you would post (maybe under a pseudonym) in the internet and dont care that much. Someone could theoretically stalk you through all the sites with moderate effort and depending on how far back we are on the timeline, but still, the Internet felt somewhat private (an illusion) sure, but for a vast amount of people, your post on furry-forum-24 was probably never seeing the light of day outside of that specific space and then it got shuttered 2007. LLMs make that so easy, filing everything away, the web is already thousand times crawled over, but now there are handy tools to search it more easily, with vague concepts, see patterns with a way much bigger working brain so to speak. I myself are quite reluncatant to write anything on the internet these days that is to personal, which is a censorship in itself. I am not sure how it is in actual oppressive censorship states like china or the usa (if you got a left-ish opinion) but the will to not write anything personal is a loss of connection to strangers that was definetly there before. Usually in tiny tidbits that were harmless in itself. But now one can trivially gather all those tiny specs of data so easy..makes it hard to say anything anymore. Same if you are averse of helping the slop machine of getting more art, texts or thoughts.

Re:It's still OK to enjoy programming on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @06:47AM (#50164218)
Not a few engineers are actually doing stuff like planning the cooling for buildings, construct things in CAD or draw plans. There might be some people involved afterwards that actually put those plans into reality and then it becomes a supervisor job similar to what you describe. BUT, thats only part of the job, not the core.

I see it similar to programming, before it was kind of a craft, many crafts are not paid very well, I know that woodworking can be very fulfilling but Ikea exists and noone pays you 1000€ for a simple table. But programming was a well paid craft because people are bad at thinking in general and not everyone can do the thinking good. Now we externalize the thinking and hope it will just work somehow... But the point is..that is a different job. Others already said it, suddenly you are a manager and not a craftsperson anymore. No more tinkering.

About the hobby stuff, I hate that the unannoited ones slop there way into _my_ hobby space, pollute everything with one shots that get abandoned in a few hours and drown everything with their half baked brain childs without polish that all look and feel so same-ish, the "map of something something" projects I have seen that were missing any kind of error validation or check of completness is astonishing.

Just when I came back to my pc and was thinking "I hate this world were everyone talks about AI like fanatics" this made me a little bit happy, especially the unhingend all caps options towards the end
Re:KDE's new Photos app offers a sleek alternative to Gwenview on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @02:50AM (#49606445)
That is interesting for me because Gwenview comes to an grinding halt when cycling through raw files, or rather the ones I got, olympus raw files (.orf), maybe other more mainstream formats dont have that problem. When sorting photos I fell back to XnView MP but that crashes on me if I am to fast so its not optimal either.

Lets see if the new kid can perform here

Re:I'm a seeing-eye dog for a computer on Monday September 07, 2026 @02:11AM (#49594514)
Your point is true to some extend, I personally host my own "cloud" storage..it comes with drawbacks, same is true for email..especially email, social media is a society constructs, by definition its reliant on others but many will argue that its not worth keeping anyway (although I wonder how one stays human in this world then, the meat space seems with so many barrieres in this age).

I feel very much like a luddite..or some artisan of a bygone age. The guy above laments how he never enjoyed coding, this is an interesting sentiment, I know quite a few people who enjoy the craft itself, myself included. The ability to form words that have meaning, that create something from nothing. Sure, the words are just a tool, but its something _I_ can master, not some abstract wish machine that may change its functionality tommorow. Obviously one can argue that the computer itself is in this case the one that creates and not me, its not magic that just works with me, but the machine I got obeys me and me alone..another reason why personal computing is important.

Re:I'm a seeing-eye dog for a computer on Monday September 07, 2026 @01:52AM (#49594367)
You got nothing.

Giant corpos hold every sliver of your so called freedom, you dont innovate, you repeat what others created before you. You use a tool that shackles your thoughts and creativity in a never before seen way, what you perceive is an illusion of liberty that is no present. Without others you are nothing and they can take it away any seconds, you are an addict, not an innovator.

Re:Disenchantment with the Post-AI Internet on Thursday August 27, 2026 @07:14AM (#49462898)
So, I see the point the author makes but something of his style is really offputting, maybe its my weak grasp on a foreign language

> The AI hoax is the new COVID hoax.

Does the guy imply that he does not believe in a pandemic?

His words about wikipedia and enforced thinking strike me as very absolute, as far as I know, depending on language, the wikipedia editors and admins sometimes have peculiar style choices and stright-ish guidelines, buts its a far cry from idological enforcement.

On the other hand, his point about all the LLMs basically having taken a snapshot of 2023-ish Internet think and soldifying it seems somewhat valid. I remember some reports about a hiring AI-based help that prefered non-colored non-woman humans because that is where the history had its bias.

And as the author I feel kinda sad when I see an AGENT.md or CLAUDE.md in a repo..but reality is rarely that black&white.

Re:Nebula Sans on Thursday August 27, 2026 @03:00AM (#49460901)
I was wondering the same..and got no answer. I _could_ ask an LLM but I prefer no to. On the other hand..this is the kind of question that is really hard to google..even if one got 2016 google. The word "book" and "font" in one query will yield stupid results that are not what i asked for.

So I went the way of lowest resistance, and to paraphrase, the LLM said, and it might be entirely wrong that Book is something between Light and Medium, a text weight that is supposed to be better readable for longer texts. So Something around 350/400 weight. Some fonts just use "Regular"

With my new "knowledge" I went about and googled and found this: https://gist.github.com/lukaszgrolik/5849599

So Strangers whos name is just a hex number, the LLM seems to be right. And that is your answer.

Okay, there are watermarks on AI stuff, interesting, not good but everyone else already talked about.

My question..how does it work? Is it robust? I remember that young me hid data in pixels of png with simple stegonagraphy and it was a fun little project..but brittle. How exactly does the fingerprinting survive jpeg compression? Is it repeate over and over the images or is it just one area? If that one is pure black by chance the jpeg algorhitmen would erase it all no?

Re:Stop Making TUIs on Friday August 21, 2026 @03:33AM (#49384959)
I am team TUI for the matter.

Its also a bit funny how the author show cases a bunch of apps that only exist on a very specific setup, IOS Mac devices while TUI can exist everywhere a terminal can reach.

The right tool for the right job, noone would srsly use a TUI photoeditor but for many things the simplicity and constraints that a terminal introduces condenses design.

I got this article about UI density open since weeks and meant to read it https://mattstromawn.com/writing/ui-density/ But from what I could interfere so far..more UI frameworks, more white space, more wasted space.

Also..TUIs usually allow me a wide variety of colorschemes out of the box which is nice

I would say that the current maga goverment of the USA is the result of the culture, not the other way around. There might be _some_ funny business around the elections but overall the people that fall to/want exactly this government are not few
Re:When longing for something becomes hate on Tuesday August 11, 2026 @02:10AM (#49253964)
Bearblog got not comment function and no one would know it exists in the first place. I got a whole slew of very similar posts by now, but this one is the one where its all feelings, less logic. I was curious if anyone would say anything.

About it being to cynical, what do you mean? I am willing to concede that that, as much as I hate it emotionally, those prompt coding things actually achieve results and even good results if wielded properly, about the state of the world I would want good arguments why not everything is lost, I would love them tbh.

for me its that software, wrought by hand is "bespoke". Yes, there is a loooooot of software that is just commercial, quickly vomited by hands that are just in it for the money. On the other hand there are open source projects who might have a miss guided design philosophy (Darktable comes to mind) but are otherwise build from people that care. There was an "artisan" at work, someone who cared.

When I see all those "show HN" projects that are slot level code it feels like they dont care about the result that much and just want to showcase their idea in a more tactile way, but there is no actual proper execution to make the thought into matter so to speak

Blerg, reddit, it would be nice, as a courtesy to at least link to old.reddit

Anyway.

Probably because LLMs are expensive when used in a way that would be enjoeable. Like for good dynamic NPCs

> Because for most stakeholders AI isn't and has never actually been about making something "more engaging" despite whatever marketing they've served you.

Thats the cynic answer and probably true.

> AI for NPCs is difficult to get right and often involves a ton of complex systems that interact with each other. But even if you just focus on decision making: the systems we have are often good enough and don't require an AI. If anything, you don't want NPCs to be uber smart, they are often purposefully dumbed down and made worse so the game becomes enjoyable.

basically that, I remember that F.E.A.R bascially had very well scripted NPCs enemies, those guys were scary on higher difficulties. And then they added voice lines so it doesnt feel as creepy. Imagine they would move in perfect voice silence because they got isolated helmet communication like W40K space marines

Re:TUI for Tabaholics on Thursday August 06, 2026 @05:40AM (#49194538)
I cannot say anything about the thing itself, but its a TUI project in Python and its NOT Textual. This is notable. I really like textual, but i find it fascinating to see other Python-TUI libraries I have never heard of before.

Its probably used here because 4 years ago Textual wasnt a thing.

Re:The title cards in Blade Runner are amazing on Thursday August 06, 2026 @02:30AM (#49193229)
This is interesting for me as the author mentions in the opening line that he basically is a slave to the machine theirself and the only freedom they got is in choosing the font space of their user interface.

And then they go on about the intricate details of some artistic choice 40 years ago. How the human touch and deliberate decisions were made..it all eclipsing in it being about a movie where the machine rebelled.

Why is the website written like a letter? The first grey on grey block of text is barely readable, I dread for those people with worse eye sight than me.

Why always macOS for those markdown editors and bigger question, why do I need AI right IN my text editor. I havent looked further than the headline but why shove llms into everything?

> Granted, Windows 11 is not a perfect OS

that is the fine art of an understatment to nit pick a line in this article. I recently changed jobs and this new one got quite tight managed Win11 devices. Its a work device, if I can work with it its fine. BUT, and thats a big but, Win11 is such a clusterfuck its unbelieavable. Without access to my usual sleught of tools like classic Shell it was very hard to get this system to behave normally..and that is in an environment where most the super annoying things is already managed by the company. My biggest gripe right now is that clicking on the clock/date is NOT opening a calendar like view but instead a useless alert combi menu..and that the audio menu that I know is hidden deep behind many useless sub menus.

Long story short..KDE Plasma which is what i use in private and at the last job is soooo much more polished and what a working person expects than the bullshit win11 presents. But oh well..almost everything is in the browser anyway these days no?

About those numbers, I guess every larger website should be able to report by user agent reasonable well the linux desktop population by subset of their audience..that data must be buyable somewhere no?

Re:Germany's Electricity Rationing Is No Longer Unthinkable on Wednesday August 05, 2026 @03:16AM (#49179585)
You are right, I was to broad. I dont know enough but I would like to argue that till 2000 german economy worked despite the politics for reasons totally disconnected to actually policy..this whole car thing was quite strong
Re:Germany's Electricity Rationing Is No Longer Unthinkable on Wednesday August 05, 2026 @02:41AM (#49179347)
I dont know the source (as in, this website) but what kind of hit piece is this exactly?

> German citizens are paying an enormous price for the ideological-socialist delusion that has embedded itself in all parties beyond the firewall, in their organizations, and in the media.

The firewall in this context is the so called "Brandmauer" which the ruling party, the CDU defined themselves and then violated numerous time while they pave the way for a rightwing, arguable, fascist goverment in the next decade

> Unreliable electricity from intermittent sources and the illusion of renewable energy being available at all times have destroyed any form of serious energy strategy.

oooorrr erratic politics by right ideology and lobbyist that quell any trace of a reliable energy politics, peaked by lobbyist in chief Katharina Reiche

> This is not serious energy policy. It is an ideological experiment conducted on a living society: green, socialist, and destructive to prosperity.

I dont know what this guy smokes but the ruling party for almost the entire duration of past 1949 germany was some flavour of rightwing/conservative CDU goverments that damned the country into a grinding halt for decades and the current outfit is actually trying to reverse any progressive changes the traffic light of before did. The entire country collapses under the monumental incompetence of politicians that only have a vision for their own wallet and this guy accuses the only people in the last 40 years with any kind of vision as "not serious energy policy" WHILE the minister in charge is activly sabotaging said energy politics with conservative bullshit?

is this guy high?

Re:Show HN: Isopolis – Isometric pixel map of SF on Monday August 03, 2026 @04:46PM (#49161188)
I was thinking the same..in fact it made me think enough that I wrote a blog/rant article about the topic AND created then a HN account. Well not this one specifically but all the other projects together I have seen recently and I just happened to have time today https://burnoutdv.bearblog.dev/the-golden-age-of-hobbyiest-p...
Re:Show HN: Isopolis – Isometric pixel map of SF on Monday August 03, 2026 @04:57AM (#49153051)
I am not a fan of this.

Like the new york one, its just...unpolished. I dare to say slop. I am sure the author put some effort into it, BUT its just not there for me. The wiggly lines, the blurry designs and just everything. With something is pixelart or appears to be, I expected it to be pixel perfect, not just some random picture that looks like pixelart on the first glance.

The idea feels neat, but the execution needs so much more touch and polish. Maybe even handcrafting to be impressive.

Re: on Monday August 03, 2026 @04:17AM (#49152741)
The author which is me bangs on how a hobby project realised with AI is not a work of craft. I would be interested how people perceive that radical standpoint.
