Re:Ask HN: How to become smarter? on Sunday September 22, 2013 @04:49PM (#6427952)
Write a schedule and set tangible goals to keep track of progress and measure it. Read 40 pages today, finish course by end of month, write a program this week etc. It's the same as physical training, just keep going.
Re:Why aren't HN comments collapsible? on Sunday September 22, 2013 @04:40PM (#6427920)
> Since scores aren't shown, I'm not sure what comments have value, so I tend to not read anything besides the first few comments.

Maybe you should browse Reddit instead if you're used to reading the top comment (usually one liner) and collapse to the next without engaging in any real discussion.

Re:A beginner's cheat sheet for web development on Friday September 20, 2013 @03:34PM (#6419981)
This is what I started with, but it's incomplete - http://backbonetutorials.com/
Re:A beginner's cheat sheet for web development on Friday September 20, 2013 @12:57PM (#6418947)
The thing I was most interested in was backbone, and it just links to the original site. I mean the colors are nice but this is pretty much useless.
Re:Moot: Full House on Wednesday September 18, 2013 @10:36PM (#6409441)
I congratulate moot for the job. 4chan's change over the years has been minimal. The biggest change was probably the captcha - initially it was a temporary fix to flooding and spam at the time, but it stayed since there doesn't seem to be an alternative. Those that use 4chan enough for the captcha to get annoying, the $20 yearly pass was a great way to get around it and to allow us to support the site as well.

Also the introduction of some of those boards was simply to get shitposts out of other boards (e.g. /soc/ was created to cleanup /b/ and /r9k/). Worked great.

However, I have to disagree with the sage thing. While originally the term was used to not bump a thread (implying that your own post was not worthy of bumping a thread back to the front page), in the last five years (and before that, to some extent) it HAS been used as a way to 'down vote' a thread.

Re:Just go home on Wednesday September 18, 2013 @01:46PM (#6406708)
Yes I'll just quit my job and magically start making money from home. This site is getting shit.
Very risky, he was lucky the air miles program didn't hire a bunch of lawyers and get out of giving him anything.
Re:Smart Things Jeff Bezos Has Said on Tuesday September 17, 2013 @12:59PM (#6400430)
Yes I read the article too.
Re:My Friends and I Bought an Island on Tuesday September 17, 2013 @12:46PM (#6400365)
So everything is about money, not doing something adventurous and exciting. zzzzz.
Re:My Friends and I Bought an Island on Tuesday September 17, 2013 @12:44PM (#6400349)
Why not just answer the question? Why all the secrecy surrounding cost when one could easily find out how much something costs? If somebody asks, it's because they are curious of the value. 10-100k is a huge range that most islands would fit into.
Re:My Friends and I Bought an Island on Monday September 16, 2013 @08:20PM (#6396810)
Why not just disclose the price?
Re:Five years ago, Stack Overflow launched on Monday September 16, 2013 @02:59PM (#6395086)
>the overly zealous moderators have ruined the welcoming community image.

I'm glad someone said it. Before they would at least leave a comment, or ask the user to elaborate or rephrase the question, now they just close. I see so many questions closed INSTANTLY, with no explanation, and most of the time it's not even rightly so.

Of course the vague rule about rules defined by the community allow them to do anything. Once again, moderation has ruined another website.

>that figures out all the spacing for you

What are you even talking about? Yes Word figures out spacing for you too.

Re:Drug addiction: The complex truth on Friday September 13, 2013 @09:12AM (#6380195)
Nicotine is less addictive than heroin only in one measure of addictiveness. There are others, e.g. reinforcement, in terms of which, both heroin and cocaine are more addictive.

And with regards to the article, this is nothing new. Who hasn't caught onto the fact that anti-drug materials exaggerate everything and are full of lies (LSD is bad apparently).

Re:Europe drafts law to ban mobile roaming charges on Friday September 06, 2013 @11:53AM (#6341040)
You can make a similar argument about any market. It's so much easier to believe the intuitive bs that the state can just control everything and keep prices down for everyone.

I'm outta here I just thought the userbase here would be less liberal.

Re:Europe drafts law to ban mobile roaming charges on Friday September 06, 2013 @11:50AM (#6341025)
We pay high roaming fees because of regulation and government intervention.
Re:Europe drafts law to ban mobile roaming charges on Friday September 06, 2013 @11:13AM (#6340827)
The fact that this was downvoted shows people on HN don't understand how the free market works. Adding more and more regulation only makes things worse for the end paying customer. Good luck.
Re:Start Using Emacs – A Thorough Guide for Beginners on Tuesday September 03, 2013 @11:01AM (#6321340)
You can replicate a lot of that behavior in Sublime, plus you get a full GUI, file browser tree and it's easy to use and customize right away.

I'm not really convinced I should invest time in using emacs.

Re:Start Using Emacs – A Thorough Guide for Beginners on Tuesday September 03, 2013 @10:46AM (#6321259)
What benefits does Emacs have over something like Sublime? All I can see is you can customize a million key binds so you don't have to use the mouse. Sorry but I'm not racing type to as fast as possible when I write code, I don't mind spending an extra second and using a cursor.
Re:Polyphasic Sleep on Thursday August 22, 2013 @01:17PM (#6258468)
Speaking from personal experience, but I'm sure many of you can relate, when I wake up from afternoon sleep, I will feel even more tired, disoriented and sometimes with a headache. Perhaps you have to adapt to breaking up sleep, but I've found it difficult.
Re:On the Phenomenon of Bullshit Jobs on Monday August 19, 2013 @10:53AM (#6237528)
Part of the explanation lies in the hiring process. At the company I work we have a ton of useless people - 'office manager', 'coordinator' and other titles that don't mean anything - which make you wonder how they got the job in the first place. Usually answer is they are hired because they know someone at the company, and it's so easy to get somebody who has no skills to fit into paper pushing jobs. Of course there isn't anybody to oversee all this. The chief executives aren't checking if some guy in the building is really needed there. At every step down from CEO somebody is getting hired by someone because they need a job.
>my fellow white people began the search for every possible explanation

contrary to your idea of white people having white guilt or whatever and trying to justify this, the posts in this thread indicate (rightly) that discrimination exists and that you deal with it and get over it.

employers should be allowed to discriminate however they wish. forced equality leads to more inequality. but i love the comments saying she should call the justice department because she didn't get a job because "she was black" when all she did was used two different names.
>"what is the point in having a password if the state can just ask you for it" is like asking "what is the point in having a gun if the state can punish me for killing people with it at will?"

no it's not, bad analogy. in the US the state can't put you in jail for not giving a password (remaining silent).

Re:UK law says provide key to encrypted data or go to jail on Wednesday July 03, 2013 @09:59AM (#5984507)
here's what you could do. put an encrypted volume onto somebody's computer. call the cops, tell them he's got child porn on it. they seize his computer, he doesn't know the password.

what is the even the fucking point in having a password if the state can just ask you for it?

Re:The 5 Minute Guide to Living a Healthy Lifestyle on Tuesday July 02, 2013 @08:34AM (#5977359)
the article is more about getting your shit together than what a healthy lifestyle actually is. if you have another 20 minutes, i would highly recommend this, which covers the basics of exercise and nutrition.

http://liamrosen.com/fitness.html

the problem today is that there is so much misleading information that even if you're motivated you'll still waste your time and effort taking useless supplements and using dumb products when you can see much better results in your health much more easily.

Re:Drugs and the Meaning of Life (2011) on Monday July 01, 2013 @09:55AM (#5970603)
>It is really annoying that drugs proponents ignore the obvious negative effects of drugs.

No they don't. Even if there are negative effects, which by the way are nowhere near as bad as the negative effects of overeating shit and sitting on your fatass ass all day which 90% of the Western generation does on a daily basis, who gives a fuck? They're fun and the benefits (especially the benefits of psychedelics and empathogen) outweigh the risks if you do them safely and in moderation.

Now anti-drug people cannot see this no matter what evidence you present them because they've been indoctrinated by a system that imprisons people for smoking weed.

Re:Basic income as an answer to all out automation on Monday June 24, 2013 @08:00AM (#5932327)
>Now, redistribution is already, prima facie, one of the absolute best things a government can do. Simply put, rich people don't need money, and poor people do. All else being equal, taking some money from rich people and giving it to poor people is therefore the absolute best way to improve worldwide welfare we know of.

This is the most bullshit paragraph I have read all year.
